There are some reports today that Newcastle boss Chris Hughton is interested in Stoke City’s defender Leon Cort.
Leon Cort – Newcastle interested?
We were expecting Chris to go after Craig Cathcart of the Red Devils but nothing has happened there, so we’re not exactly sure what the situation is with the 20 year-old Northern Ireland U-21 International, and in particular whether Newcastle’s interest has ended.
Injuries and the summer departure of Sebastien Bassong, Claudio Cacapa and David Edgar have left Newcastle weak in central defense, and Chris would like to bring a player in during the emergency loan transfer window, which ends on November 25th.
Leon Cort, who is 29 years old and stands 6’3″ is the younger brother of former Newcastle striker Carl Cort, who Bobby Robson signed in 2000 for £7M, from Wimbledon, is an experienced player who has 351 first class appearances with 31 goals.
We hope Chris can bring in a central defender soon, because we are just one injury away form having some problems in defense, and we start 7 games in 20 games at Cardiff on Saturday.
Leon joined Stoke in 2007 for £ 1.2M from Crystal Palace, and has played 44 times for the Potters with 8 goals.
In 2007 he was Crystal Palace’s Player of the Season.

Comment #3TF – perhaps you need a beast like him! 🙂
I wouldn’t call 6″3 and skinny very beast like! Now Bramble was a beast!
31 goals in 351 games for a defender is very good though.

Comment #4We can do better. I know it’s a physical league, but no class journeymen aint the way to go.
Should never have let Edgar go – stupid decision.

It seems like nobody over the age of 17 will satisfy you! He would be a good addition.

Comment #17Which injuries have left us short in the middle exactly? None of our centrebacks have been forced to miss games through injuries this season.

Comment #25Faye would have been class had he still been here now.
I can’t actually believe how well the players we’ve let go have turned out. Milner, N’Zogbia, Bramble, Given( although always good, saves city’s ass), Rozenhal kind of.

I agree, plus people need to remember these are just loan players and we don’t need to keep them if they don’t perform.

Comment #33Just my opinion like, but loans are the way forward. Lets face it, as i said earlier, he was good enough for Stoke when they went up and in all honesty would only get in if Taylor/Colo get injured. Yes, its shocking that we’re now looking at players a few years ago wouldnt even have entered our heads but thats the way its is – We’re not in the prem anymore! We need to get premiership squad players in that can cover and most importantly its imperative we go up this season. Any longer out of the top flight than just this one season and i really will start worrying as key players from this season will obviously start to look to get out, one season, we tried so now we’re off sort of thing. Add to that it will be the last season of the parachute payment next season and we will really need to tighten our belts. If we do get back to the prem than we need major investment and a some luck to stay up and prevent us from becoming a yo-yo club. This relegation has put us back to the state of play we were in back in 92-93.
On a positive side, we are top of the league and have been getting results beyond most of our expectations i think. I’d take a draw at Cardiff (I’d like all 3) and that would mean we’ve been away to 2 promotion rivals and got 2 points. If we dont get up this season we will always be in a favourable position next year as we can attract bigger gates than most and therfore generate more cash through the gates and from merchandising which will give us extra muscle, thats why Leeds have been unlucky not to get up but are still challenging.
