England U19s took another step in qualifying for the European Championship Finals with a comfortable 3-1 victory over hosts Slovenia yesterday.
Ryan Donaldson – scored England’s first goal
And Newcastle’s Ryan Donaldson played the whole game, his first start for the team, and scored England’s first goal, his first goal at the level.
Noel Blake’s team had already won their first group game 3-1 against Finland last Friday, so this second victory means they qualify for the next stage with still a game to play.
Newcastle United striker Ryan Donaldson got things going with a good goal shortly before the interval and then Chelsea’s Jacob Mellis got the second in the 63rd minute.
Then substitute Roarie Deacon scored from the penalty spot with just over ten minutes to go, to see England through to the next round of the competition.
Noel Blake – new England U19 coach
England will be in action again in a couple of days time, when they take on Slovakia on Wednesday afternoon.
Ryan played a number of times for the England U17 team and did well, and this is a natural progression for the impressive youngster who is 18 and attended St. Cuthberts High School in Newcastle.
He has appeared 3 times this season for Newcastle with one start, and is yet another very promising youngster we have on Tyneside.
Ryan is a huge admirer of former Newcastle player Michael Owen and Thierry Henry, the former Arsenal star now at Barcelona.
