Newcastle 6 Barnsley 1 – Magpies Hammer Tykes – 8 Points Clear

Newcastle pulled of a magnificent 6-1 win at home today against  Barnsley, after the Tyke’s goalkeeper Luke Steele was sent off on 42 minutes, for bringing down Peter Lovenkrands in the penalty area.

Peter put home the penalty with his usual aplomb to put Newcastle ahead  just before half time, and indeed Newcastle were 1-0 up at the break.

In the second half Newcastle completely over-ran the Tykes, with further goals coming from Lovenkrands – his 12th of the season, Guthrie, Gutierrez, Guthrie again, and then captain Kevin Nolan hit his 13th goal of the season to make it 6-0.

Nolan leads Lovenkrands oin the goals trail with 13 to Peter’s 12, and 10 of Lovenkrands goals have come this year. 😀

We hope the Denmark selectors are noticing that Peter is really scoring some goals for Newcastle this year, and looks razor sharp.

The only disappointment was after getting 6-0 up, a misunderstanding between Simpson and Collocini let in Daniel Bogdanovic on 83 minutes and for a second week in a row Newcastle conceded a late goal and didn’t get the clean sheet.

But Newcastle’s play in the second half exploited Barnsley’s 10 men, and it’s not always easy to play against 10 men, but Newcastle’s wing play proved decisive this afternoon.

And in the other results QPR, under new manager Neil Warnock produces a great result in beating WBA 3-1, and it was only an injury time goal from Luke Chambers that gave Nottingham Forest all 3 points against Swansea.

That Forest win puts them into second place,  8 points behind the Magpies, with WBA another point behind in 3rd place.

So Newcastle are now 8 points clear at the top of the Championship with 72 points and 21 wins in their 34 games and with a game in hand over second placed Nottingham Forest.

The goal difference is now 40, and things in the Newcastle garden look very rosy indeed this Saturday evening.

Next up is an away game at Middlesbrough next week and we cannot have any let-downs, and that game should provide a good test.

But we still cannot get too carried away, not yet in any case.

This afternoon was a great attacking performance from the Newcastle side.

Howay The Lads!!

Being greedy I would say the Nottingham Forest 90th minute winner was of great annoyance but still a very good result!

You talking about Beefeater, Toon-Army I think he is down the pub ripping his calculations up cos they were pretty poor before our latest run and now they are a waste of his and out time lol.

Very annoying Tom but not to worry it is well within our own hands.

Statistics-wise, I don’t think penalties count as shots on target. Though I’d be impressed if our other 5 shots on target had also finished with goals!
