Shola Ameobi is expected to return to full fitness by early December, to help in Newcastle’s promotion drive this season.
Shola Ameobi – back in two months
Newcastle manager Chris Hughton said today that the 6’2″ striker has had no adverse reaction to removing the cast around the foot and should be back.
Apparently the date they expected him back was around the end of December, which seemed a really long time to be out.
Shola seems to be made to measure for the Championship and he was Newcastle’s top player in August, and was the CCC player of the month, before being injured in the second half against Huddersfield Town in the League Cup on 26th August.
So Ameobi will have missed 3 months of the season, 14 league games, if he returns on December 5th, when we are at home to Watford.
Chris talked about Shola this morning:
“The good news with Shola is that he has no adverse reaction to the original injury and he’s started doing work on it again,”
“He’s with us over this fortnight and he’s continuing to work at it. We are looking at a pre-Christmas return for Shola, and we’re thinking it should be early December at the moment, which would obviously be a big boost for everyone because he is a big player for us.”
“He is with us at the moment, and I think it is a slightly frustrating time for him because he cannot really do any weight-bearing training with the foot at the moment. Obviously the most important thing is making sure he is right, so we don’t want to rush anything, but his progress has been quite good.”
“In his absence we’ve managed to get Marlon Harewood and he has brought some quality to the squad, but obviously the more players that we have capable of scoring goals the better, so it would be good to have him back.”
With Shola returning, it would seem unlikely we would extend the loan spell of Marlon Harewood, but that’s jumping the gun a bit, since the club will have to see how the 30 year-old performs before then.
But ostensibly Marlon was brought in as cover for Shola.
