I’m Very Happy To Be Given Opportunity At Newcastle

There is a decent interview with new boy Leon Best today in the Newcastle Journal.

Leon Best – makes debut tonight

Chris Hughton has deliberately kept the famous number nine Newcastle shirt available, and he wants our current strikers (5 of them) to fight it out as to who wins the shirt for next season.

Leon, who is expected to make his debut tonight against Cardiff City, talked to the Journal this morning:

“I have been talked about as a player with potential ever since I made my debut at Southampton, but you can not be a player of potential your whole career.”

“There has to be a stage where you move on to the next level and I feel I have the perfect platform to do that with Newcastle.”

“I am just very thankful to be given the opportunity here because I feel everything is coming together for me.”

“I received a good grounding at Southampton, but every experience I have had in football has led me to this point.”
Everything feels like the next step and everything feels right. I have always wanted to be at a club like this.”

“I made my debut at 18 which was quite young, but the season after that Southampton were relegated and I went out on loan to a few places.”

“I have never taken anything for granted and I have certainly never felt as though I have made it.”

“You have made it when you are a Wayne Rooney or when you are one of the top goalscorers in the Premiership.”

“That is what I am striving to achieve, to be in a position like that, but at the minute I am not there.”

“What I have is a move to club which gives me the chance to make it.”  “I am in a position and a club where I can show people what I am made of.”

“Andy Cole was a Nottingham boy and he came here and scored a lot of goals.”

“I just want to be as successful as I can, and the aim now is to score the goals which get us back into the Premier League.”

“This is a Premier League club, everything about it is a Premier League club, the stadium, the fans, everything.”

Well,  we may be a Premier League club next season, and that’s the club’s  number one goal this season.

It will be good to see how Leon plays like tonight, and whether his undoubted speed can make a difference, and make Newcastle more of a threat to opposing sides.

We weren’t really much of a threat at all last week against Leicester City, even when they were down to 10 men.

And Best has talked about his wait in the January transfer window:

“I had heard a whisper at the start of the window, but there were a lot of whispers. I was just waiting thinking ‘is this going to happen, please let it happen’.”

“There was a lot of talk, as there always is in the transfer window, but eventually it became solid and that was that. I flew up and got it done as quickly as possible.”

“I was spending most of my time reading about Newcastle being interested in this player and that player and I did begin to think it wouldn’t happen. I needed that bit of luck and I got it.”

“The other moves fell through for one reason or another and I now I have this wonderful chance at Newcastle.”

We’ll all get our first look at Leon tonight in a black and white shirt, and wouldn’t it be great if he score a goal or two.

Certainly somebody needs to score a goal or two.

As the only unknown among our strikers, he is the most likely to get the shirt… if any of them do. Possibly Loverboy?

My guess is that it’ll be a new striker coming in during the summer that gets it. Probably foreign.

But I’m really, really hoping to be proven wrong!

Good stuff in the interview; glad he realises what a massive chance he’s got here. If he’s put 10 in with the awful service he was getting in his last club, I’m hoping with the likes of Guthrie, Jonas, Routledge and all our “Big Lad” target men to help he should clean up.

All the best to him. Put the effort and spirit in, lad and you’ll be welcome at St James’s.

I think St James is exactly the kind of stage that Best will relish and up his game to the next level. Have seen him score some good goals at this level although he has never really found any consistancy but probably because Coventry aren’t exactly the most consistant team in the league. Good luck to him and the rest of the team tonight, i hope Best will show-up Chopra after all his talk to the press this week.

Well he is talking the talk but can he walk the walk?

All we ask from our lads is commitment and effort for 90mins, you give us that week in week out and you will do fine because we will all be behind you.

Good Luck Leon, hopefully you can emulate Andy Cole.

If he can be half as good as Andy Cole he’ll be a class signing! He just needs to make sure he relaxes tonight and does the business. If he feels too much pressure he’ll crack just like so many have done for our club.
All the Best to him… pardon the pun!
Come on son, for the lads!
