Newcastle manager Chris Hughton makes three changes from the side which was beaten at Blackpool on Wednesday.
Alan Smith, Peter Lovenkrands and Geremi are all included in the starting line-up this afternoon.
Smith returns from suspension to captain the side at the expense of Nicky Butt, as expected, and Geremi replaces Ryan Taylor while Peter Lovenkrands comes in for his second full debut as replacement for Danny Guthrie.
The only real surprise is the inclusion of Geremi, but the Cameroon International may well be in the side to create some chances from his crosses and free kicks.
Certainly chances have been in short supply during the last two games.
Loan signing Zurab Khizanishvili is named on a strong substitutes bench which is:
Tim Krul, Danny Guthrie, Nicky Butt, Ryan Taylor, Kazenga LuaLua, Zurab Khizanishvili, Nile Ranger
It’s interesting that Zurab is the only back four player included on the bench, which suggests Newcatsle will be pushing forward this afternoon against the bottom of the league side.
We also believe Newcastle will play a 4-4-2 formation with Carroll up front with Peter Lovenkrands, and it will be interesting to see how this formation works.
We must win today.
Howay The Lads!!

Comment #3Tino I have to agree I am surprised Guthrie is only on the bench, perhaps he has a slight injury.
Geremi will either be an inspired choice or a flop.
At least he will try to pass the ball rather than lump it. Something our lads are doing too much of lately and a dead end tactic if we really want to go up.

Comment #4geremi has been put in as a ploy to make them think they have a chance, good to see butt is bench warming though hope he stays in that position he plays well there.
anyway we will start up our clean sheets again and win by at least 3-0

…………….harper…………….

…barton…smith…geremi…
……….nolan….lovenkrands

possibly swap barton with nolan and to two behind carroll to run into the channels

Comment #8barton is useless on the wing – needs to be played centrally, surely lua lua would be a better choice

Comment #11well atleast CH proved to me he has the balls to drop Butt, but I dont know if it was wise to put Geremi in ahead of R Taylor and have young Guthrie warming the bench. but we’ll see

Comment #14There is a link on iraq goals to watch it.
Barton has looked poor recently and off the pace. I dont think guthrie should have gone having scored a few recently.

Comment #20Hughton’s reluctance to drop Barton is beginning to worry me. Guthrie has clearly been the better player so far.

Comment #24Oh and lads, don’t get your hopes up for a stream of the game – there’s no overseas channels airing it, so unless nufc.co.uk has finally decided to stream untelevised matches to the website for nufctv members (which they bloody well should do), I doubt it’ll be on.
Iraqgoals have made mistakes before, remember!

Comment #27Guthrie has something like two assists and two goals this season. Ryan Taylor has a few assists as well. Both get dropped for the likes of Barton and Geremi? Neither have scored or assisted this season. Where is the logic?

Comment #30there is no tv station in the world who is showing the match so it wont be on justin tv or iraq goals or anywhere else.
bbc radio newcastle are playing it but you cant listen to it on their web site so if you are out of newcastle (like me) then the only way you can listen to it is if someone streams radio newcastle through ustream….but no-one is !
so to summarise we have got no chance.

Comment #38i like the line up an changes. as long as nicky butt doesn’t play any part we should win. guthrie and r taylor need to get rest. its a lot of matches this season, im sure they will come on in the second half, especially guthrie, he is hard to handle when he’s fresh off the bench i think
