Marlon Harewood has been a disappointment so far in his loan spell.
Marlon Harewood – chance to shine today?
Marlon has been the least successful of our three loan signings, and has been unable to command a first team starting position.
But Chris Hughton has denied the player has been any trouble since he arrived on Tyneside four weeks ago.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for him here and that’s generally the case with loan signings.”
“Whether they’re a young player another club’s looking to get out for experience, or a player who is not playing in another club’s first team, it’s a good opportunity for them to show what they can do.”
“He appreciates the chance he’s been given here, he’s excited, he’s settled in very well with the group. With the spirit we have here now the next part is to be playing regularly and scoring goals. He was okay with the decision to leave him out – disappointed, but he was fine.”
“My decision to leave him out on Tuesday was very much tactical. We had a game on Saturday, we have another game coming up and I wanted to play Kevin Nolan in an advanced position.”
“Although he came here with a feeling that he wants to get games, he knows it’s within team tactics. You can never guarantee a player a game and Marlon’s no different.”
“When we took him we knew he’d missed a fair chunk of that pre-season period. We knew he’d had a fair amount of training under his belt since then, but not many games, so we knew there was a possibility he’d get stronger with each game and each day’s training.”
Harewood still has a couple of months of his loan spell left, before Hughton makes a decision on whether to extend his loan in the January transfer window.
Shola Ameobi is due back in about 5 weeks, and we have to hope that Shola is in the form he showed at the beginning of the season, when sometimes he was simply unplayable.
Hughton has declared he will definitely strengthen the squad at the start of January, one way or the other, and of course he should have more say on that now he has been offered the manager’s job on a permanent basis.
We’ll just have to hope that Mike Ashley will help Chris strengthen the squad, because if he doesn’t our promotion dreams could go up in smoke.
