Hughton Wasn’t Sure What To Expect In Championship

Chris Hughton has given a long interview in the Newcastle Journal this morning and he surprisingly says he didn’t know exactly what to expect in the Championship, before the season started.

Chris Hughton – not sure what to expect in Championship

Because the squad was so weak mentally last season, we had our doubts about whether Newcastle could maintain their winning ways of August, when the lads won five of six games, and it was only the very first game at WBA which they drew, after being behind in the first half.

And it seems like both Chris and the players didn’t have much of a clue either of how the team would do this season.

And Remember the experts were predicting the side would go straight down to Division One and compared Newcastle to the Leeds United side who ended up in Division Two – or the fourth division of English Football before coming back last year.

Chris continued:

“The truth is that, at the start of the season, I didn’t really know what would happen,” “There were blips in pre-season, but I was never overly-concerned.”

“I didn’t really know what would happen in the Championship, and the only way to find out was to play the first two or three games and see.”

“From a fairly early stage, it became apparent we had enough character and quality to have a real good go.”

Most of the Newcastle fans also were not sure how the lads would do, with some agreeing with the pundits that we would go straight down to Division One.

It reflects so well on Hughton and the players that once the lads got their feet on the ground in August, and did so well, they have managed to essentially stay on top of the Championship almost the whole season so far.

That shows guts, determination and not a little bit of skill – and that’s one reason we are so proud of the lads this season – so far.

Howay The Lads!!

I’m not going to celebrate until we secure 2nd place, then and only then can I relax!

Ed, You ae an early bird, too. I wonder how many know you are doing this from the USA and it is only 6 AM here in North Carolina?

This has been an interesting season to me because CH has been able to keep the quality of his roster playing to their ability. It could have been a depressed squad, with egos bruised, stumbling around, not getting their composure again until it was too late to get back up to the PL. Many another manager would have made a hash of the season trying to impose their will on the squad, rather than working with the talent and letting the players excel on the pitch. But the quality has shown through, with the NUFC being able to do enough to show other sides that they have the extra step, extra skill and experience to be in the right place at the right time to win, ugly or otherwise.

    Hi Beeguy,
Do you mind if I ask, are you a born and bred member of the Toon Army or are you an adoptee?? To be at this blog at six in the morning shows a distinct need for a fix.

Unless of course you are just whiling away the nightshift hours 🙂

I thought it was just the likes me who was Byker born and bred that was cursed with the need to read all things black and white, and I don’t mean newsprint. 🙂

Ed has already declared his madness to the world by running this blog which it has to be in the running for the best there is, I cannot praise you highly enough in that respect Ed, exceptional job, exceptional job.

I only asked the fist question as I do have a passing interest in the makeup of this crazy nation that goes under the banner of the Toon Army, and those that have to carry out their passion from a distance have to be admired.

Back to the posting to be honest I do not think anyone can be sure what to expect when they drop into the fizzy, except to battle on at least two fronts, one psychological and the other physical outside of that it was new to all.
