Number One Job – Get Newcastle Promoted This Season

Nicky Butt talked today about how important it is for Newcastle United to get promoted – and it has to be this season.

Nicky Butt – Newcastle must get promoted

Starting tomorrow night at Bramall Lane it will be important for Newcastle to put together a good win streak so we can keep on top of the Championship, and maybe even start to pull away form the 3rd placed team, so we can get automatic promotion next May.

Mike Ashley has said that’s  his number one aim too, and may even buy new players in January, but with Mike we’ll believe that if and when it happens.

Nicky said today:

“From my point of view we should be here to try and get the club back to the Premier League because we were a major factor in why we are where we are, because we didn’t perform,”

“I have always maintained that last season, as players, we escaped criticism because things were blamed on what happened upstairs and in the background. I think if you speak to players honestly, we should have stayed up with the squad we had.”

At least Nicky is being truthful there, because it was the players who have to take responsibility for the club’s relegation, whatever nonsense was going on with Mike Ashley and his cronies.

The wage bill at the club last season was a huge £74M and with players of that class we should never have been relegated.

But the team was out-fought too many times by clubs like Stoke, Wigan, Blackburn, Hull and to be fair  to Ashley, which is always difficult these days,  he just didn’t get his moneys-worth from the players last season.

And on the difference between the Championship and the Premier League, Nicky added:

“It’s shocks! In the Premier League you can guess that eight times out of ten Manchester United are going to win or Liverpool are going to win. But in the Championship there are all sorts of upsets.”

“Going away from home is really difficult. Blackpool was a massively difficult game for me – the grass was long, the wind was swirling.”

“But they are not going to put a nice pitch down for us to pass the ball about on. They are going to make it difficult and we have to deal with it.”

“We have to get out of this league by any means, whether it is a horrible 0-0 or a horrible 1-0. We need to get out and start afresh next season.”

“We have a lot of players like Alan Smith and Kevin Nolan who will dig deep and hopefully get us out of this mess we are in.”

That’s the right attitude from Nicky, but let’s be clear that the players still have an awful lot to make up for last season’s pathetic performances, that was responsible for our relegation.

A 6 or 7 game win streak is what we need now, and let hope that win streak is up to 2 by tomorrow night.

Howay The Lads!!

don’t change manager, don’t tinker with a proven team, … don’t change ownership… till we are safely back upstairs.

I mentioned yesterday that Ashley will continue stripping assets in January.

His agent, Pedro Jimenez-Bravo, is quoted by The People as saying: “We know European clubs are interested.

“We have held meetings with Newcastle but there is an option for the player to leave – although it must be a good offer.”

The 26-year-old moved to St James’ Park from Real Mallorca in July 2008 and is still to find the net in 43 games on Tyneside.

Italian giants Roma are reported to be leading the race for his services.

This is the first rumblings of that…prepare for Nolan,Collo,Harper,Smith,Taylor,Ranger and Carrol to be offloaded once we are mid table in January.

As dispicable as Ashley is on several levels, I don’t exactly see anyone else busting a gut to come in and pay the salaries, running costs etc etc. Certainly not Moat, that’s for sure.

Shepherd stitched us up so badly with so much toxic debt, only an idiot (yes Ashley) would have taken us on.

If we can get 6m a year just for a name change, then really in the scheme of things, what is the big deal ? Who remembers Roker park any more !

So thats it lads , nicky has bad games because the grass is too long . Here was me thinking it was because he could not pass a ball no matter which surface he plays on and that he has no pace . 🙂
