Newcastle manager Chris Hughton makes two changes to the side which was beaten at Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
Jonas Gutierrez and Geremi both come in for Peter Lovenkrands and Marlon Harewood.
Geremi hasn’t started since the 3-1 win over Plymouth last month, but we have to think his experience is what Chris thinks the team needs tonight.
The Cameroon star is likely to line up on the right-hand side of a four-man midfield with skipper Alan Smith and Danny Guthrie occupying the central berths, with Gutierrez on the left, where he usually links up well with Enrique.
Geremi can also set up chances with his crosses and he’s not bad at plonking them in from free kicks either – but we need Geremi to be on his top form tonight.
Six-goal top scorer Kevin Nolan will operate in an advanced role supporting lone striker Andy Carroll.
Jose Enrique, center-backs Danny Simpson and Zurab Khizanishvili and Ryan Taylor complete the back four – so still no room for Tamas Kadar. 🙁
TEAMS:
Scunthorpe United: Murphy, Byrne, Mirfin, Jones, Williams, Woolford, Togwell, J. Wright, McCann, Hayes, Hooper.
Subs: Slocombe, A. Wright, Sparrow, Thompson, Forte, Spence, Canavan.
Newcastle United: Steve Harper, Ryan Taylor, Zurab Khizanishvili, Danny Simpson, Jose Enrique, Danny Guthrie, Alan Smith (c), Kevin Nolan, Jonas Gutierrez, Geremi, Andy Carroll
Subs: Tim Krul, Tamas Kadar, Marlon Harewood, Nile Ranger, Peter Lovenkrands, Ryan Donaldson, Ben Tozer
Referee: Andy Penn.

Comment #7I actually dont think this team is bad in the circumstances. I think 5 in midfield is what we need and I hope Geremi is at RB not RM. The only prob is its carroll on his own.

Comment #14Have to hand it to Chris, he’s reacted to a poor run of performances with some sensible changes. He knows foremost we cannot lose tonight, and we had relative success with nolan off carroll.
With tayls in defence, nolan up top nd lovenk we have 3 other midfield options.

Comment #19Don’t know why, but I have a bad feeling about tonight.
Agree with both Harewood and Lover being dropped as they were pony on Saturday, I would have preferred Ranger to Carroll as he holds the ball up better and stay’s on his feet.
But this is football and we are all entitled to our views and opinion’s.

Comment #33Looking at the to-days lineup makes me think how far this club has gone downhill.
Here we are with a team that few would make the bench, under Sir Bobby.
Not only that, but the fact we are not sure if we can beat f*****g Scunthorpe.
Hello Leeds !

Comment #37Simpson played really well at centre back in one of our home games. Everyone was crying out for Krul to play until he showed he wasn’t ready, we can’t afford the luxury of blooding in kids that might make mistakes, Kadar didn’t exactly cover himself in glory in our cup games
