The important clean sheet at Doncaster on Tuesday night was Newcastle’s 19th of the season in the league, and means that Harper and the rest of the lads have broken the record set by Newcastle back in 1993 by Kevin Keegan’s team.
Steve Harper – breaks record in first full season as number one
Steve takes the most credit as the goalkeeper but it’s really the whole team that takes the accolades because it’s all of the lads who contribute to defense.
Kevin Keegan was manager back then and they won the Championship with 96 points and it’s going to be close as to whether the lads can beat that total number of points.
With 8 games left this season, the team is currently on 80 points so 2 points a game will equal that total of 96 points – but we’ll have to wait and see on that one.
Steve talked about the new record:
“It is nice we have broken the record. My name might go in the record books but it is a real team effort.”
“It is about everybody who goes out on to the pitch, as well as the staff who put so much work in behind the scenes to get us organised.”
“It does give us a lot of satisfaction because this is a tough league, especially away from home. As a team we have beaten the record and hopefully we can extend it before the rest of the season.”
“The poor defence thing has been thrown at Newcastle for years, so it is nice to gain some recognition this season.”
It looks like we’ll soon have to stop criticizing Newcastle defense which has been leaky to say the least over the last 15 years or so.
And with players like Tamas Kadar coming through the ranks we look to be set for a solid defense in the years to come.
