It is now an interesting situation to see if Mike Ashley will appoint Chris Hughton as the new permanent manger at Newcastle after two disastrous defeats on the trot.
Mike Ashley – will he still appoint Hughton full time?
After all Middlesbrough are just one point behind Newcastle and that’s not good enough for their Chairman Steve Gibson, who sacked manager Gareth Southgate at 11:30 pm last night, after Middlesbrough had beaten Derby County 2-0 at the Riverside last night.
But quite honestly we don’t think Mike will change his mind, although it would be sensible to wait a week or two to see if Chris can turn this thing around – but Mike will not do that.
When has he ever done the sensible thing in the past?
Chris seemed confident enough after the game as he said:
“In the game we had a lot of chances but we were not clinical enough,” “The manner in which we conceded both goals was poor because we didn’t deal with situations.”
“Their goalkeeper was man of the match, which tells you all you need to know about how the game went, but if you concede goals in the way we did, then you cannot expect to win football matches.”
“The dressing room is very low but I have no choice but to try and lift the players ahead of Saturday’s game. We need to be more clinical. This is a game we should have won, there’s no doubt about that.”
“As far as I know, nothing is different and I’m confident the situation has not changed.”
It seems like Newcastle have been missing Steven Taylor and Coloccini as both goals were sloppy ones – but that’s what happens when the squad just isn’t big enough.
Of course most Newcastle fans would have hoped Mike Ashley had already left the club, and with just two points from our last 4 games, and the likelihood that Ashley will be staying at Newcastle until the summer at least – things couldn’t look much bleaker for Newcastle fans right now.
We need a win against Doncaster Rovers on Saturday to turn things around.

Comment #41People saying “oh and everyone thought we would do a Leeds and look at us now” remember leeds made in to the playoff final against Watford the season before they got relegated into Div1 (if I’m not mistaken). So there is still time yet for Ashley to screw us properly!!!!!!!!

Comment #44More asset stripping in January and no incoming players….by then we will have many more injuries and probably suspensions…I see it turning into a very sad season for my beloved Toon.

Comment #45the last published accounts show Ashley put in 20 million the fans only put in 59 million, obviously Ashley went to a better school than me, as i made it less than half what he did, well what does he expect from a thick Geordie. yes that’s right Mr Ashley you cant count, on top of all the other thing he cant do, bet someone else sired his kids to, as his daughter far to classy to be his.

Comment #46I really hope not.. ive always said that hughton is a great No. 2 but should never be given the managers job.. especially at newcastle where hes been no.2 so the players like him and chris wont get hard with the players.. he is to scared to drop big rep players.. shearer although has hardly any experience.. would install discipline and wouldnt be scared of dropping players if there not performing.
in my eyes we need to get shearer in now. so he can mould the squad his way before next season. i think shearer would get us promoted.. and he’d also have 7 months experience with us. [thats usually as long a time before we change our managers anyway] and then he could have whole pre-season with them before kicking off in the prem next season.

Comment #47Shearer is not the answer-we need a manager with experience.
Shearer is not the answer I repeat.

Comment #48Agreed AlanSmith, however, not so sure Shearer is the answer like, but I would rather see him get the gig than CH (Done a decent job, nice guy, no manager tho). Looks like the fizzy pop teams have sussed us too, so we need somebody who can at least switch tactics, and as you say, isn’t afraid of dropping the big names.

Comment #50“In any team, if you’re going to get a couple of injuries in a particular position (centre half) then you’re always going to be stretched. But what are the choices? To bring in loans willy nilly? No. If you’ve got players out long term that might be something you look at, but that isn’t the case here.”
– Like a puppet on a string!!!
I think that 2-3 players being injured for 1 or 2 games here and there are worse than long term injuries., in a way. As it breaks up the consistancy in the team.
We have no players to fight for positions, and the positions we have plenty of players in, dont seem bothered about fighting for a place, they seem more interested in picking up their Premiership wage.

Comment #51shearer is the answer as no one good enough will take the job, he is the only chance we have, unless we are taken over by someone extremely wealthy that wants to dump a load of money.

Comment #52Sir Jason Toon.. and G..
Yer i’d rather have a more experienced manager.. but i cant think of anyone that:
a] plays the attacking football us fans expect.
b] would agree to work for mike ashley.
c] would have the passion that the newcastle job needs.
Shearer is the only one that would.. and he’d instantly demand the respect of everyone again.

Comment #55hitman.. maybe not.. but if he wouldnt.. the only other alternatives are.. chris hughton and joe kinnear.. and if that happens we might just scrape a play off place. at best

Comment #57one reason shearer will not get the job is Ashley is scared stiff of him, he seen what happened over Keegan, and would not be able to manipulate;ate him. Ashley is a coward, he cant see why shearers the perfect manager at this time, as he will get the time needed to break the perpetual failure. Ashley cant see beyond his own nose, when he does go cap in hand to shearer, he will have to do it all shearers way, as he will hold the cards, now he could get a compromise. talk about decision making, Ashley will be used, in business studies for years, how not to run a business.

Comment #71Didn’t the club reject Shearer (110% Ashley’s best decision?) on the grounds that appointing a permanent manager may discourage future buyers who would want their own man in charge…..so now we get stuck with Hughton? – Go figure, Mike.
This is the bloke who has dragged us through the mud and back of whom the Tribunal said:
“Moreover, we reject the club’s attempt to rely on the various offers which it made both prior to and during the hearing to settle the claim since none of them involved the club’s acceptance that he had been constructively dismissed and all of them involved a condition of secrecy or confidentiality.
“We direct that the club should pay Mr Keegan’s costs on an indemnity basis given the manner in which it conducted this litigation: it’s defence on the primary liability issue was, in our view, wholly without merit and it chose to make entirely unfounded allegations against Mr Keegan.”
Unredicatbility, Secrecy and Lies – sounds like Mony Python’s ‘Spanish Inquisition’ sketch.

Comment #74Dave 1961- No business school would use a football club as an economics model for the simple reason that the purchase of its wares are distorted by the loyalty of the fans.
The Toon has the most loyal fans in the world and they keep purchasing even though the product is inferior to others on offer.
Cashley knows that and will cash in until the fans stop purchasing the product.

Comment #76did any of you read this 1 >>>>> 4. Thirdly, we direct that the Club should pay all of Mr Keegan’s costs. Although part of the hearing and preparation was taken up on the question of whether Clause 14.8.1 applied and, if not, what would be the appropriate measure of damages, this represented only a very small proportion of both. Mr Keegan succeeded on all other significant points. Moreover, we reject the Club’s attempt to rely on the various offers which it made both prior to and during the hearing to settle the claim since none of them involved the Club’s acceptance that he had been constructively dismissed and all of them involved a condition of secrecy or confidentiality.
