Nick Butt Back Sunday As Captain?

Our next game is in 6 days time at Cardiff, who are 3rd in the league currently, and real promotion candidates this season.

Nicky Butt – back next Sunday?

And Newcastle will take 2,000 fans to that important game and it may be that Nicky Butt comes back into the team, and as captain.

Butt last was seen in the 4-3 win over Huddersfield Town, but was taken off ast half-time with an ankle injury having just returned from his broken hand being repaired.

Hughton talked about Butt today:

“Nicky comes back into consideration for Cardiff.” “He’s a big player here.” “He’s been unfortunate because he missed a fair chunk of pre-season.”

“And a fair chunk of the Championship.” “That’s unusual for him as he’d not used to being injured.”   “We’ve gone through a period where we have been fortunate but we will go through periods where we are stretched.”

“Nicky though is very much an important part of the plans.” “Nicky is the club captain and he’s been absent.” “Alan Smith has come into the frame and done very well in that position.” “But Nicky is still the club captain here though.”

Translation of Chris’ last couple of sentences above – Nicky will take the captain’s armband when he comes back into the team.

If we can beat an in-form  promotion-chasing team, at their ground – then we’ll do ourselves an awful lot of good next Sunday.

Howay The Lads!!

    Cue usual butt-bashing (oo-er missus)

He’s done alright for us, so get behind him, people. Although to be honest, I’d rather see Smith continue – and I think that’s exactly what Hughton will opt for.

It would be fantastic to get 3 points, but I must admit I’m not confident. If we get a clean sheet I’ll be delighted; if we score and win, utterly bloody ecstatic.

He forgot to add Butt’s other supreme qualities of

    blistering pace
    pin point passing
Well timed tackles on the edge of his own area
    Goals from midfield

    all for a measly 60k a weelk

We are where we are because the team had no skill, pace or creativity – not because of our defensive midfielder. Butt will do a decent job in this division, just like Smith.

Look at it this way: Smith will get booked and suspended several times this season. That’s what Butt is for – he steps in, and probably gets suspended himself by the time Smith is back.

Sad, really. Must admit I wish Butt had gone, even though he’s a decent bloke who’s put in some important shifts for us. Just not good use of the funds, that’s all.

last 2 times i went to Cardiff i had to literally fight my way back to the train station, whilst the police just stood by & watched, just in case the welsh have not grown up yet watch your backs & good luck. they were OK in the pubs before the game so they are not all bad, but they had around 400 yobs.

He won’t be put straight back into the squad. Smith’s performances are there for everyone to see. I am sure Hughton has taken notice and won’t change much for Sunday.

i personally think nicky butt can be a great asset at this level, the likes of lua lua who seem to be the leading young midfielder seem to be quite away off this standard if im judging by the huddersfield game. vukic looks a real talent but is still too young to just throw in. still having said that nicky butt should still be behind smith nolan and guthrie who have all been excellent when playing cm.

just as a point all those saying david healy can perform at this level just look at his record at leeds and come back with the same argument. i was a season ticket holder with leeds for two year whilst had my driving ban and he was one of the worst forwards i have ever seen!! FACT

I suspect Dragonera’s right, he’ll be on the bench. Chris is simply using psychology to prevent small squad complacency by encouraging competition for all places, while reminding ALL players they are a valued part of the set up (esp. after the Xisco debacle).

Butt isn’t my favorite player, but he could be a useful tool in the box this season, particularly against a rampant Cardiff if we go a goal up to help put the shutters up later in the 2nd half.

PS: Please, Nicky, try and stay out of the ref’s book for once, as petulance is a luxury we can’t afford this season…..

Butt will be an excellent player to throw on when we have 45mins or less left on the clock and we need to sure things up. He really is an excellent old school DM, but he just cannot play any more than 45mins or he starts detracting from our performance.

some fans on here seem to be a bit too nervous about the Cardiff game . Just one thing to say lads WE ARE TOP !!! unbeaten and only conceded 1 goal in 5 games , 4 clean sheets on the bounce . Belive me they will not be too confident . Yes they are a good side and will be hard to beat at home , but we are on a real roll
HOWAY THE LADS lets have a bit more confidence lads

Alex its easy to say we shouldnt b nervous and weve conceded only one goal but cardiff for me are the real team to beat for the first few months as they always start a season well. weve conceded the least but theyve scored the most. will be an interestin match, but so far the cardiff supporters i no arent too nervous they think its going to b a draw.

o and to keep on topic, butt has always played well for us putting in the gd shift he comes from the era where defensive midfielders only needed to tackle nothing more. bring butt on the second half against cardiff, if we are winning keep smith on and take off say nolan and lets shut up shop for a bit but if we are losing bring off smithy and let butt finish the match.

Agreed with most ya don’t change a winning team look what souness did after Sir Bob left! If Nicky Butt gets put into the 1st team we’re relegated as soon as his foot touches the ball. That is how bad Nicky Butt is! He single handedly got Birmingham City relegated when on loan there and he gave away a certain free kick against the mackems. If we didn’t have Butt in our team ever we would be Galacticos haha

Haha was being owa the top like 🙂 but if you look at it look how many goals have came off Butt passing to the opposition or giving away penalties or free kicks. I’m amazed how he is captain, give Smith full time captaincy or S Taylor. We have Barton, Nolan, Guthrie and Smith who are miles better than Butt so when he’s getting a game in my mind = never. In hughtons mind “Nicky Butt BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD OOOOH I’LL PICK BUTT OVER…SMTH” Honestly I have a bad feeling now that Butt’s back 🙁
