Maybe the player signed in January, who has been the most impressive so far, is center-back Mike Williamson, signed for about £1M from Portsmouth.
Mike Williamson – great form so far for the former Portsmouth player
When the 26 year-old signed, one of the things that we were concerned about, was that Mike had never once appeared for the Portsmouth first team,. since signing for them last September 1st from Watford.
Now it could have been that Portsmouth would have owed his former club Watford, extra money based on appearances, and maybe his debut would have cost the Portsmouth side, who seem so short of money these days, and seemingly are still near financial collapse.
There’s no way to know why he never played at Portsmouth, but we did hear that when Newcastle came calling, Mike, who was a Newcastle target in the summer, couldn’t get up to Newcastle fast enough.
Before he signed he did say he wanted to capture a first team starting position, and his 3 games so far for the club have been almost flawless performances, and he certainly looks the part already – although it’s still very early in his Newcastle career.
The first goal conceded with Mike in the side, was the last minute goal by Cardiff City last Friday night.
Chris Hughton is also seemingly delighted with the form of his new center-back, and Mike has also shown significant leadership on the field.
Chris said today:
“I’m delighted with Mike,” “To come and settle straight in and do as well as he has done has been very pleasing.”
“When we spoke to him about coming here he was very excited at the prospect of playing competitive football again.”
“It was a very good opportunity and he wants to make the most of it.” “Certainly, during his early performances he has done that and long may it continue.”
We need another strong performance from Mike at Derby County tonight – and that game is due to start in about 90 minutes from the time of writing.
It would appear that his central partner tonight will again be another new boy Fitz Hall, on loan until the end of the season from QPR.
A strong defensive performance will auger well for a Newcastle win tonight, which is what we all want to see,
