News today that Newcastle United are expected to make three loan signings next week, in an ongoing attempt to strengthen the squad, after a frustrating summer on Tyneside.
Chris Hughton – expects loan signings next week
Hughton seems to be well aware of who the club needs, and there has been ample reports that he wants to bring in Aston Villa striker Marlon Harewood before the trip to Cardiff City on September 13th, because our other new striker, Peter Lovenkrands is not match fit yet.
And of course the previously red-hot Shola Ameobi has a foot injury.
The Journal is reporting that Manchester United’s young 20 year-old defender Craig Cathcart is another possible arrival this Tuesday, after our bid to sign the top-rated youngster failed last Tuesday.
If he’s as good as the Plymouth fans tell us – he was there last season and played 31 times for them – he could be a great long term acquisition.
But we’ll need to wait and see how he performs of course before that, and not get ahead of ourselves.
Hughton is also looking to add a winger next week, as we’re short now that Duff has gone, although new boy Peter Lovenkrands can also play on either wing.
Wonder if we can get Spurs’ Gareth Bale in, since he can also play at left back?
Hughton said today:
“We’re able to bring in loan players seven days after the window shuts, so we will certainly be looking to take advantage of that.”
“We were looking at players before the window shut, but we have to wait for a week and then we can hopefully get something done before the Cardiff game.”
“We know the squad is short on numbers and we want to bring in players, but they have to be the right players for us.”
“We couldn’t reach an agreement with a couple on Tuesday and so the business couldn’t be done in time.”
That last sentence could be a reference to Harewood and Cathcart, since we tried to get Hareweood in on loan, and Cathcart on a permanent deal – but failed to complete those in time.
Loan deals are fine with us, and there’s almost no limit to how many loan players you can bring in, although no more than 5 are allowed in any side.
Job one this season is promotion, and if loan signings can help us with that – great!
