Steven Taylor, Guthrie and Harewood All Start

November 7th, 2009 by Ed Harrison · 158 Comments

nufc-crestpeterborough

Chris Hughton makes three changes to the side which won at Sheffield United on Monday night.

As expected Steven Taylor returns for Tamas Kadar, Danny Guthrie comes in to give some creativity in midfield in place of Nicky Butt, and Marlon Harewood will get his big chance in front of the Newcastle fans this afternoon.

It looks like we are playing 4-4-2 with both Andy Carroll and Marlon Harewood up front – and that’s good.

Taylor is back from a three-week hamstring injury, and Ryan Taylor, surprisingly gives way to give Danny Guthrie a chance.

Of course this team selection will be based on how the lads have looked in training, and it looks a creative side ready to score some goals – and that’s good.

The subs bench is particularly strong – Tim Krul, Nicky Butt, Ryan Taylor, Geremi, Nile Ranger, Tamas Kadar and Peter Lovenkrands – so Chris can change the game if he needs to in the second half.

We would like to see Peter Lovenkrands coming through more than he’s shown so far this season, but Ranger, Lovenkrands and Taylor (R) are 3 players who can score goals.

Alan Smith wears the captain’s armband again because Butt is on the bench.

TEAMS

Newcastle United: Steve Harper, Danny Simpson, Steven Taylor, Fabricio Coloccini, Jose Enrique, Danny Guthrie, Alan Smith (c), Kevin Nolan, Jonas Gutierrez, Marlon Harewood, Andy Carroll
Subs: Tim Krul, Nicky Butt, Ryan Taylor, Geremi, Nile Ranger, Tamas Kadar, Peter Lovenkrands

Peterborough: Joe Lewis, Charlie Lee, Tommy Rowe, Craig Morgan, Ryan Bennett, Chris Whelpdale, Dean Keates, Toumani Diagouraga, Danny Rose, George Boyd, Craig Mackail-Smith
Subs: Ben Amos, Russell Martin, Gabriel Zakuani, Lee Frecklington, Paul Coutts, Aaron McLean, Shaun Batt

Referee: Andy D’Urso

Attendance: big

Ah!!! I am so amped for this game. Does anyone know where i could get a live audio or video feed? (I in South Africa).

I love the line-up, looks good

    HOWAY THE LADS!!!

  • 2 filthymag // Nov 7, 2009 at 3:24 PM

Looking for a feed too. Still a little unsure about Harewood. His game against Donny Rovers was shocking

  • 3 Big Dave // Nov 7, 2009 at 3:31 PM

Steve R you should get links for the game closer to kick off

  • 4 Thump // Nov 7, 2009 at 3:34 PM

@Steve R: Check about five minutes before KO. JustinTV usually has some audio streams so have a deek around there.

We should be playing 4-4-2 Diamond seeing as we’ve been fairly successful with that in the past – with the same midfield iirc. I don’t see why Hare is up with Carroll, though – we need some pace up there.

I wonder how McLoven is doing with his family issues, though…

  • 5 Ed Harrison // Nov 7, 2009 at 3:36 PM

3rd placed Cardiff getting beat 3-2 at Swansea with 5 minutes to go ……

  • 6 alkinou // Nov 7, 2009 at 3:38 PM

Does anyone knows if there’s a chance to have a video stream or will it most certainly be only audio?

  • 7 filthymag // Nov 7, 2009 at 3:43 PM

Perhaps Hughtons plan is to fool them with Harewood and then stun them with Ranger?

  • 8 filthymag // Nov 7, 2009 at 3:43 PM

    C’mon Swansea!

  • 9 Edd Case // Nov 7, 2009 at 3:50 PM

Cardiff lost, just need links now…

  • 10 Danish_Magpie // Nov 7, 2009 at 3:52 PM

Would’ve preferred R. Taylor in the team rather than Guthrie. Let’s see what Harewood can do today; this is a big chance for him. Glad Hughton does not feel obliged to play Butt when Smith-Nolan is our best CM pairing.

I think Jonas will get his first goal for us today!

Subs should be Ranger for Harewood at some point, and R. Taylor for Guthrie at some point.

  • 11 yemozone // Nov 7, 2009 at 3:53 PM

  • 17 micbush // Nov 7, 2009 at 3:57 PM

Chris Houghton sees the players in training everyday, so i guess we’ll have to trust him.

unless we lose of course ;)

  • 18 sahota // Nov 7, 2009 at 3:58 PM

  • 19 Thump // Nov 7, 2009 at 3:58 PM

  • 61 Kevin // Nov 7, 2009 at 4:33 PM

Good point Big Dave – nothing like a good ol’ LASHING to make my Saturday. Jonas’ groin went apparently. Hopefully it won’t be too bad.
    I agree wit Toon_Fresh – it’s a results-oriented business, Tortoisewood!

    yes

  • 69 Toon_Fresh // Nov 7, 2009 at 4:48 PM

Yeah he’s such a crucial player for us. Some people dont like to admit it because of his crossing but he takes people on and really sets the pace for us

  • 70 Fans Should Own The Club // Nov 7, 2009 at 4:48 PM

Sounds like the boys have taken their foot off the gas a bit… don’t like that. By the sound of it, we should be able to thump them for 5 or so.

  • 71 Zangwill_Ho // Nov 7, 2009 at 4:49 PM

peter lovenkrands?? may be can speed up the winger side

  • 72 MacToon // Nov 7, 2009 at 4:50 PM

We slowed right down when Jonas went off….. we just gonna play for the 2-0 win now…. hope not.

  • 73 Fans Should Own The Club // Nov 7, 2009 at 4:53 PM

I don’t think Lovenkrantz plays well on the wing, really.

  • 74 Alex // Nov 7, 2009 at 4:58 PM

where is lualua ? he could maybe bring a bit of pace on the wing , but never seems to make the bench . Is he injured ?

  • 82 BT9MAG // Nov 7, 2009 at 5:05 PM

  • 112 AndyNUFC // Nov 7, 2009 at 5:35 PM

    Fkin Lunatic.

  • 134 AndyNUFC // Nov 7, 2009 at 5:45 PM

Offer £6.5 – 7.5M for Johnson I reckon. We are crying out for a good left footed winger.

Simpson’s out of contract at the end of the season too, so don’t pay a penny for him. Offer a pre contract in January and peanuts to Man Utd, if not, just re-sign him on a free at the end of the season.

To be honest, i’d offer Sol Campbell a pay as you play 1 year contract, pending promotion he’ll get an extra year. I think that would be best for both parties and show we won’t just allow him to fleece us like he did to Notts County.

  • 135 toonoholic // Nov 7, 2009 at 5:45 PM

how long till ranger gets his first goal ?

  • 136 Toon_Factor // Nov 7, 2009 at 5:46 PM

  • 137 Ross // Nov 7, 2009 at 5:46 PM

Would have liked to keep the clean sheet to be honest. Would like to see another goal to get the 3 goal margin back aswell. Sounds like a canny performance from us today though, Ranger got a massive ovation when he came on like.

  • 138 will die for the toon army // Nov 7, 2009 at 5:47 PM

  • 141 Ross // Nov 7, 2009 at 5:48 PM

SJT- i wasnt meaning gutted literally, i just chose the term instead of “bugger” or something like that. Obviously i’m not unhappy about the fact we’re winning 3-1, that wouldnt make any sense.

  • 142 AndyNUFC // Nov 7, 2009 at 5:49 PM

I’m happy with the points and 3 goals, but playing the second bottom league team, if we allow ourselves to become complacent when on top, then what sort of attitude is that to mounting a promotion challenge?

  • 143 Zangwill_Ho // Nov 7, 2009 at 5:49 PM

Toon Factor-i’d say its more the role he’s been given. For his age, his hold up play is brilliant. He has a very good first touch and is excellent with his back to goal. He’s not playing the leading striker role being asked to put the ball in the net. His record whilst in the youths/reserves shows he can score goals at will for me and he’s scoring for England aswell. He’ll get his goal sooner rather than later and there’ll be more to come after he’s found the net once.

Seriously if people start doubting Ranger then I may as well give up. Sick of fans jumping on player’s backs without giving them a chance.

Ranger is 19, and his hold up play is unbelievably good. He just needs a good run in the team to transfer his England U19 reserve level goal scoring tally to the Championship.

Six points clear of the play-off places. Keep it up.
