Newcastle Wing Their Way To Big Win

It was a good display by Newcastle United last night and a great result.

Wayne Routledge – good display and great goal

And the way to victory was through the wide men, with both Gutierrez and new-boy Routledge having good games on the flanks.

And Chris Hughton was very pleased with the display, which put Newcastle 3 points clear at the top of the Championship.

“I think what we have is him and Jonas in wide areas who are able to express themselves,”   “It’s certainly a good period at St James’ Park at the moment.”

“The team that we’ve played here has been a little bit more offensive with Danny and Kevin in the middle of the park and you hope you can capitalise on that.”

“It was a smashing goal. What Wayne has is old-fashioned wing play and you look to him to provide crosses into the box.”

“They like old fashioned wingers at St James’ Park and that’s what he is. We’ve got him at a good age. He has been in and out of big clubs but we hope we’ve got him at a good time and we can develop his game further.”

Wayne has done well since he arrived on Tyneside, and he’s an emotional player.

We say that because he can be lifted by Newcastle terrific crowd, and he’s already had some good games at home.

Last night,  not only was he a provider (he was brought down for the penalty, after a great run, and Lovenkrands converted nicely), but he also knocked in the best goal of the game on 37 minutes with a wonderful shot from 20 yards that he rifled in.

That came just two minutes after Coventry had taken the lead, and it set Newcastle up well.

Newcastle were the much better side in the second half, and further goals from Carroll (his 10th), Lovenkrands (his 9th) and Ryan Taylor (his 3rd) right at the end,  set the scene for our next game at home against Preston on Saturday.

We cannot get carried a way, and the lads have to get ready for that game, where another 3 points will be important.

After Saturday the team has a rare week off before they visit Watford, where the spotlight will again be on the side’s away form, which has hardly been good enough of late.

But next up are Preston and another 3 points would be just what the doctor ordered.

Howay The Lads!!

Since comments are always welcome on this blog 😀 , i suppose i better comment 😉

Last nights performance from what i’ve heard was brilliant, Coventry started the better team but Newcastle defended well, my mate who was at the match said the Williamson- Coloccini partnership is magnificentand Mike is 10 times better than Fitz Hall. Coventry’s goal was completely against the run of play and from then 0n it was plane sailing!

We cant go into every game expecting to win by three or four goals but it is nice to see the goals coming from different players so it is certainly possible. It sounded like Carroll could have bagged another with a bit of luck and I cant wait to see the highlights. We need to start going into games as though we have -1 goals, as apart from Derby, we have been very very good at coming back after being down. We dont concede that many but with taylor out and collo out for a bit it was not surprising that we should let some through.

Listened to the game on the radio last night and by the sounds of things Guthrie had a wonder game which is great to hear considering we have been lacking somewhat in the centre of the park.

Rumors today that we are fighting with westbrom to sign Koumas on loan from Wigan. Can’t see that happening if Barton really is only a couple of weeks away and Guthrie now playing well.

Guthrie has always been a cracking player in the CENTRAL MIDFIELD role, and many Liverpool fans I know where absolutely gutted he was allowed to go as they reckoned he was a player with top qualities and could potentially fill the void left from Gerrard when he retires/is sold (which I incidently think they should sell him this summer whilst they can still get a good price… but that’s not a debate for here!).

People have been saying oh he is a waste of space but playing him on the wing is like playing McLovin in goal (maybe thats a bit extreme!)… Guthrie is a good player with alot of potential in him and I can see him and Barton being a cracking CM partnership next season, assuming Barton doesn’t go and do something stupid again!

    Thoughts?

Tom – spot on about Guthrie; but I do worry about Barton being more of a liability despite his supposed pedigree, and think we’d be best shuffling him out of the club at the first opportunity.

good game last night. a very tight first half but totally dominant in the second.

Jonas was outstanding, easily his best game in a black and white shirt. had the full back in bits.

i have also been very critical of nolan recentely but to be fair he was very good last night. seems to play well when partnered with guthrie, same as the cardiff match. i think an unchanged side against preston, cant see any reason why it wont be. its so nice to see us playing with 2 proper wingers. makes a hige difference im sure you all agree?

no we havent played well away from home, but we have picked up points which is the main thing. apart from the odd game we have been solid on the road and that has stood us well
