Harewood Signs For Newcastle – Great Opportunity For Striker

September 24th, 2009 by Ed Harrison · 18 Comments

Newcastle United have finally (at last!) completed the loan signing of Aston Villa striker Marlon Harewood.

Marlon Harewood - finally signs loan deal at Newcastle

30 year-old Harewood will go straight into the squad for Newcastle’s vital  game at Ipswich on Saturday, and we would expect at some point in the game he will make his debut and get a run-out.

Harewood has been signed by the Magpies as a temporary replacement for injured local striker Shola Ameobi, who will still not return for a couple of months.

It’s also a great chance for Marlon himself,  because he has shown in the past he can score the goals in the Championship, and that’s what he and the Newcastle fans hope he can do in the coming games.

Villa signed Harewood from West Ham United for £4M in July 2007, but he has been unable to get into the first team much because of the great competition for places at Villa Park.

It must have been a big relief for Chris Hughton to get Marlon, and he talked about the loan signing today:

“It’s been agreed. What we’ve been desperate to do is bring in a different type of striker to what we have here in Andy Carroll, Shola Ameobi and Nile Ranger.”

“He’ll give us experience, power and pace, and it’s an exciting challenge for him also.”

“He certainly boosts the squad, and Marlon comes in ready to play. He had a slight injury in pre-season, but has now been training for a very good period.”

We wish Marlon all the best on Tyneside, and if this 6′1″ striker can get the goals for the Newcastle club, he will very quickly become a fan favorite on Tyneside.

And we are sure, he’s already very well aware of that.

Howay The Lads!!

    30… wow.

Well it shows how far we have gone. When we are happy to see a 30yr old Marlon at the club.

Happy to have him on “Loan” wouldn’t want him as a permanent striker.

Midfield is the priority imho as at present there’s very little creativity.

Ulucky Marlon, Hughton only plays one striker at a time so you will all have to wait your turns!

Should get on the Subs bench bY Xmas Toonsy
:) after scoring 20 goals in the reserves.
I think he will be a decent acquisition and i can see hom becoming a perm fixture after january if he performs.

    Hope he does well!!

    How the mighty have fallen..

He’s more than good enough for this division though and we need a bit of meat and aggression up front.

It’s not a bad signing for our current predicament.

P.s. If Hughton gives him the number 9 shirt, I will break down in floods of tears.

Would`nt have made it to the bench on a Bobby Robson team.
Is this where we are now, begging players from a team we regularly beat, not so long ago.
    Ah well !

But we aren’t a Bobby Robson side anymore, or a Premiership side. We are a Championship club and we need players who can do a job in this league. Harewood is one of them players. Id have like to get Eto’o or Ibrahimovic but…… not gonna happen :)

    @chuck

    Regularly beat?

Hmmm, no doubt you can get the stats to prove that but I was there at Bobby’s last game for us. Remember that game? Remember that score? I bloody do :(

Good luck to the lad. We’ve all been shouting for reinforcements and we are starting to get them slowly but surely.

wonder if Chris plans to play him in goal in his next 4-5-1.

  • 17 bobby_ollox // Sep 25, 2009 at 7:06 AM

A fading striker unable to get a job in the first team at Villa ( Villa mind you, not arsenal or man U, or real, or inter) agrees to play for us on loan for 3 months.

I see no reason for celebration.

If he keeps a future younf star out of the team for even one match, it will be a disgrace.

Marlon can do a job but not in the number 9. That is a special shirt and only for the special.
