Short-Term Thinking Could Cost Newcastle

It seems that Danny Simpson’s wage demands could scuttle his move to Newcastle United in January, although the Newcastle Journal is reporting today that Newcastle and Manchester United still have to agree a fee for the player, who is out of contract in the summer.

Danny Simpson – talks have broken down

While Danny has played well for the team he would still need to improve to be a good Premier League player – but it seems like most of our readers think he can do just that.

94% want Newcastle to sign Danny, so the lad has the fans on his side, and that’s not surprising because Danny has always been committed to the Magpies’ cause and can also play along the back-line.

We also have to think that Ashley is thinking only until until the summer, and wants to get the Newcastle books looking good, so that he can sell the club.

One of the figures that’s important will be the wage bill, which last season was a whopping 74% of the revenue (which was almost£100M).

According to reports, that wage bill is down to around £35M  so we are in much better financial shape than we were. But we can also overdo it, by going too far in the opposite direction and being too stingy with the wages.

We hope a deal can be arranged with Danny, who is a good lad, and he just loves the club and the Newcastle area. Since Monday night’s vital game with WBA could be his last, we know the Newcastle fans will give him a great welcome, and hopefully we can get all 3 points from that game to catapult the club forward towards promotion, which is job one this season.

We’ll have a report out on our transfer targets before the weekend is out – but if Ashley ever wants to make up with the fans, which may now be impossible, he must help Chris to strengthen the side in January, and from Chris’ comments this morning he definitely wants Danny at Newcastle permanently.

We hope that will happen for both Danny and the Newcastle club’s benefit.

I think this is the most important signing of January, if we can sign Danny Simpson and keep the rest of the squad (bar Geremi) then we should be fine. We could definitely do with an extra defender or 2, as opposed to another striker. Just my opinion.

We deffo need cover the full back slots (both sides), Simpson fits the bill. Wouldn’t mind a bit of creativity from the midfield if we have any cash to splash? Would deffo go for a creative midfielder over a striker.

    Edlines already!

“Short Term thinking could cost Newcastle”

Yet Chris Hughton states ““During the summer, there was a major decision to be made. Thankfully, the decision was that a lot of the players who were on big money would stay. The club could have pushed it the other way and decided to get rid of every big earner on the books, but they didn’t.

“The statement from the club was that we wanted to have a go, and that in turn meant continuing to carry the massive wage bill we’ve got.

“For this division, we still have an incredible wage bill.

“But I would rather have the senior players in the squad and have to run a tight ship than have sold a lot more players in the summer but have a bit more money to spend.”

Looks anything but short term thinking to me. Ed you seems to enjoy drumming up trouble – wonder if youre advising NUST on how to cause it too.

Stardust – If you cant say anything constructive don’t say anything at all. 99% of people on this blog appreciate Ed’s hard work over the last few years, OK it can be sensationalist, but he has to keep the readers coming somehow. My advice if you don’t like it, don’t visit.

Don Juan – My apologies – I didnt know this blog was an Ed appreciation society and I had thought it was a blog where debate occurs about NUFC.

My use of the word Edline – refers to stories that bear little resemblance to the real situation. It sits perfectly thank you. And as you can see the reality is far different from the Edline – and Ed has a duty to NUFC (as a supporter) not to cause disruption and harm where there isnt any trouble)

Blogs are full of opinion, and I am entitled to mine – so please keep your snivelling for Ed private – email him and tell him you’re in love – it’ll be much less embarrassing for you than romancing him in public.

    Good grief.
Just when I was delighted to see Ed’s blog back, who should crawl under the crack of the door but the preppy poison dwarf.
    Isn’t that just like life…

When was the last time we brought on a decent full-back from our own youth system? We don’t seem to have much success in that department. Aaron Hughes was the decent one. I hark back to the times of David Craig, Frank Clark, Craggs, Guthrie and Alan Kennedy when we seemed to have a conveyor-belt of good full-backs. Do our reserve and academy coaches put much store by them I wonder?

Hear his present wages are around 15k. per week
and we are offering 9k., I`m talking about Simpson.
15k is not considered a particularly high wage in what could be the PL next season and where do you find a PL class defender for that kinda money ?
Surely being smart in the market does`nt mean being cheap.

Bullocks. I was pleased to see Ed’s blog back up and running and was about to end my self-imposed exile from contributing to all of the [frankly second rate] blogs that had supplanted this blog ( My rule is that any blog that the odious Stardust appears on is not worth being part of) when up pops – guess who?- on Ed’s resurrected blog. So off I go again…..Bye
