Tuesday’s emphatic defeat at Peterborough in the Carling Cup shows some of the problems that confront Chris Hughton in trying to mount a challenge for success and promotion this season.
Colin and Chris – good and decent coaches
As we have said we were not too disappointed at going out of the cup, because job one this season has to be the league and getting promoted.
And although the young guns on Tuesday were disappointing in that one game, they have hardly been written off by the Newcastle manager.
But have the youngsters let the club down?
Chris addressed that today:
“No. We’d prefer not to look at it like that. If we could turn back the clock we’d prefer to still be in the competition and to have won the game,” .
“Our thoughts going into the game were we wanted to win it. (But it) wasn’t to be and we have to regroup now – as we did after the Blackpool game.”
The emphasis certainly is on regrouping, and preparing the team for tomorrow’s so important game at Ipswich.
And with Danny Simpson likely out with his ankle injury, right back may be given to Ryan Taylor, but why wouldn’t Chris give a chance to Zurab Khizanishvili there.
Or even play the Georgian in central defense with Coloccini, and move the capable Steven Taylor to right back?
Things that Chris is no doubt pondering before the team is announced tomorrow afternoon.
