Harper One Clean Sheet Short Of New Newcastle Record

Czech goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek is the Newcastle goalkeeper who holds the club’s clean-sheet record of 18.

Steve Harper – one clean sheet from the new Newcastle record

But Newcastle so far this season have 18 clean sheets in the Championship and another clean sheet in any of Newcastle’s last 10 games will give Steve Harper the new record.

Not a bad record for Steve’s first full season as Newcastle’s number one.

And Pavel, at the end of the 1992-2993 season, when Newcastle were last promoted to the Premiership, wore that famous T shirt that announced “Pavel Is A Geordie”

Steve Harper has talked about Pav the Geordie and the clean-sheet record today:

“I couldn’t think of anyone better than Pav to knock off the record because he was fantastic to me when I was a young kid here,”

“He was here last week when we had a Slovakian trialist that he came in with and I jokingly said if we get promoted by the Ipswich game  I will wear a ‘Pavel is a Geordie’ T-shirt.”

“His face lit up and he said he would come back for it so he might be putting me under pressure to do that. I think the world of Pav.”

“We had a lot of 1-0 wins this season but we have really started firing in the last 10 or 12 games and started scoring a lot of goals when the clean sheets have dried up a bit.”

“It is probably the first time since I came to Newcastle that I have heard a defence being consistently praised,” “I don’t know if that is to do with dropping down a division or not, but this is a very tough league. I keep ticking the games off but there still seems to be a load left.”

Clean sheets are not just dependent on the goalkeeper of course, but on having a strong defense, and having every single player do their jobs in defense, such as from dead ball situations.

For example how many times this season has Andy Carroll headed the ball clear in defense?

Having said that Steve has had a great season, and has been one of the safest goalkeepers around.

Steve continued:

“It would be unfair if I was to take all the credit,” “If my name goes there then great, but I don’t want it to go unrecognised what a fantastic team effort it has been in the 36 games so far.”

“To keep a clean sheet every other game is testament to a good, solid unit which we have proved ourselves to be this season. It is pleasing to hear that Wednesday was our 18th clean sheet and hopefully we can get several more in the last 10 games and get promoted.”

“We will all be proud if we create a new record. I know it sounds boring to say we score goals as a team and defend as a team but we do.”

“Goalkeepers tend to get a lot of credit when you keep a clean sheet. But you look at Steven Taylor earlier this season and he was very impressive, (Fabricio) Coloccini has been outstanding and José Enrique and Patrick van Aaanholt when he came in.”

“Fitz Hall was outstanding against Scunthorpe, Danny Simpson has done well and then there are the midfield lads. When we lose the ball we get behind it and are hard to score against.”

It would be great to get another clean sheet today, and it seems that the defense Newcastle have this season could form the basis of a more than decent team in the Premiership next season.

We’re just hoping that turns out to be true.

Off the topic but would like to get ROBBIE KEANE in next year if we could get him at a decent price.
He is a tried and trusted PL striker.
His wages would probably stand in the way though.
He would leave Spurs i`m sure as he seems to be being pushed out and out of favour

How about ‘Steve Harper is a Gent!’ T-Shirt, or maybe we’ll all wear ‘Steve Harper is a Geordie’ T-Shirts for that one. Well done. Top banana.

Things are getting exciting now!! Just looking to next season for a moment.

The best we can hope for next season if we’re promoted is 9th position – and that if we spend a few quid as well.

We are miles off the top – usual top 4, Man city, spuds, everton, villa all at least 50-100 million quid ahead of us in todays market – and thats if players WANT to come to us. So it may be we rely on what we have with a few smart additions and BUILD a team over time, which will take a few seasons, and a lot of what some fans don’t have – patience!!

The way I see what we have and what we need…..

    Harper/Krul

    Simpson/R Taylor
    S Taylor/Williamson
    Collo/Kadar
    Enrique/XXXX

    Routledge/BACKUP
    KEY MAN – CREATIVE CM/Barton/Nolan
    Guthrie/Smith
    Jonas/BACKUP

    CREATIVE STRIKER/L’Krands
    PROVEN GOAL SCORER or Carroll/Ranger

Anyone agree or wish to suggest changes? views welcome…

sahil- I am guessing means that we need to find cover/competition for Jonas and Routledge. I still feel although Simpson has been very committed and that his attitude is exactly what we want from the players at our club, we should be looking to get a stronger, more experienced Premiership standard right-back, plus that would give someone for Danny to compete with (although placing Stevie T there is always a possibility).

    3-0 to the mags tonight!!
    HWTL!

Charlietoon – give it a rest mate. Do you really think that anyone on this blog gives a toss about Sydney FC? I bet you’ll still be farting about trying to find a stream for for the Toon game on the iraq goals website, while the rest of us will be happily watching it on cable tv 🙂

Jackdnufc – your spot on – we need backup for these two. If a player is on left it means he’s first choice. We also need comp for Jose.

HWTL!!!!!!!! Was at the Barnsley match we played amazing so here’s looking for another great performance away from home.
