Who Is Leon Best?

Just who is Leon Best – here’s some information for Newcastle fans.

Leon Best – taking medical right now

The 6’1″ striker is 23 years old and was born in Nottingham and started his career as a youngster at Notts County in 2002, before signing on at Southampton in 2004.

Leon made his professional debut for Southampton against – who else – Newcastle United on his 18th birthday back in 2004.

He was at Southampton for three years until he moved to Coventry in 2007,  but while at Southampton he was loaned out to Queens Park Rangers, Sheffield Wednesday, Bournemouth and Yeovil Town.

Leon was a member of Southampton’s youth team that reached the final of the FA Youth Cup in 2005, losing on aggregate to Ipswich Town in the two leg final.

Best then joined Coventry City in 2007 for £650K, and since his contract is up at Coventry in the summer, we doubt if Newcastle will pay much more than this for a more than decent player.

Leon has made a total of 159 first-class appearances so far in his career, and scored 44 goals.

On 3rd October last year, he was named Coca-Cola Championship Player of the Month for September.

He has scored 10 goals this season in 29 appearances for the Sky Blues.

The latest we are hearing about best is that he is at Newcastle’s training ground, has agreed terms on a three and a half year deal, and is undergoing a medical.

It appears it’s a done deal, and he’s the 4th player Newcastle have brought in permanently to the club in this transfer window.

And all four are more than decent players and the club seems to have got good deals on all four players – Simpson, Williamson, Routledge and now Best.

Pity we didn’t get Moses – but that’s how things go sometimes – and we’ll have to get over that, but it’s tough.

Comments welcome.

    Lads,

Im not being funny but no one is giving Houghton the credit he deserves.
What do you want, we’re top of the league, signing players on loan and permanently yet the ‘get out of our club’ chant is still sounding loudly across the terraces to Cashley…

At the end of the day, Houghton has always maintained that the signings he was going to make in January were to secure us promotion from the Championship. Yes there are better players out there for this league maybe, (Moses, Beckford, Kilgallon etc etc) But none of them are proven premiership quality.

I reckon if we all sit tight, keep our top spot through the end of the season, who knows what will happen in the summer??

Not forgetting we’ve more than halved our wage bill!! Geremi’s wages will pay for ALL the signings weve made this window! (or thereabouts)

When we get promotion, were gonna have one of the lowest wage bills in the premier league, then we can start thinking of who we could sell / sign in the summer to keep us there!

Have faith, im sure you’d all admit, the last few months have provided us with the best feelings about our team since the days of Asprillia’s hat-trick against barca!!??

    Keep supporting what weve got…

    Howay the lads!!

I woud rather just have spent 2.5M on Moses than that motley crew.

Nah, I reckon these signings will be proven to be good news. And to RH I think Moses decision was made by the CP moneymen

although his head was turned by premiership football NOW rather than next season….fair play to him, he’s always been at small clubs, so let him rot at another one.

WHo saw the bbc hatchet job on MA then last night ?

He comes with 70% sticker already in place!

We were awful on Saturday and not being able to beat or atleast play well against 10 men highlights our inadequaties.

Top of the league but with no real good performances all season, well maybe 1 or 2 at most but can’t think of them!

    It’s Ashley’s bargain basement club.

If we get Best then I hope he does well here, wouldn’t have been my choice though.

Steve_48, the program made out that Ashley bought the club as a play thing! Ran it like his other business’s but knew nothing about football.

His shirts can be made (in sweat shops) as cheaply as 65p and sold for £7.

We basically knew what was told however proof of the use of sweat shops, £1/ week in wages for 12 hour shift days, won’t go down well in some quarters.

JMC – completely agree with the post and what’s more we were not that attractive to moses as we are a COCA COLA LEAGUE CLUB – no other reason.
Wigan by their own admission sign players by offering them the chance to progress on the premier league stage until one of the big four come in for them – at which point they promise not to stand in their way.

    to wash?

Can’t see this guy as our 1st or 2nd choice striker and would be a real shame for Ranger to miss out on possible playing time.

We still need some creativity in midfield.

If Moses is really as good as warnock reckons why did none of the big boys come in for him? £2.5 mill is pocket change to a top 6 premier team. Best has scored 10 goals this season in a poor team, will have cost very little & won’t be on big money, If he helps get us up thats all that matters at the moment, lets worry about how we cope if we get promoted.

Leon Best will suit us and not too bad a signing.
    – He’s a powerful and pacey journeyman forward with a dodgy first touch and no creativity – think of Homer but with a bit more enthusiasm. Should fit in seamlessly with the tactical scheme of things at SJP, if that’s not being too harsh.

I think Moses was the one we really needed but… ( by the way, so much for the proposed excuse that Moses would rather stay at home with his foster family and move over to West Ham – not sure where that tosh came from).

why does it make no sense
    we need a striker
    Beckford is a striker
    Best aint signed yet

I wonder if Hughton was given an ultimatum by Ashley – Moses OR Beckford, not both!

Why 2.3 for 25 year old Beckford whose contract is almost up and not 2,5 for Moses at just 19 and on cheaper wages (no doubt).
    Makes little sense.
