Andy Carroll came to the rescue of Newcastle United on Saturday with a late goal, after Newcastle had been completely dominated by an excellent Swansea City side.
Andy Carroll – good cross from Leon
Andy Carroll said this morning:
“The fans stuck with us and that goal was for them.”
“It was a long way to come for the fans and we didn’t play great. We would have been devastated not to get a result for them so I was delighted to get that goal.”
“You could see by the celebrations of the players and the fans how much of a relief it was and I think we deserved it after battling hard.”
The goal took Carroll’s total goals for the season to 9, and if can become a regular scorer, than it looks like he could well develop into a top class striker.
And Andy was quick to point out it was a great cross from his strike partner and new-boy Leon Best, that made the goal possible.
“Leon picked me out at the back post and he knows exactly what I want,”
“He floated it over perfectly and all I could do was score.” “It had been a tough game because I didn’t get a lot of the ball.”
“They dominated the whole game really and I was lucky to get that one chance and one goal.”
“But I got what I wanted and we’re happy to take the point that puts us back top.”
The game on Saturday showed that our central midfield is simply not good enough, and that needs to be strengthened.
There’s still time to bring in a midfield play-maker on loan, who would make all the difference to our midfield.
But perhaps Joey Barton can do a job for us when he finally returns from his foot injury – hopefully in a couple of weeks.
