New Players Coming In And Butt Fit For Sunday

Newcastle manager Chris Hughton talked this morning of  bolstering the Newcastle squad shortly, and having Nicky Butt back for the game at Cardiff  City on Sunday.

Chris and the lads training this week

Chris has been talking to Newcastle United TV this morning, and he was asked if he expects to sign some new players soon, and the Londoner replied:

“Most definitely,”  “We’re aware that we need to strengthen this squad and we’re very hopeful of doing that.”

“We’ve done very well so far and have avoided serious injury problems, but we definitely need to bring a couple of players in in certain areas.”

There was more news today on the report we published yesterday that Newcastle were interested in signing Stoke City center-back Leon Cort, and the Journal even reports today that they expect that to happen. We’ll wait and see on that one.

And it looks like captain Nicky Butt will feature at Cardiff on Sunday afternoon, as Hughton’s side looks for their 5th league win in a row.

Chris said:

“Nicky missed the Leicester match because of a slight ankle problem,” “But he’s back in full training now and will be fine for Sunday.”

We expect that somehow Chris will find a way to start Barton, Smith, Guthrie, Butt and Nolan On Sunday, and if that happens we should be able to wrestle the midfield away from promising young Cardiff midfield men like Joe Ledley.

That’s been the key to our good start this season, as Newcastle have looked dominant in midfield.

but is not good enough to make a place for him it detracts from compotion, it could spoil the good work done.

    I fully expect us to line up like this on sun;

    Harper

    Simpson Colo taylor Jose

    Guthrie Butt Smith Barton

    Nolan

    Ranger

With the possibility of barton and guthrie on the opposing sides!

This will be a little bit harsh on Ryan Taylor; but for me Barton and guthrie must play. CH will almost definately put Butt back in and smith has been our best player so far.

I will be very surprised if this is not the line up!

Compose yourself ! Butt will not detract, but, will in fact be an improvement to the good work done.
So lets make a place for him, (DM).

Butt should be warm the bench and not mess up what we already have in a settled midfield (as long as Simpson drops to RB from CH and leave RTaylor in Midfield) Barton does not work well out on the wing!!

Contrary to other opionions on the blog, I think Leon Cort is exactly the type of player we should be looking at on loan. Experienced at this level, with a team gaining promotion, plus we will not be lumbered with him should we get promoted. An ideal signing in my opinion. I will no doubt get some stick from this, however, we need players like that him to maintain our momentum, sure, he isn’t world class, and he won’t set the world on fire, but do we really need big earners and big ego’s in the fizzy pop division?

Baldy napper; I would be very surprised if R.Taylor starts ahead of Barton! The team i have written out is the team i’m certain he will play; although its not the one i would pick!

I am with you 100% there. Barton should be dropped to the bench and Taylor should continue out wide. His set pieces have been consistently good so far this season and we have looked a real threat from them. Especially with big Nile up front.

G…I’d be happy to take luon cort on loan! I don’t know alot about him personally; but he is big and powerfull! We need a min of three first team centre half’s.

From what ive been told this morning he was impressive when stoke were promoted so let’s get him on board for three months now as i feel Colo struggled massively against the big young lad against west brom and i’m sure he will do again as the season starts to grind on!

I personally feel Colo will continue to improve as the season gets going. He is used to playing large amounts of games in a row and a i can’t see fatigue creeping in with our experienced Argentinian. I feel confidence is the biggest issue with Colo.

To be honest Dragonera; t think the biggest issue with colo is his ability to handly physical and quick opponents!

He looked good in spain where the game is slow and the ball is played on the floor! That is his major strength i.e. reading the game! He is not so bad at getting his foot in here and there and sometimes times tackles well.

Unfortunatly the premier league is all about power and pace. He was found miserably wanting last season because of that and was outmuscled by a 17yr old against west brom.

He is not good when it comes to balls thrown into the box. that will be my major worry this year. Can he cope with big physical championship players (i.e. Howard at leicester, hulse at derby, henderson at shef utd etc etc)…

This cort lad is very big, very strong by all accounts!

Don’t get me wrong i dont believe colo is as nad as he looks. Its just hi style of play which is not at all suited to the english game m8!

To be fair to Butt, how many of us were completely denouncing players like Smith, Taylor, Colo and Ameobi when we were relegated. For everyone they were at the top of the get-rid-quick transfer list, but look at them now. Are we that fickle that we’ll refuse Butt the same oppurtunity to shine at this level as the rest of the players?
I agree with what Spyro and Kevin have said about upsetting the balance in a well performing midfield, but I predict far bigger and better things from Butt this season. We will see at any rate.

Of all the things said on here, I agree that people have been hard on Butt during this and last season, he certainly isn’t as bad as some paint him to be. I would agree that in this case, the team has had a break, and there is no point in breaking up a winning formula. Keep Butt on the bench and stick with the team from the last game.

all i was saying is but is no longer good enough to force his way into a winning side, he is still heads & shoulders above most in this league, i just feel if you start dropping players it removes the incentives to perform.

@ batty. A decent defender at the toon? Good at set peices and good in the air! Sounds like Phillipe Albert! Seriously tho, I spoke on football365s forum to some stoke fans who rate him very highly indeed. On the eco side of things I think I still have a 8 year old home top with Cort on the back I could recycle… the numbering however, may need some revision!

i have always tried to be positive about players, that pull on the black & white shirt, i never heckle them, and i think but always gives 100%, i just feel we don’t have to bring anyone back just because they were once a excellent player, i just think buts place at the moment is on the bench coming on when we need to protect a lead, and at these points, should be on a par with the younger players. i am not thinking hes crap like others do, but he is in the twilight of his carrier, and hes no superman, hes all to human, but still an asset if used correctly.

    @ Chris G – little brother
@ chuck – Cort is 31 so has no apreciatable value, whereas Cathcart would be a long term investment in terms of appreciation / depreciation. Cathcart may need time to adjust to the level (although his expercience level on previous loans suggests otherwise?) whereas Cort has the required attributes now.

Milburn…. premier won’t have the need to keep his hand in making hoax messages – he got those of to a tee years ago.

What’s more, he’ll not have the time to do it now that he’s got access to the nick’s internet?

Becasue if we loan cathcart United would expect him to play so he could develop as a player himself getting first team expericance etc etc but we have good young centre halves ourselves such a kadar morris etc etc, so why bring him in on loan to help utd in the long run? While if we sign him and give him 1st team football it benefits us long term,

And what be the point in buying cort?Yes he would add to the squad in the championship but not in the premiership if we do get promoted
