News breaking today that Abdoulaye Meite is close to joining either Newcastle or Hull City on a year-long loan from West Bromwich Albion.
Abdoulaye Meite – loan move pending?
The 28 year-old center-back is keen to play first-team football again, before the World Cup, otherwise he has little chance of regaining his place in the Ivory Coast side for the World Cup in South Africa next summer.
Abdoulaye was supposed to be joining Hull City this summer, after WBA’s new manager Roberto Di Matteo said that he was not in his plans, but nothing happened.
Meite has made just two appearances this season in the Carling Cup, and wants to join a new club soon.
He told Sky Sports today:
“There are contacts but lets wait and see what will happen,”
“I can’t say anything yet. I need to play if I want to be involved in the World Cup.”
When Meite played for Bolton from 2006 until 2008, he looked a decent player, but we wonder if he will add to the central defender we already have at Newcastle – Taylor S, Coloccini, Zurab Khizanishvili, and young Tamas Kadar.
It would be hard for him to get past Coloccini and Taylor to start for Newcastle, and therefore from his point of view may not be what he’s looking for, although he would be a more than decent squad player for the Tyneside club.
The 20 times capped Ivory Coast International, who is 6’1″ tall, and turns 29 next month, played for Marseilles from 200 until 2006, making 172 league appearances, so Habib Beye may be able to provide some inside information on the player.
He seems to play only at center back, so unless he can play at full back – preferably left back, it’s not clear he would be a wise acquisition for the side at this point.
