Peterborough vs Newcastle – Match Preview

peterborough nufc-crest

Newcastle will field a young side tonight at Peterborough in the 3rd round of the Carling Cup tonight.

Hughton will take the chance to rest some stars and bring in some youngsters, who can get the job done tonight.

Eleven teenagers are included in the squad, (only just true since Baheng turns 20 tomorrow) and they are the following, with their ages in brackets

  1. Bradford-born full-back James Tavernier (18)
  2. Devonshire defender Ben Tozer (19)
  3. Northern Ireland International midfielder Shane Ferguson (17)
  4. Australian-born midfielder  Brad Inman (17)
  5. French striker Wesley Ngo Baheng (19 – 20 tomorrow)
  6. Swedish goalkeeper Ole Soderberg (19)
  7. Local midfielder/striker Ryan Donaldson (18)
  8. Congo Republic born Kazenga LuaLua (18)
  9. London striker Nile Ranger (18)
  10. Hungarian center-back Tamas Kadar (19)
  11. Slovenian atacking midfielder Haris Vuckic (17)

Such is the strength of Newcastle’s youngsters, and we think Krul, Kadar, LuaLua, Nile Ranger, Ryan Donaldson and Haris Vuckic have the best chance of starting tonight.

But Chris will also need some experienced players on the bench in case they are needed.

Gutierrez and Ameobi are out injured and we assume Danny Simpson will not be risked tonight, following his ankle problems last Saturday.

And we are told Andy Carroll will be rested tonight and Zurab Khizanishvili is cup-tied.

Chris has also left Enrique and Coloccini out of the squad.

So gievn all that here’s a shot at the team Chris will start tonight:

Krul
Taylor R. Kadar Taylor S. Tozer
LuaLua Butt(c) Vuckic Baheng
Ranger LovenkrandsS
Subs: Harper Smith Tavenier Nolan Ferguson Guthrie Geremi

This is a weakened and young team, but Chris must blood some of our youngsters, since they may well be needed during the season, with the squad still being so small.

On the Peterborough side of things, it seems full-back Charlie Lee (ankle) is manager Darren Ferguson’s only injury worry, and he could field the same team which beat Reading on Saturday.

Chris Whelpdale, Toumani Diagouraga and Tommy Williams should all start after being substituted for tactical reasons.

Thje goal is to win at the first attempt tonight, preferably with no injuries and no extra time.

Comments welcome.

toon set to bring in Bakary Soumare!!!!!!

Soumare joined French club US Boulogne on August 24, 2009 for a reported fee of €1,500,000 on a four-year deal.[5] However he will be sent on loan to coca cola championship side newcastle united to gain vital experience on a three month loan deal.

i’d probably prefer carroll not to start 2moro and give him that little bit extra rest so as not to aggrevate the injury. ranger and lovenkrands would be my prefrred starting 2.

Hmm, i wasn’t at the game on Sat but i did follow it by various different means. From my opinion of what i’ve been told, Carroll was gash until he had someone up front to help him out. I may be wrong though.

Hopefully it spells it out to Hughton that now we have the players, we should start with 2 up top every game.

Isn’t Kish a big tall powerful defender?..

…But hey!..Why would someone lie on wiki about such a deal?..

I dont know, i know local hero has made a return as the players walk out the tunnell, or at least it did when Shearer came back.

I agree with Laurent, given Carroll’s recent injury problems i think it would be better to start with Mclovin upfront, let him build up some more match fitness.

At the same time i’d rather see Vuckic get his chance to start along with Lualua, Tozer, Kadar etc..the championship is our main priority and we should use this opportunity to be the youngsters in, there is a very good chance we’ll be using them all as the season progresses.

On a sidenote looks like Harewood will be signing over the next few days. Thoughts?

I don’t really rate him too highly but I think he could do a job in this division and we urgently need attacking reinforcements…would have far preferred Camera but that doesnt look at all likely..

Camara seems to have had an attitude problem wherever he has been to be honest. Speaking to a few Villa fans i know, they seem to rate Harewood and think he hasn’t been given a fair crack.

  • 13 punk skunk... // Sep 21, 2009 at 9:00 PM

    toonsy,
aye, kamara does seem to have an attitude problem…& Harewood defo doesn’t, how do i klnow this, well one of my best mates went to school with him & they reckon he’s a top lad & if they say that’s the case, it’s the case!..
…He’ll defo give 101% for the cause, no doubt!..
    …& he’s younger!..

  • 14 AndyNUFC // Sep 21, 2009 at 9:11 PM

Do we need Harewood? I’m not so sure.

I think top priority is a winger or cover left back.

  • 15 AndyNUFC // Sep 21, 2009 at 9:11 PM

To be honest i’d even get Viduka back on a pay as you play deal.

  • 16 buda boom // Sep 21, 2009 at 9:13 PM

carroll should be rested and saved for the weekend. Ranger should start and Ngo baheng and donaldon given starts.
Interesting the journal today picked up on how Lovenkrands was upsetting the players and coaching staff with his inept display.
Also how bad was barton on saturday. His passing was abysmal. I would like to see Lua Lua in centre midfield he looked to have great potential against Huddersfield. he won’t get many starts under Hughton though as there are favourites in front of him

  • 17 AndyNUFC // Sep 21, 2009 at 9:15 PM

To be fair buda I would not START Lua Lua in front of Barton, i’d maybe put him on with half an hour to go if Barton’s having (another) stinker.

To be honest though i’d probably even put in Vuckic in front of him. Attack minded midfielder with height to boot.
