Newcastle Pursue 6’3″ Nigerian Striker Again

Sky Sports are reporting that Newcastle United are again interested in Malmo’s Edward Ofere.

Edward Ofere – bound for Tyneside?

Newcastle were interested in the 6’3″ Malmo striker last October, as we reported back then, and apparently Newcastle have been keeping tabs on the 23 year-old.

Apparently Newcastle scouts are said to have been at Malmo’s first pre-season friendly, as they easily beat Danish side Koge 5-1, with Ofere scoring twice.

Malmo have again said they they have not heard anything from Newcastle (but seemingly would like to):

Malmo’s CEO Pelle Svensson to Fotbolldirekt:

“If Newcastle are interested in Ofere then it’s just for them to contact us but they need to hurry up as the transfer window closes soon,”

“We haven’t heard anything yet. But we are ready for an offer on Ofere.”

“No club has contacted us since the last season ended, but of course we are prepared. We need to be with a player like Ofere.”

“Of course we have a plan if Ofere would leave. We need to have.”

Ofere has again refused to comment on the latest speculation surrounding him, as he said today:

“It’s my agent who handles all that.”

“I am focusing on Malmo FF. I am not going to move now.”

We don’t know too much about Ofere, other than he started his career with Enugu Rangers, a Nigerian division one football team, in 1998 as a youth team player through 2003, and then for the first team from 2003 through 2005.

Edward eventually played for Enugu Rangers 77 times with 18 goals, before joining Swedish side Malmo in 2005, and he has played 78 times for them scoring 22 goals since 2005.

He has represented his country, Nigeria 3 times, making his debut last year.

Comments welcome.

Get him in aslong as its below 2million, also we still need a proven goalscorer at this level, which is the issue!

Thats more like it somebody young and foreign.

Using the Dennis Wise scouting software he seems a more than capable striker who knows where the net is.

But the only obstacle in signing him is the fact we’ll have to pay money for him. The budget is 5m Max and even then theres huge pressure not to spend it and get loans instead after the window closes.

I don’t feel we do need a “proven goalscorer at this level”. I think it would be a good idea to get Harewood back in on loan as cover, but otherwise i don’t think we should be looking at buying any striker.

We have had no trouble whatsoever finding the net this season. The little money we do have availible would be better spent stregthening the core of the squad or saving for the fight we are going to have next season in the Prem. Because we will be there.

    Howay the lads!

Damn. How did i miss that one.

OK, so scrap Marlon. But again, we haven’t had any trouble finding the back of the net. So i think for this position we need not worry.

I think people get too caught up with wanting strikers. The money would be wiser spent elsewhere in the squad.

i dont see why we are going for another tall striker. we dont need him. we’ve got carroll, ranger and ameobi as our target men options. we’ve only got two fast poacher strikers, Lovenkrands ( ocassionaly nolan) that can run onto the through balls by the target men. we need another fast striker like beckford. i think we should bid at most 2.5m cus we need a goal machine. if not we could try and get sturridge on loan from chelsea.

He has quite a good highlights video on newsnow.
I think he is getting a bit more time on the ball where he is but he is getting shots away with very little backlift and without needing to be perfectly set. He seems to be good in the box but also has the pace to get away from defenders. In short he looks like a sane Obafemi martins and seems to have his pace and shooting ability as well.

    O help!

Im a swede and follow the swedish league. Ofere is definately not good enough for Newcastle. The swedish league is getting worse every year and Ofere is not considered one of the leagues better players. Crap player to be honest!

The following’s copied from the article attached to the link. I’m beginning to feel even more optimistic about the rest of the season.

If Ashley delivers, then he will have gone a helluva long way to redeeming himself. Maybe he’s woken up to the realities?

“And he [Hughton] is determined to stay patient for the last six days of the transfer window as he attempts to find three more players to strengthen the Magpies’ push for promotion.

“Hughton is working on his list of potential strikers after learning that Marlon Harewood has fractured his foot and will not be moving anywhere this month.

“But the Newcastle manager claims he is not overly worried and is satisfied that by 5pm next Monday owner Mike Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias will have delivered new faces. ”

agreed, dont think we need a striker… what we need is that creative midfielder.

give our strikers good balls in and they’ll score

certainly not the kind of striker we need – we already have 2 big “target man” strikers. what we need is someone with a bit of pace to feed off Carroll. another striker along the same lines as Lonenkrands.
