Newcastle vs Coventry – Match Preview

16 games still to go and Newcastle are in action tonight at St. James Park against Coventry City.

We were very poor in our last game on Saturday, but in Newcastle’s inconsistent season, we usually follow a bad performance with a good one, so we have to hope the lads will be on form tonight.

Certainly, home games will be important for the rest of the season and 3 point in every single game has to be the target.

Newcastle packed the midfield on Saturday, and tried to play a holding game, but Swansea were far the better side.

But tonight Chris will field an attacking 4-4-2 formation and Jonas Gutierrez on the left wing is expected to be back, after being held back on Saturday because of a muscle injury.

Shola Ameobi, Steven Taylor, Joey Barton and Nicky Butt are still not available through injury.

We also would like to see a more attacking midfield  in the middle tonight, and would hope that Danny Guthrie gets a start tonight, alongside Alan Smith, the captain.

At the back we would half expect Mike Willaimson to come back in place f Fitz Hall, who has started the last 3 games.

Up front, we expect Leon Best to be preferred in a starting position to Danish striker Peter Lovenkrands, with Peter being introduced at some point during the game.

This is the side that we expect Chris Hughton to start tonight:

Harper
Simpson Coloccini Williamson van Aanholt
Routledge Guthrie Smith (c) Gutierrez
Carroll Best
Subs: Krul Hall Kadar Taylor (R) Lovenkrands Pancrate Ranger

And yes, we have left Kevin Nolan out of the squad so he can have a well earned rest.

Leon Best hasn’t exactly started his Newcastle career on fire, but it would be good if Leon can get his first goal against his former club.

What is clear is that Newcastle must attack, and the crowd will expect nothing less.

Howay The Lads!!

We are top of the league (theoretically at least) – is that not what we want??

I dont care if we win 10-0 or 1-0, as 3 points is 3 points.

Will all the people who are complaining at the defensive, unentertaining style that we play with on most days still be conplaining if we win teh league by 10 points because of the boring style of play? I think not.

So, should we try and be Brasil at this crusial point of the season to appease the conplainers, or should we continue with what we are best at – that is to say grinding out boring 3-pointers 1-0?

I really dont care how we win, so long as we do win. Its about cutting our cloth accordingly – we have the players we have until the summer, fact (barring loans which are unlikely). So, lets get behind the team and get these points we need.

We must get promoted this season, otherwise the futher will be bleak. Therefore, we must get the points in any way we can – wheather by playing drab football or otherwise.

Does anyone disagree with my logic? Baring in mind I am not worrying about next season if we do secure promtion. That will be a challenge to tackle during the summer.

tdt – we are suppose to have the best footballers in this division so why do we have to except drap football ? , i expect to be entertained & i expect us to win the title – dont give me that bullshit about grinding out 3 points in every game.

there drab football and there is 1 shot on target in 90 mins.

Sometimes our performances are worse than awful. Saying this, i agree, we dont have to win 6-0 every game, even the best clubs lose matches and have bad days….so far our season has been very smooth in my opinion. On track for PL football.

Im not to sure about Leon Best, we could not buy beckford or moses, so it seems we splashed out too much money on a third option, who ive not seen much of. I hope he prooves me wrong.

Roy Cropper – you evidently disagree, but I’d rather win the title with 30 boring wins and a hand full of draws than try to do something we cant and therfore blow it – i.e the Derby match.

We have the best team in the league, most likely, but the vast majority of our good players are defensive: harper, Krul, Forster, Taylor, collo, enrique, smith, Willianson and Kadar. The exceptions to this are Jonas, Routledge, Nolan, Ranger and Lovenkrands.

Get real – we are never going to be Brasil-esque, but was can be like Chelsea, in that we can grind out points to be successful and some times smash the opposition – like we did to Cardiff.

Our performances are worse that 3 months ago (or so), we have the best squad in the CCC but other teams play better than us.

tdt, fyi we’ll end up in the playoffs if we keep playing the way we are.

I expect a win tonight and hopefully some entertaining football to watch, afterall it wasn’t that long ago we over-run a top CCC team and scored 5 goals.

FYI MacToon – we have an easier run in than the last 2 games. Our home form is very good, the best in the league in fact.

The away games to Derby (bogey team), Swansea (in-form play-off position team), Leicester (in-form play-off position team) and West Brom (currently top of the league) can hardly to said to be easy games.

The form that matter come May is the season’s form, not the last 5 0r 8 games.

Hopefully CH has learned some valuable lessons since mid-December and can get us back to winning ways tonight.

why have we lost a 12 point lead ? – because the lesser teams have sussed out our crap & all to often frightened to attack style of football.

grind out results – my arse !

Trying to play a style we cannot play consistently, like you are suggesting we do, got us relegated (along with relying on lazy overpaid “stars”).

However, we are top of the league (theoretically) because we have change our style to adapt to this league.

You can argue as must as you like, but you cant change the facts.

We would not of had that 12 point lead if we didnt grind out results. We have one good game against Cardiff and now we must play like Keegan would. Well that didnt work at Derby did it? However I do believe we must play 442 at home with two wingers, not necessary away from home though – as I’d play 451 with two wingers away.

i agree, sometimes we are so bad it hurts. The Swansea game was probably the worst ive seen all season, but look at teams like m’bro, cmon, you gotta give NUFC some credit, winning every match flawlessly is not common in football and i did not expect it at the start of the season either.

Even Reading beat Liverpool and they are playing some of the worst football ive seen in the Championship. Just be patient, we will win this league . (even though after every match we lose i rant about how west brom will win cus we are terrible)

tdt, is asking the team to string 5 passes together asking too much………

The annoying thing is I’ve seen this team play well, not many times this season granted but there is no consistency.

You say we have the best team in the CCC, WE DON’T, we have the best squad by a million miles but our team play most of the time is pianful to watch.

    Right this is it lads,

West Brom only managed a draw at Cardiff and with now have half their squad injured. Forest won again at home but their away form has hit a brick wall of late with 3 losses. Things are looking up.

Non of this matters though really because it is up to US not them. 6 points in our next two home games will put us back in the hot seat for promotion and I really think we can do it starting tonight by bombing Coventry.

I hope so because I will be there. 😉

Lets get another win of Cardiff proportions and stop the Baggies sneeking past on GD aswell. 🙂

It’s not winning with crap football that’s the problem, it’s the fact we no longer seem capable of 3 points at all. Instead, we are content to play out useless draws (if we are lucky) even when faced with 10 men Leicester (or useless Bristol City). A fact which has sent us spiralling down from a 12 point cushion straight into the chasing pack.

And tdt, we are no longer top of the league, theoretically or otherwise. In a months time we’ll be out of the top two places on current form but no-one seems to have noticed the decline. We are top of the league because of what happened in the first 4 months of the season, the last two months have been an unmitigated disaster.

Wake up, we’ve been found out!! Heads out of the sand time, I suggest, before it IS too late ’cause if we miss promotion this season and lose the parachute payments we could still very easily “do a Leeds” based on recent performances.

Am reading abt NUFC. Jst like I dont know anything abt but I have realised that we need stability and build a team. he last time we built teams was in the years of Arthur Cox, KK and The late Sir. Bobby and to look at we made teams out of no bodies jst players who wanted to play for NUFC. Jst give CH and MA time to build his team CH is a very bright man and careful at what he does. and not forgetting MA is a billionare who started making money at 16.

I have jst read that and I think we are on the right track for the no more star signings we have players to teach the young and we are setting our selves slowly by slowly.

We have a manager who isnt that demanding and can listen. Listening is a good thing it takes u places that is what patience does. Look at Arsenal no trophies though but they will always go to Champs league.

For the first time I see hope.

It looks like we have the set scouting team and the Academy team.

All we need is a first team comprising of Good coaches who wld love to be at NUFC. I can bring back Roeder and Carver.

That wld be a good team of CH, CC, Roeder and Carver.

With Jonas and Routleedge on hopefully we will play some good football like we did against Cardiff.

Too many times this season we have put half arsed passes up to Carroll whos surrounded and expected him to shrug off two hardened championship defenders and produce something like against Swansea.

We need Guthrie in the middle definitely, the game changed against Swansea when tucked inside in the last 15 minutes. Seeing as we do just lump it forward we should play Best over Lovenkrands as he will battle more. However if we do play like we should be able to do then Lovenkrands ahead of Best every time.
