There’s a very small report in The Sun this morning that says Chris Hughton wants to bring in Matthew Kilgallon of Sheffield United in January.
Matthew Kilgallon – again linked with Newcastle move
This is not the first time Newcastle have been linked with Kilgallon, whom they tried to sign on the last day of the transfer window in September, but that fell through, for whatever reason.
However it’s the Sun that’s reporting the news this morning, so we should take it with a pinch of salt, that Newcastle are lining up a £4M bid to bring center-back Matt Kilgallon to Tyneside.
That would make the 25 year-old 6’2″ Englishman Chris Hughton’s first signing since being named Newcastle’s permanent boss.
That seems a steep price to pay for a player who has never played in the Premier League, and whose contract runs out next summer, and would then be available for nothing as a free agent.
And it’s £1.5M more than we offered the Blades in September for the player.
But that’s typical of Newcastle in the transfer market – remember when we could have signed Andrei Asharvin, now at Arsenal, for £8M a year last January – but the club dithered and didn’t?
But during the absence of Coloccini and Steven Taylor, the Toon defense has not looked steady, and if the club brings in Matthew, that may signal that on-loan center-back Zurab Khizanishvili will not be signed in January.
But we could do a lot worse than extending the Georgian International’s loan spell through the end of the season, and then decide, based on his performances, whether we want to make that move permanent.
We do expect Chris to try to sign Danny Simpson in January, but surely we can get the Manchester United right back for around £2M – at most.
