Cameroon’s exited the African Cup of Nations yesterday.
Geremi - ready to move on from Newcastle
Defending champions Egypt reached the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations after beating Cameroon 3-1 in an extra-time quarter-final yesterday.
The scores were tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes, before Egypt scored 2 goals in extra time to go through to the last four.
With Cameroon out of the competition, the way is now clear for Newcastle to move out Geremi, who joined the club from Chelsea in 2007, and has never really settled on Tyneside.
Earlier this month Turkish side Ankaragucu claimed to have completed the signing of the Newcastle midfielder, but it looks like they jumped the gun, and Newcastle apparently had not agreed to the move.
The 31-year-old had been presented as an Ankaragucu player on their official website, and Geremi was said to have signed an 18-month contract.
Hopefully we can finalize that deal, or find some other club for Geremi to move to – his contract runs out on June 30th at Newcastle, and his departure will lessen he Newcastle wage bill, since he’s said to be on around £60K/week at the Tyneside club.
Geremi appeared just 54 times for Newcastle, with 42 starts and 2 goals. He previously played for Real Madrid, Middlesbrough and Chelsea, before moving to Newcastle on July 3rd, 2007, when Sam Allardyce was manager.
He had his best time on Tyneside when Kevin Keegan was at the club in 2008, and was a regular starter on the right wing under Kevin, as Keegan got the best out of the Cameroon International.
