Chris Hughton has come out and said today that he will have the final say on players coming and going at the club.
Mike Ashley – not picking any players
But that’s no surprise since the club has done away with their Director of Football, Dennis Wise, so to speak, and presumably the manager now reports into Derek LLambias.
Chris said today:
“I will have the final say.” “I will fight tooth and nail to keep players,” “My intention is not to make this squad weaker. I have had no indication that there are any players here who want to leave.”
“That is what I would expect. If we are able to sustain the position we are in, it’s more a case of adding than letting people go.”
Mike had said he will be the final say, but that’s in the sense that he would look at how much the transfer price was, or the loan price and wages, and make a financial decision that way.
He’s essentially the Newcastle Board, as Derek LLambias indicated earlier in the week. But Mike didn’t mean by that, that he would actually be picking the players – no way.
Chris is smart enough to have in his contract that he will decide who comes and goes – from a choice viewpoint.
It’s only if the manager’s contracts say they have that responsibility, and that’s not the case behind the scenes, as recently seen with cases for both Kevin Keegan and Alan Curbishley (West Ham), then that’s a problem – a big problem.
And both those managers won their cases for unfair dismissal, by proving rather easily, that players had been bought and sold without their knowledge and authority.
Notice that’s not always the case, and it didn’t seem like Jose Mourinho, when he was at Chelsea, had that full authority.
He didn’t want Andriy Shevchenko at the club, but owner Roman Abramovich brought him in anyway from AC Milan – and of course he was a total flop.
We have to hope none of that happens at Newcastle now, but we very much doubt it will, because Mike doesn’t know enough about players, and hardly will want another League Tribunal. He’s not that daft, is he?
The fans are all very nervous about Mike right now, that’s so very true, but we think Chris Hughton is a sensible straight forward guy, and exactly what we need right now.
We’re hoping to see some good sensible acquisitions in January, and it will be important Chris gets it right, if we are to be promoted in May.
Another win is what we need against Peterborough United today, in front of a big supportive crowd at St. James’ Park.
Then we can all enjoy the next two weeks at the top of the league during the International break. Oh, that will be so good. 😀
