That takes our youngsters into the last eight of the FA Youth Cup this season.
Hughton knows all about the West Ham Youth system which has produced players of the caliber of Bobby Moore, Martin Peters, Geoff Hurst, Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole and Jermain Defoe.
So it was a great win for our Under-18s last night, in fact it was a fantastic win for our boys.
We reported on the game last night, and today Chris Hughton has hailed his young guns:
“I’m delighted – it’s an excellent achievement to see off a side of West Ham’s caliber in the way they have.”
“West Ham have one of the finest youth policies in football.” “And to be in the next round at this stage is great for us.”
“West Ham’s Academy coach Tony Carr is the most experienced of them all, so it’s a massive result for us.”
Newcastle have already beaten Doncaster Rovers and Reading in the Youth Cup this season, and will now host a quarter-final tie at St James’ Park against Crystal Palace or Hull City on, February 13th – a week on Saturday.
Here is our report of the game from last night, with two great goals from Phil Airey and Brad Inman.
