Kilgallon Rumored Again As Newcastle Target – But For £4M?

There’s a very small report in The Sun this morning that says Chris Hughton wants to bring in Matthew Kilgallon of  Sheffield United in January.

Matthew Kilgallon – again linked with Newcastle move

This is not the first time Newcastle have been linked with Kilgallon, whom they tried to sign on the last day of the transfer window in September, but that fell through, for whatever reason.

However it’s the Sun that’s reporting the news this morning, so we should take it with a pinch of salt,  that Newcastle are lining up a £4M bid to bring center-back Matt Kilgallon to Tyneside.

That would make the 25 year-old 6’2″ Englishman Chris Hughton’s first signing since being named Newcastle’s permanent boss.

That seems a steep price to pay for a player who has never played in the Premier League, and whose contract runs out next summer, and would then be available for nothing as a free agent.

And it’s £1.5M more than we offered the Blades in September for the player.

But that’s typical of Newcastle in the transfer market – remember when we could have signed Andrei Asharvin, now at Arsenal,  for £8M a year last January – but the club dithered and didn’t?

But during the absence of Coloccini and Steven Taylor, the Toon defense has not looked steady, and if  the club brings in Matthew,  that may signal that on-loan center-back Zurab Khizanishvili will not be signed in January.

But we could do a lot worse than extending the Georgian International’s loan spell through the end of the season, and then decide, based on his performances, whether we want to make that move permanent.

We do expect Chris to try to sign Danny Simpson in January, but surely we can get the Manchester United right back for around £2M – at most.

Comments welcome.

I would take him for 2M, not a penny more, and frankly only as cover for Colo / Staylor. After all, he has to be a better option than Zurab. I reckon Manyoo will do business for Simpson at 2M though, as they are well stocked with RB’s and we have already proven to SAF that Simpson cannot play at CB. Have to agree with the comments above about wide men being our priority though. We need some creativity from somewhere.

We do need cover in that area, however, the main pairing at CB will be Taylor and Collocini (although he looked a bit rusty last night).

Id like to think those two have had their share of injuries and will play throughout the rest of the season, so we will only need a couple of squad CBs, maybe 2 mill each at the most, as they will only play when our first picks are injured.

Still unsure about Kadar, but the games hes getting can only do him good. Simpson we do need to try and get on a permanent deal. And, I am very impressed with Enrique at the moment.

Like everyone else though, we need a clever, creative attacking midfielder, as again last night we seemed to lump the ball up to Carroll/Ranger and it doesnt give them much hope, although they always keep going.

I think because Nolan has started scoring he has decided to strengthen other areas, but although Nolan is doing well, we need a creative player, maybe that could even let us play Carroll/Ameobi(?) up top on their own, depending on the quality of any wingers we bring in. Jonas looked uninterested last night too.

All in all, 2 new squad CBs, flair Midfielder and winger.

Nice to have a bit of luck in the last 2 games! Cant grumble with position at the moment, however, I feel the lack of flair will cost us later in the season. I cant see us knocking 5 past anyone, unlike West Brom.

    Howay the lads!

If they’re willing to let go Jonas for 6 mill,i’m sure they wont be that stupid to pay 4 mill for this guy.

It just doesnt make sense at all.

@Patizan – Make sense and the Toon are 2 phrases that don’t seem to belong together any more! But I hope you are correct.

I went to the game in Home fans family stand and got free tickets to players lounge after the game which was bloody surreal!! Didn’t see FCB tho but the lads looked like they were in great spirits!

The game was a bit touch and go for me, they SHOULD have been 3-0 up at half time but couldn’t take chances but then again Carroll should have got 2 with his header/volley!

My 2 pennies worth is that we need to shift on Jonas, he sits too deep to be a winger and when he runs he does look good but then does naff all with it! Enrique is an absolute beast, they just didn’t know what to do with him! Even when they had the ball and he ran at em they just kicked it out! Only trouble is he’s gettin in those positions and nobody is with him, and he doesn’t want to shoot! Player like Beckford would be fantastic in those situations.

Was a good game to watch, Butt played surprisingly well in the second half, Smith did what he had to, Nolan needs to shed a few stone, 4-4-2 with Carroll and Ranger we looked great! Carroll relaxed and showed some nice skill, Ranger only had 12minutes or so, did a few nice layoffs and tracked back well. Oh and who needs Shay Given?????

Come January Id like to see our team

2 new wingers would cost 3-4mil each? New striker say Beckford pop in 4 mil were well away!

@Mikey25 – Nice suggestion for the line up, but it depends on an 11-12M outlay from the Fat Controller. I will believe that when I see it mate. I reckon it is more realistic that we will have around 4-5M on players in the window, and continue to rely on loan deals.

This is the kind of player we need tbh, hes on free at the moment.

If we do sign him i think that he will bring creativity to the team and thats what we need.!

Didn’t quite understand the last 2 substitutions last night?

Sheff Utd throwing everything at us, us camped in our penalty box with still 20 mins to go, and first we see Ranger for Simpson? Although you could forgive CH for thinking about finishing the game off with a break. But then Jonas for Harewood!!! WTF

@craigmag – the general consesus in the crowd last night was that Jonas was heading for a booking, so needed to come off, and Simpson wasn’t cutting the mustard so Rtaylor had to drop back. As for thier replacements, I have no idea what was going on there! Happy to see Ranger on the field, but he appeared to be sat in the Midfield, as for Harewood, I am as happy to see him on the field as I am happy to see the mackems score hat-tricks!

Perhaps with Ed’s knowledge from his time at IBM he could back-trace the IP address of the idiot above and post his address details on the blog. I’m sure many people, including myself would be more than happy to aproach the miscreant and dish out some much-needed education?

Sorry Fak_you_ashley but he looks decidedly one footed and that would be found out rather quickly in the fizzy league let alone the prem.

If I could see that in 3 quick tubes then how long would it take for people who work in football to spot it.

He is just using his left foot to stand on.
