Shay Given ,who left Newcastle last January, because he just couldn’t stand the stupid antics of owner Mike Ashley is pleased to see his former  club of 11 years at the top of the Championship.

Shay Given - when at Newcastle

Shay talked today about how pleased he is to see Newcastle doing so well this season, after last season’s nightmare of relegation.

Shay said:

“It’s great to see the start they’ve made this year, but there’ll be tough times ahead, because it’s a long, hard season in the Championship,”

“They’ve really got to knuckle down for the battle they’ll face week in week out, especially away from home against teams who will raise their game when Newcastle come to town.”

“It’s going to be a real character builder, but I know there are people in that dressing room who are up to the job.”

“I still speak to some of the lads – the likes of Steve Harper and Nicky Butt in particular – and it’s obvious there’s a real appetite there for the job in front of them.”

“They know that if they want to be back in the Premier League, they’ve got to knuckle down, win their home games and make themselves hard to beat away from home.”

Shay Given was the first to go last year, even before the nightmare of relegation, when others, such as Habib Beye, Oba Martins, Seb Bassong and Damien Duff also left.

Just for the record Shay played around 480 first class games for Newcastle, and was the best goalkeeper ever seen at Newcastle, and he’s still as good as ever at Manchester City.

I was gutted when Shay left, but I can’t say a bad word about it. His reasons for leaving were sound, and to be fair, he gave us far more loyalty than we deserve (Not the fans, but the various managers / owners / plc’s etc). When I pick my dream starting 11 for Newcastle throughout my life, his is the first name on it.
