Chris Hughton has been interviewed today and confesses he couldn’t have wished for a better start to the season.
Chris and Colin – start could hardly have been better
Hughton talked to the official web-site today:
“I couldn’t have wished for a better start if I’m honest,” “We were heading into the unknown a little bit at the start of the season.”
“But what we knew we had was a committed set of players, where that would take us we weren’t sure.”
“But we’re delighted to be top (of the Championship) and still unbeaten.”
We half expect an announcement today that we’ve signed one or two loan players, and the one we look forward to is that of Manchester United’s 20 year-old defender Craig Cathcart, who played 31 times while on loan at Plymouth last season.
It looks like we tried to sign Craig last week, but he somehow managed to fail a medical, but we have no further details on that.
And Chris will probably be looking to bring in a striker other than Marlon Harewood from Aston Villa, as the player is still injured after picking up an injury in pre-season.
Maybe Sunderland’s David Heaky would be the best bet, however Chris could suprise us with somebody who hasn’t even been mentioned.
Today is the first day clubs can sign players on loan, and it applies only to Football League clubs.

Comment #4Toon_Ice, we can have at most 8 loans in total, 4 being under 23 and the other 4 over 23 years old. At the same time we’re only allowed a maximum of 4 players from any one team and only five can be named in any matchday squad.
One player we could sign today is Gary Doherty to add the experience and physicality we need with Norwich looking to get him off their wagebill so they can get in a few players of their own.

Comment #5Cathcart maybe a player YOU want to see Ed but i personally dont. I’d rather have some experience in the defence. When, not if, we go back up we should have a sneaky bid for Gary Cahill. Knocking on the door of the England squad playing for Bolton!
And i still think were a Winger and Left-back short of sustaining this run through the entire season.

Comment #7Gary Doherty is one of the worst, mistake prone players I have ever seen. Cathcart, Gibson and Sturridge would be good, not journeymen donkeys !!

Comment #10Speaking of needing players, has Collins John signed for anybody? Fulham released him, and in my opinion he would thrive in the fizzy pop league.

Comment #13Cathcart is a pretty decent defender, who has bags of experience at this level. I would go for him if he is willing / able to sign for us. Loan until the end of the season would be nice?

Camara was good, not seen hide nor hair of him for a while, and he seemed a little slow there. Am thinking another Geremi here? Good in his day, but belongs on the ‘Whoops’ shelf in Asda now.

Agree with ya mate as I said last night I would rather have some experience at the back and a striker who can score goals for a club and not just his country. Baird/Volz and King/Striker who can score at this level. Healy can’t score, Cathcart is just as good as the youngin’s we have already we need a bit of stability at the back, not blooding other teams youngsters.
Ed I can’t agree with you on half of your opinions really, don’t say ‘we’ please. I know its a blog and you express your opinion on a blog not ours 🙂 But its best site about for Newcastle so meh!

Comment #18Michael Dawson @ Spurs seems to be a bit-part player in their squad these days. We could do a lot worse than chuck a cheeky bid in for him?

More injury prone than Owen/Viduka etc put together thats why he’s a bit part player! 🙂 he has a game gets injured, someones takes his place back to fitness then get injured after a game. He’s worse than Ledley King for injuries

Comment #25I agree Cathcart looks a very promising player but so do Kadar and Morris and Tozer etc etc so why should we help blood utd youngsters when we could do ourselves a massive favour giving our young players 1st team chances?
Healy is muck , Harewood or King would do a decent job in this divison , esp for 3 months. With a bit of luck we be there or there abouts at the top of table in jan and a even bigger slice of luck we have new owners who hopefully be able to provide funds to get players in good enough if we return to the premiership

Comment #26We need to start thinking Championship, and stop thinking Premiership (for now at least). We need players, with experience, esp at this level to maintain our momentum. We cant go as far as december with 4 or 5 younguns on the field once the injuries kick in. If we can use them 1 or 2 at a time and break them in gently, fine. If we end up playing half a team of sprogs we will start slipping down the table like you wouldnt believe. If we can get players for this level, on loan, that would suit me fine, it would mean we are not lumbered with them on long term deals, so if we do get promoted, we will be an attractive investment to potential new owners and we will not have a squad full of dead wood. Some of the names mentioned above do not exactly set the world on fire, but most of them have a proven track record at this level. Anybody who thinks we can just throw the kids in when the injuries bite needs to follow a different sport, as they clearly know as much about football as Ashley knows about running a football club.

Agree with you – Morris and Tozer show promise and like Kadar should be given a chance in the first team. Bring back Aaron Hughes a committed and experienced player.
