Five More Wins And Newcastle Promoted

What became clear after last night’s rather easy 3-0 win over Scunthorpe United was that 5 more wins and Newcastle get automatic promotion.

Chris Hughton with Mike Ashley and the players

Chris was told that it looked like another 15 points and they would be ahead of Nottingham Forest, even if Forest won all their remaining 9 games, and Chris said:

“I didn’t even know it was five more wins,”

“I think that the most important thing is we keep winning football matches. I was delighted with the application today – we’re a side playing very well at home at the moment.”

“We need to take that confidence into every game. The only thing that can bring us back down to earth is that we’ve got two tough away games coming up.”

“It’s a very healthy lead – it’s a wonderful position that we’ve worked hard to put ourselves into. We always knew that the most important gap was going to be between us and the third place team.”

“I don’t see it being a problem with the playing staff we’ve got. I don’t see it being a difficulty bringing them back down to earth.”

“It’s understandable that people outside the club will think that we’re promoted. But we won’t allow that.”

Of course we certainly don’t want the players to take their foot off the accelerator, but we’re sure Chris Hughton will not let that happen.

Chris hasn’t so far this season, and in any case, players like Nolan, Smith, Harper and others will not let that happen either.

The lads were great last night and showed the fight, determination and spirit needed for promotion.

Next up is a game at Bristol City on Saturday, and another 3 points is the target in that game too.

Comments welcome.

It sounded like a good game over the radio, by the sounds of it we should have been at least 8-0 by HT but we weren’t, instead 3-0 after FT is still a good result 🙂

Seems teh lads are putting in a good stint at home, 5 games on the trot we’ce scored 3 or more goals, just hope we can do that for the rest of the games home & away, because then we’ll start dancing in the streets at Champions of the last Fizzy pop league.. lol

    HWTL, well done boys 🙂

3 points against Bristol City shouldn’t be a problem, Ed. They’ve only won two of their last twelve games, and they’ve just lost their manager!

I think 3 wins will probably suffice.

    Looking at http://www.football-league.co.uk/page/DivisionalLeagueTable/0,,10794~20047,00.html

in only 2 of the last 7 seasons have the 3rd place team reached 84 / 85 points. Most years they struggle to reach 80

I think it’s only 4 more wins (as long as we beat forest) – that will give us 24 points. If forest lose to us, the most points they could get would be 24 and our goal difference is far better. 4 more wins, real nice!
