With the hope we may bring some players in on loan tomorrow, we’ll take a leaf out of Jose Mourinho’s book, when he joined Chelsea, and see if our squad has two good players for every position.
Jose Enrique – has never had a back up pushing him
It seems that’s exactly what the good teams do, amd that’s how they can overcome injuries, when one of their players is injured somebody just as good comes in to replace them.
And with Chris and Colin bringing a lot of common sense back to St. James’ Park, it wouldn’t surprise us if this is exactly how they are looking at the squad.
Here are the first team squad of players we have right now, and how the players fit each position
Steve Harper; Tim Krul
Danny Simpson (on loan from Manchester United until Jan 1); Ryan Taylor; Ben Tozer;
Jose Enrique; Left Back needed
Steven Taylor; Fabricio Coloccini; Tamas Kadar; Darren Lough; Callum Morris; Center back needed
Geremi; Kazenga LuaLua; Winger needed
Jonas Gutierrez; Wesley Ngo Baheng
Nicky Butt; Kevin Nolan; Joey Barton; Danny Guthrie; Alan Smith; Ryan Donaldson; Haris Vuckic
Peter Lovenkrands; Shola Ameobi; Andy Carroll; Nile Ranger; Striker Needed
In bold are the players we think we need, and that’s based on just not having a back -up or that we have youngsters there , but they are unproven because they are young.
Yes we know players like Tamas Kadar can play left back too, but this system is to get 2 players specifically fighting it out for each position.
It looks like we need a left back, center-back, winger and a striker – and if we can good players in on loan for these positions, we may have a decent squad.
And for striker we thought Marlon King or Marlon Harewood would be decent, but maybe David Healy would fit in better with our big strikers Ameobi, Carroll and Ranger.
It’s still a small squad but we also have some promising youngsters not listed, like the following, who can come in from the Youth Team and bolster the squad when they are needed:
Michael McCrudden (Northern Ireland U19), Patrick McLaughlin (Northern Ireland U19), Shane Ferguson (Northern IrelandI), Frank Wiaf Danquah. Brad Inman (Scotland U19) and Samuel Ameobi
17 year-old Ferguson has already played for the full Northern Ireland side, and is a very promising left winger.
Just for the record the first team players who left the club in the summer are:
Xisco – out on loan to Racing Santandar
New players in
Danny Simpson – right back
We didn’t mention Pedter Lovenkrands had left, so we haven’t put him in as a new player. So that’s 10 out and just one in. 🙁
It may not be as bad as we had thought, but that depends largely on which loan signings are made in the next week, , hopefully starting tomorrow.
What are your ideas on this? Let’s have them – comments very welcome.
