The Daily Mail is reporting this morning that Newcastle are very close to signing Honduras defender Osman Chavez on loan until the end of the season.
Osam Chavez – challenging Landon Donovan in Honduras vs USA game
We don’t have too much information about this player, other than he’s played for Honduras around 25 times, and currently plays for Club Deportivo Platense in Honduras, and he made his debut for the national side on February 6, 2008 in a friendly against Paraguay
We checked Sky Sports transfers and there’s nothing down there about this potential move, but with Jose Enrique out for some weeks, a loan signing like this could make sense for the rest of the season.
Several clubs have been linked with this player, and he’s had trials at Celtic, Tottenham and Sunderland in the last few months, and there are reports that Ipswich and Blackburn are also interested.
We know for sure that Chavez has recently been training with Celtic in the Scottish PL, and yesterday there was news that he had even flown to Newcastle to have a medical, the move was so close.
Chavez missed Honduras 3-1 win over the USA last week with an ankle injury but it has been confirmed he is now fully recovered from that.
Platense president Eduardo Ramos said yesterday:
“Newcastle have been interested in Osman for some time and he is keen to play in England.”
We don’t know if this is a false report, but at least it’s interesting, and it wouldn’t surprise us if we still sign a striker and full-back before next Monday – and of course we already have a bid in for Victor Moses, of Crystal Palace.
Newcastle may surprise us by the number of players they bring in this January – we hope so anyway.
Comments welcome.

Comment #8Enough to get us through this defensive crisis I’d say and a chance to possibly find one or two that are worth keeping or bidding for if we can get up.
