Reports Newcastle Have Signed Williamson To Three Year Deal

There is news coming through on Sky Sports News that Newcastle have signed Mike Williamson, from Portsmouth, to a three and a half year deal.

Mike Williamson – signed for Newcastle?

That’s not official, but reports are coming through that Chris Hughton has been seen to SSN , saying that Newcastle have indeed signed the player to a three year contract.

If true, Mike would be the second defender Newcastle have signed in the January transfer window, with Danny Simpson having signed up last week.

We’ll have to wait until it’s reported by the club, on their web-site of course, so we’ll keep a lookout for an announcement shortly.

Some fans don’t think this lad is good enough, but we have a feeling he could turn out to be a decent signing – but we’ll all see. Why do we think that way?  Because we live in perpetual hope.

If he has been signed he may even be in the team for Wednesday night against Crystal Palace, but we’ll not jump the gun on that one.

The first thing is to sign the lad and have it be official. 😀

Comments welcome.

Never seen him play, but Roger Johnson and Dann at Bham show that just because there is no prem experience deosnt mean they are not good enough.

Also the rumoured reason he didnt play at Pompey is because they couldnt afford to pay Watford the extra fees if they did…hopefully this is the reason because Pompey are poor at the back.

We think he might be a decent signing because we live in perpetual hope. What sort of logic is that?
I don’t get excited about getting players who cannot get a game for their team. We are reduced to such players. Its not very good Ed.

Checked with a Hornets mate of mine about his performances last season – he rated him as a player. his comment was that “he’s the kind of centre back you don’t notice, no silly mistakes and good anticipation so very few game saving tackles needed.
Good in the air, weakest part of his game is probably his distribution.”

Probably a decent stand-in for Taylor, as Collo isn’t the biggest centre-half and we will need a presence at the back to get out of this division

He didn’t play for Portsmouth because if he did a clause in his tranfser meant they had to pay Watford more money.

If this deal does go through then we only really need a LB and it looks as though Danny Fox may well be available again and for a lowly £1.5m.

Now there would be good competition for both Enrique and Jonas.

    Surely we can trump Burnley!

For what’s it’s worth. I have always had a virtually useless talent for remembering sightings, viewings of footballers and filing their names away for future “use”. I remember watching a televised Watford game a couple of years ago, a cup game of some sort and thinking, during Newcastle’s pre- Taylor-Collocini centre half shortage, “Now why the heck can the Toon never find guys like that?”. The object of my interest was a big lanky strong centre half. His name was Mike Williamson. Granted it was only one game but there we are. If he has signed, let’s give the big lad a chance.

I’ll take it with a pinch of salt then. I’ve lost count of the number of times Sky Sports News have run a story about us having signed a player only for it to turn out to be false, most memorably in the case of Nicholas Anelka.

He didn’t get a game for Pompey because they couldn’t afford the extra charges a game would cost them. How many more times has it got to be said?

Cant belive some of us are concerned over signing players! WE ARE NOT A CL CLUB ANYMORE!!! we cant expect to be signing superstars anymore & lets not kid ourselves signing so called superstars like Owen is exactly why we are where we are. On to the whole Beckford issue, yes he looks like he has some talent but Leeds claearly wont sell him until they get a bid of prob cash plus player or stone cold £3m, so leading on to my next point lets go to Pompy offer them this £1.8m for nugent and get him. They will bite our hands off as there in the mire! this lad is capable of scoring bucket loads in champ proven with Preston & he can find the net in PL he has done it for Burnley. He clearly didn’t gel with harry redknapp but neither did Bent & a change of club did well for him. this makes business sense. Ed great to have you back first time I’ve posted since the return.

@jezza: hughton was talking about it. Didn’t catch everything he said but it certainly corroborated the story.

    Bring them both in…

    LB: Enrique, Fox
    RB: Simpson, R. Taylor
CB: Coloccini, S. Taylor, McManus, Williamson, Kadar (loan out next season to championship club…)

It’s good that we’re not being taken advantage of and paying over the odds for players but still, what a comedown. Can’t entice the likes of Beckford etc. but Williamson

can’t ever remember seeing him play but hope he does well here, good luck to him and welcome to the Toon.

Agreed MacToon, I hope he turns out to be a rough diamond. With regard to the comments above about having players on FM10, I did read somewhere that Sports Interactive have a better scouting network than most prem teams? I have no idea if its true like.

OK Millertoon, a year or so ago then…time flies when you’re retired and you watch about fifteen games a week…but he certainly stood out that night

I’ve been waiting for skjelbred in for a few seasons now and I doubt we’ll get him seeing as he’s pretty much rosenbergs no 1 midfielder and it’ll require a lot of money and/or a transfer request to bag him. Plus i don’t feel a sense of urgency with this transfer window at all. I think Ashley has discovered the wonders of loan signings and the lack of needing to throw millions around.
