Just who is Leon Best – here’s some information for Newcastle fans.
Leon Best – taking medical right now
The 6’1″ striker is 23 years old and was born in Nottingham and started his career as a youngster at Notts County in 2002, before signing on at Southampton in 2004.
Leon made his professional debut for Southampton against – who else – Newcastle United on his 18th birthday back in 2004.
He was at Southampton for three years until he moved to Coventry in 2007, but while at Southampton he was loaned out to Queens Park Rangers, Sheffield Wednesday, Bournemouth and Yeovil Town.
Leon was a member of Southampton’s youth team that reached the final of the FA Youth Cup in 2005, losing on aggregate to Ipswich Town in the two leg final.
Best then joined Coventry City in 2007 for £650K, and since his contract is up at Coventry in the summer, we doubt if Newcastle will pay much more than this for a more than decent player.
Leon has made a total of 159 first-class appearances so far in his career, and scored 44 goals.
On 3rd October last year, he was named Coca-Cola Championship Player of the Month for September.
He has scored 10 goals this season in 29 appearances for the Sky Blues.
The latest we are hearing about best is that he is at Newcastle’s training ground, has agreed terms on a three and a half year deal, and is undergoing a medical.
It appears it’s a done deal, and he’s the 4th player Newcastle have brought in permanently to the club in this transfer window.
And all four are more than decent players and the club seems to have got good deals on all four players – Simpson, Williamson, Routledge and now Best.
Pity we didn’t get Moses – but that’s how things go sometimes – and we’ll have to get over that, but it’s tough.
