Newcastle will again be without captain Alan Smith for the game against Scunthorpe United tomorrow night.
Alan Smith – still struggling to be fit
The 29-year-old former Leeds and Manchester United player has already missed the last two games with an ankle knock picked up in training before the 6-1 beating of Barnsley.
And Chris Hughton has confirmed this morning that the Scunthorpe game will come to early for his impressive midfielder:
“Smudge won’t be available,” “The game will come too soon for him.”
“We’ll continue to assess him over the next couple of days, however, and see where we are with regards Bristol City at the weekend.”
Fabricio Coloccini is a doubt for tomorrow night, and a final decision will be made on the Argentine just before the game.
But both Wayne Routledge and Jose Enrique are fit to start the game, and we also understand that Danny Simpson picked up a knock on Saturday, but since Chris has said nothing about that, we have to hope that Danny will be OK for the game.
Joey Barton is not available but will play at Hartlepool United tonight in a run-out for the Reserves.
Joey could be pushing for a squad position for the game at Bristol City on Saturday.
Williamson and Steven Taylor are both out for about 4 weeks but surely Mike can return earlier than that.
Couldn’t Mike play with a splint on his hand in a couple of weeks – but maybe that’s just too risky. But the lad’s temperament is so strong that may still happen.
And there seems no sign of injury prone Shola Ameobi returning anytime soon, from his hamstring injury.
The last time Shola played for the first team was the 3-0 defeat at Derby on 13th February, when he came on as a 67th minute substitute.
It’s interesting that Ameobi failed an Ipswich medical almost 20 months ago because of hamstring problems, so we wonder if this injury has reared up again, and it has to be a future worry for the local lad.
