Is Meite The Type Of Player Newcastle Need Right Now?

News breaking today that Abdoulaye Meite is close to joining either Newcastle or Hull City on a year-long loan from West Bromwich Albion.

Abdoulaye Meite – loan move pending?

The 28 year-old center-back is keen to play first-team football again, before the World Cup, otherwise he has little chance of regaining his place in the Ivory Coast side for the World Cup in South Africa next summer.

Abdoulaye was supposed to be joining Hull City this summer, after WBA’s new manager Roberto Di Matteo said that he was not in his plans, but nothing happened.

Meite has made just two appearances this season in the Carling Cup, and wants to join a new club soon.

He told Sky Sports today:

“There are contacts but lets wait and see what will happen,”

“I can’t say anything yet. I need to play if I want to be involved in the World Cup.”

When Meite played for Bolton from 2006 until 2008, he looked a decent player, but we wonder if he will add to the central defender we already have at Newcastle – Taylor S, Coloccini, Zurab Khizanishvili, and young Tamas Kadar.

It would be hard for him to get past Coloccini and Taylor to start for Newcastle, and therefore from his point of view may not be what he’s looking for, although he would be a more than decent squad player for the Tyneside club.

The 20 times capped Ivory Coast International, who is 6’1″ tall, and turns 29 next month, played for Marseilles from 200 until 2006, making 172 league appearances, so Habib Beye may be able to provide some inside information on the player.

He seems to play only at center back, so unless he can play at full back – preferably left back, it’s not clear he would be a wise acquisition for the side at this point.

What do you think?

Cant see it myself. Meite wants to go to a top flight team. So what would the point be in him coming to us? Also, i very much doubt that WBA would let him go to fellow promotion contenders.

Not a great combination for a centre half!

    We need a left back!

Yeah we need a winger.. how about Daniel de Ridder at Wigan? He’s not getting a game and always looks handy when i’ve seen him, former Ajax youth.. surely they’d let him out on loan

I rate DeRidder very highly. He is very tricky and i think he would make minced meat of whoever he is up against in this league.

    No.

Even if he’s the best in the world, we’re more than covered at CB.

We need either a left back or winger now.

not a bad player, reminds me of the way bramble is. certainly not a player we want or need. we need another cb but just for cover and if he wants first team hell nd to move on to some other team, cathcart would have been gd just for cover as we have Kadar as cover but we nd two cb jus to b safe, another lb (as we hav for two yrs like!) another winger desperately, we really are quite one-dimensonal at the mo and nd wingers to give some width. all in all we dont nd many more players to complete our squad another cb, lb and winger n we r set i think. o n an attacking midfielder. we arent bad atm those extra four would just complete our squad if we can make it through the year without any major injuries we sreally should finish top.

We should bring in Armand Traore on loan from Arsenal. He can play left-back and left-wing, both of which positions we are a bit short at… That would leave us with the following options:

    GK: Harper, Krul, Foster
    RB: Simpson, Zurab, R. Taylor
CB: S. Taylor, Coloccini, Zurab, Kadar
    LB: Enrique, Traore, Kadar
    RW: R. Taylor, Jonas
    LW: Jonas, Traore, Løvenkrands
CM: Smith, Nolan, Guthrie, Barton, Butt
ST: Ameobi, Carroll, Harewood, Ranger, Løvenkrands

which I think is a good enough squad to get promoted.

    R. Taylor………..Nolan………Smith……………Jonas

    ………………….Ameobi……….Carroll…………………..

Subs: Krul, Kadar, Zurab, Guthrie, Barton, Løvenkrands, Harewood

I think any LWB (left wing back) would be a good choice for us.

Bale or Traore? I’d probably take traore but then again Bale has experience with this league doesn’t he?

Mine would be the same apart from Carroll being replaced by Harewood, and Simpson by Khiz. Simply for their greater experience at top level.

The biggest thing for me to show a truly stabilised squad is to look at the bench. Man City can now challenge for top 4 because of their strength in depth, and considering how long our season is, we certainly need a couple more good faces in.

I doubt we’d get Traore or Bale ,Tottenham have too many injuries and Traore will be a big player play in the carling cup for them.

in terms of a winger De Ridders the way forward

Good points people, cheers. Nice to have an exchange of opinions without overwhelming negativism or personal attacks!

To be honest, I think Smith-Nolan is a CM pairing that’s good enough for mid-table PL… Smith will learn alot about his new role this year, and he can develop into a very good Scott Parker type DM. Nolan I have always liked because of his threat infront of goal, and he seems to have found a bit of confidence which is all he was missing. We also have Barton (who I would actually like sold due to his persona but who is a good player) and Guthrie who I like a lot as well, so in CM I think we are worthy of the Prem. I don’t rate Butt too highly, and while he will do a decent job for us this season in our promotion push, I hope he has a good last season for us now. Don’t think we should keep him for next season’s campaign.

PS. I am not sure if we will win the league, but I think we’ve got the best team in this league..

    RooneyToons,

You may be right about Traore..

I think we should approach Wenger and say: “Traore or Gibbs – let us loan one of them!” That way they can keep either as backup for Clichy/for CC.

As for the shouts re: de Ridder I think he’s a great player. Certainly very exciting to watch and can play on either wing. Only thing is, he may get kicked to pieces in this division! If he were able to perform to his potential consistenly, he would be playing for a top club.

i think he’s tricky enough not to get kicked to pieces and would be ideal for backup on either wing… there arnt many that can play both.

im struggling for left backs on loan though… any ideas?

Probably a decent loaner, but I believe we should be looking at people to bring in during the Xmas window, permanent players, who will be needed if we are to go back into the Pl.
Injuries aside, I think we have the basis for a promotion side right now.
But we must be prepared for it, it`s essential to survive that first season back and without the right players it could be tough.
There are two windows in which we can strengthen the side and our scouts should be prepared to find those young talents like Bassong and N`Zogbia.
Yeah I realize we are still short of bodies and the only answer is to grab people on loan.
However that should`nt distract from the rebuilding process, now is the time to start looking, we can always return the loanees and in many cases have no choice.
Hopefully MA is appraised of that and is ready to spend a few bob during the transfer windows.

Dont know what everyones getting so excited about.
We wont be singing this player, that’s almost a certainty.
Hughton said they will keep looking but there wasn’t anyone on the horizon.
This sort of story surfaces all the time – we’re always getting linked with players.

Time will tell but I instantly dismiss this story are rubbish.

As mentioned, we need a winger, not another CB.

Like Bramble? Interesting comment. Bramble was Wigans player of the year last year, described as a collossus by the commentator at the end of Chelsea game and currently sits 10th in the Premiership from which we were relegated. In fact most of the players ridiculed in these hallowed pages are now above us in the leagues and a lot of them playing in big cup each year. So while you are enititled to your opinion don’t expect anybody to pay attention to it. Including this one of course!

Meite suffers from Sol-itis so he’s definitely not a player we need at all. Any player who cannot take the rough with the smooth and keep battling on needs to be overlooked.

Anyone heard of Shaun Hutchinson? He’s a Geordie CB breaking through at Motherwell and has scored 3 goals in his first half dozen games. I’ve looked his club profile up and is seems he could be a left footed version of Steven Taylor (assuming when he used to play left wing he was actually left-footed).

And speaking of de Ridder, his clubmate Kapo isn’t seeing much action either lately. He’s certainly more of a winger than Lovenkrands.

im only echoeing everyones views, but i agree we need a left back and a winger, but i think meite would be a decent signing (hopefully to keep collocini out the team)
i think a good signing would be bale from spurs, yes he has problems with injurys but he would provide good cover and has a great delivery from dead ball situations. For a winger i think maybe merida from arsenal, ive see him a couple of times last season and he seems a good talent, skillful, he can pass the ball well and can cross the ball.
