Four Positions Newcastle Must Strengthen This Summer

It seems likely that Newcastle will get promoted this season unless some unforeseen catastrophe occurs.

Chris Hughton – already has plans for the summer

And if that happens then Chris Hughton will need to strengthen the squad and from what we’ve seen Newcastle are already in top gear with their scouting activities, with chief scout Graham Carr leading the way.

Newcastle have already strengthened the squad this season with four decent players being drafted in – Mike Williamson, Wayne Routledge, Danny Simpson and Leon Best.

Of those four only Leon Best had so far been disappointing, but perhaps the fans will need to give the lad more time to settle in on Tyneside.

We expect Nicky Butt, Fitz Hall, Fabrice Pancrate, Kazenga LuaLua and maybe Shola Ameobi to all be moved out this summer.

When we look at the remaining squad, it looks like the positions that need strengthening for the Premier League are as follows:

right back
central midfield play-maker
winger
striker

When we say strengthen, we mean bringing in a player who will be a starter, not just somebody who is as good as what we already have.

Given this, it may cost some real money for some of these players, but rumors are that Mike will give Chris Hughton as much as £20M, and with some savvy scouting, that should be enough money for the summer transfer market.

We’ll not mentioned too many players until we are definitely promoted but we do notice that Habib Beye at Aston Villa hardly plays, and Martin O’Neill is famous for starting almost the same team all the time.

Habib has started just 8 games this season at Villa, and we sold him for about £2.5M last summer, so he could be a good buy at say £1.5M this summer.

However Habib is now 32, and Mike Ashley has stated that any new players should be 26 or younger.

We also notice that Villa’s other full-back Luke Young is also  not in the team right now, although again, Luke will be 31 come July, and he may also be too old.

With Newcastle’s scouting activities,  we may all be surprised with the players Newcastle draft in, but we’d love to make more signings like Sebastien Bassong, who we picked up for just £500K from Stade Rennais FC in Brittany, France in the summer of 2008.

Any ideas on players we should move for this summer?

i dont think we need to strengthen in centre midfield, i think guthrie or barton will be the creative spark in the midfield next year, with smith or nolan being the holding midfield, think one position youve missed is left back, mainly cover for enrique as we have no cover, maybe v aanholt back from chelsea. would like kevin doyle or shane long up front as they are both similar players and will get us goals, try an audacious bid for joe cole, maybe keep fitz hall and have steven taylor right back

i dont think we need a RB..we could easily play s.taylor there, cos colo-wili partnership works well.

Does everyone feel confident that we have enough midfielders who can play the holding role? Butt will be leaving (a cracking player in his day, but his legs have gone sadly), Smith is arguably not suited to the role at Premier League level, so who can we play there?

Nolan is arguably more of an attacking player, Guthrie is a schemer who isn’t overly strong in the tackle and Barton is surely at his best when going forward. So do you think any of these three are suited to sitting in the middle and breaking up opposition attacks?

If not, maybe we should be selling Smith and bringing in someone to do this job?

We can play Kadar at left back. However I think the idea of having a flexible defender somewhere in there would be good, to bolster numbers.

As for players to be sold, I wouldn’t be gutted to see Ryan Taylor sold. He does offer flexibility, but he’s not set the Championship alight so I worry about whether he’d ever be anything more than back-up in the Premiership. In which case sell him and bring in someone that might be able to challenge.

Vegar Eggen Hedenstad – who’s he?
Per Ciljan Skjelbred – would be a good signing, but 8 mil sounds too much.
Erik Ruseklepp – might be good, but sounds like another best to me. i think 5 mil’s too much for another gamble with no EPL experience. d.cisse sounds a better option.
Kamil Zayatte – no way. wouldnt want him for free.
Pablo Hernandez – again..i dont think club will spend 10 mio on a player, but if ashley decide to spend big money, gourcuff’s one of the best players on the planet. i really think signing pablo’s not a smart move…i mean…either pablo or wayne would be left on the bench…it would be stupid to spend 10 mio on a backup.
Patrick Van Aanholt – good player, but we have kadar – 1 of the rare players we have who NEVER let us down. he deserves to be 1st choice backup..if not a starter.

as for outgoing players i wouldnt mind if we get rid off: best, shola, r.taylor, smith, barton, xisco, pancrate, butt, hall. actually i hope they’re all sold.

Its easy to get carried away and start dreaming of players we would like to see in the PL.

But we arent there yet and the tought of MA spending anything over 5m on one player is beyond me.

Allowing myself to get carried away, i agree with Ed’s areas to improve on.

I think Simpson potentially is a weak link in the PL and would love to see a Beye return. Its surely win, win. Beye may be old but does have the experience that will allow Simpson to learn and eventually take over that position.

We also need cover at LB, Enrique is without doubt PL quality and a young up and coming LB would be welcome as Kadar is needed for CB cover along with Williamson.

Butt may well leave in the summer and i would like to see an impact player come in. Someone in the mould of a young Robbie Savage, not the most skillful but when needed gets stuck in and gets the crowd going! Perch of Forest can play this role but also RB and would be 2 players for the price of 1!

I honestly dont think we can afford to get a #10 type player. The PL is very tough and competative and with the wingers we have and the soild midifielders we should be fine, with just the one holding midfielder addition.
However i would like to see an additional winger, preferable a leftsided one. Cleverly of Man U / Watford would apease the fans wanting an attacking midfielder as he can play this role too.

We desperately need a striker………i mean a goal poacher in the vien of Beckford / Boyd.

So for me i would love to see:
    RB / DM (Perch)
    LB ( VA)
    W/AM (Cleverly)
    ST (Beckford)

And all for the princely sum of ……what ever Perch costs! As Beckford and Cleverly are out of contract and VA would only ever be a loan…….move over Mike, i’m more frugile than your good self!

    that would be perfect:)

in 2 years time we’d be fighting for europe with that squad.. but my concern is hughton..first of all: he’s taking carroll’s side – no sanctions whatsoever, etc. & also he doesnt give youngsters a proper chance. kadar plays very well every match, but hughton still picks hall before him . same with best – ranger. he should learn something from wenger (also moyes, oneill, etc.) – he gives everyone chances – a lot of them – just remeber aliadiere, bendtner, etc. as for hughton he doesnt give chances – it took him almost a year to start playing guthrie in the middle, kadar barely plays, ranger doesnt, etc… he played vickic for 5 minutes. it’s just sad cos we have so many talented youngsters who will leave us cos of him.

nightfa11, get out with that Cisse bollocks man. He wasn’t good enough for Sunderland, he isn’t good enough for us. He’s another Oba and we don’t want somebody who dresses like an inbred tropical bird with a love for his bank balance. Anyway, he just signed for Panathinaikos in June or something so I doubt they’d let him go (especially with him doing so well for them).

Also you’re changing around too much of the squad. You’d upset the dressing room. Competition for places is one thing, but only getting a chance on the pitch if the bus happens to explode and injure the starting XI, then you’re just looking for trouble. Ironic coming from somebody who wants to see youth players given a chance…

crucial thing we set us an realistic yet challenging target. not in the bottom 3 by Christmas should be the first target. 10th is challenging but 15th must be considered a success.

we need pace up front and on the wings.

    van aanholt
    beye
    scott parker

need a playmaker upfront with pace who likes drop deep.

pace in defence is crucial both lb and rb
downside to having beye that’s all.

mikel & gourcuff are both young & very talented..twice the players we have in our squad.. sure..cisse might not be the best option, but he’d still be our best striker. as for stating that cisse wasnt good enough for sunderland is absurd. he’s class & u know it…he just didnt fit in.. it was the same with us huntelaar with ac milan, veron & man utd, crespo & chelsea, shevchenko & chelsea, robbie keane & liverpool, quarsema & inter, etc etc etc… are u saying those players all suck?

I wish you’d drop this crusade against Carroll and Barton. Like I said before, stop whining about it until you know the full story, man. The fact is players want play time and taking first teamers and sidelining them for a season or more is a sure fire way to get transfer requests.

I’m not saying they’re bad at all, but your “just didn’t fit in” excuse is utter bull. He played well for the Mackem’s and he wasn’t given a permanent deal because he simply wasn’t good enough for them. What was his tally? 20 odd games and 11 goals? We could have 11 goals a season quite happily with what we’ve already got, thank you very much.

Gourcuff? Honestly I despair at how deluded some of our fans are.

The midfield is the key area though. It was that midfield that took us down, and it without improvement it will do it again next season. Only Guthrie and Barton are up to the job, and the latter cannot be relied upon.

RB is also a worry, Simpson is going to get torn apart by Premier League wingers.

Thump – ok..let’s compare: cisse scored 11 goals in 20 matches in EPL & carroll played 35 matches this season & scored 16 goals in championship, but it’s not even about goals…he’s not a trouble maker &..the thing is that with his pace he can force every defender to make a mistake..like jonas does.. & who puts the ball in in the end…does it really matter?

like i said…sure we could find someone better then cisse…BUT if we’re in search for a striker we need to get someone better then we already have… what’s the point of ending up with 5 average strikers, who’ll only stand in the way of ranger’s developement. sign class or nothing at all!

spending money we probably wont have to spare on a right back is bonkers when we dont have any left footed, left side cover at full back and left wing…

at rb we have simpson, r.taylor, collo, hall who can play there at left back we have enrique and kadar and kadar is no full back. by a long way.

cant see the point spending millions on another center back either when we could pick up hall for less than million who knows the premier league and wont get in the way of the development of kadar or taylor.

i would say van aanholt coming back should be a real possibility as it seems youth getting its chance at chelsea will never happen, start the process by inviting the lad to any post season promotion celebrations if we get up and chelsea allow it, make him feel wanted, the kids good enough to be hollands first choice lb in a couple of years, sound investment.

we need to be sensible with our spending so we can get good quality were we need in the first team so say adding van aanholt on loan, fitz hall for less than a million and perhaps jamie o’hara (mooted for sale for under £5m in press) in to replace smith who imo blackburn will move for again thank god as smith is never pl class. would leave us some cash hopefully to get a cf who will long term replace loven and score us goals and a left footed left winger as imo we need some variety and to think about putting jonas right wing now and again to mix up our attacking play.

would like to see this happen…

out – butt, smith, ameobi, pancrate, best

in – van aanholt loan, hall, o hara, left footed winger and proven pl cf. just about managable for 20m imo… especially with two high earners like butt and smith off the books.

if we get pablo hernandez from valencia i will eat my hat as he is mooted as spains first choice right winger for the world cup. if we want a winger called pablo we could look at almerias dimuative argintian pablo piati who can play on both wings (left footed) and behind a cf.

as for cf i think the best we could hope for would be someone like rodallega from wigan, given our likely budget.

I’m honestly hoping that we’ll see a gradual evolution of the policy we had in January. That means no big names; just very highly rated youngsters.

That will not get us more than survival, but it will allow the club to continue sustainable progress.

One more thing: Please, as the rumour mill starts up again, can we accept that almost every news story linking a player in or out of Newcastle is made-up guff which won’t happen?

EVERY WINDOW we get linked to dozens of players and EVERY WINDOW muppets believe it. And EVERY WINDOW all of those stories are wide of the mark.

(Remember a year ago? Linked with over 150 players coming in, ZERO correct. Nowt. Not one.)

I would really love to get a skillful attacking midfielder/playmaker in. Before this season started I was hoping to see more of Vuckic but his injury has made sure we haven’t seen much of him. It would have been great if he had gotten some playing time under his belt in the first team in the championship before we (hopefully) get back to the EPL. I’m still very hopefull he can become very good.

There are a few young players that I would be delighted to get in (although I doubt I ever will):

Jonjo Shelvey: A player I would really like us to sign is Jonjo Shelvey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonjo_shelvey). He might not be able to step up for EPL quite yet but he is very promising. Despite interest from several Premier League clubs, on the morning of 27 February, his 17th birthday, Shelvey signed his first professional contract with Charlton. On 9 September he signed a one-year contract extension until 2012. He scored his first league goal in the 3–2 win against Southampton on 4 April 2009. We could still try to get this youngster in.

Milan Badelj (21 years old): He is a completely modern midfielder and Dinamo Zagreb ‘s new Luka Modric , even though many football experts compare him in terms of physical attributes and playing style to Croatian legend Zvonimir Boban. Badelj is also called “The jewel from Dinamo” for his elegant style of play, clever passing and fine technical ability (taken from imscouting.com).

Afroto (ostafa Mohamed Selim): A 20 year old, stylish playmaker is a diminutive player, yet extremely speedy and creative. His high caliber technique and unpredictable movement on the pitch have already earned him a standing ovation from the Al Ahly crowd at the end of the Police Union game – a very rare gesture by the fans for such a young player (imscouting.com).

Vassilis Torosidis (24): Vassilis Torosidis is a phenomenon of Greek football. The 24-year-old is hugely versatile and regularly plays in different positions both for his club and country. Boasting great energy, a willingness to get forward and strong heading ability, the Olympiakos star is a manager’s dream as he can fill in all over the park. Predominantly an attacking minded right back, Torosidis has exclusively played on the left side of defence for the Greek national team. Although predominantly right footed he has a strong left peg and as a result can cover any position along the backline and in midfield. In midfield his strongest position is as a defensive or central midfielder and he has also been used far higher up the pitch, most notably this season under Brazilian coach Zico when he was played behind the strikers. Hi Guys i’m new on here but have been a reader for a while – v good blog. Anyhow, I genuinely dont think too much money needs to be spent on the squad. The keys for me are a right back, a creative midfielder and a clinincal striker. I expect it to be a busy window due to the fact we are likely to see 6/7 go out and I believe Ashley will not risk out PL status again.
I would like to see us go for Joe Ledley on a free, Cleverley on loan from Man Utd along with Macheda on loan. I would also monitor Carlos Vela’s situation at Arsenal. For me, Skjaelbred is a must – a huge toon fan, under 26, Norway international – a good prospect at aound 4.5mil. Kris Boyd could be a good free. heres my line up anyway.

    Harps
    S Taylor Williamson Colo Enrique
    Routledge Guthrie Barton Jonas
    Carroll Vela

If you want a good striker I think we should go for one of these two players: –

    1) Ezequiel Lavezzi (Napoli)

    OR

    2) Danijel Aleksic (Genoa)

Both are very talented players and probably would not cost too much. Lavezzi would cost more than Aleksic, but both would be well worth it.

If we are to look at bringing in quality young players who have experience at the top level and who can add serious competition to the current squad (obviously minus a few!)

    I would look at:

    BUYING:
    Chris Eagles (24)
    Onuoha (23)
    Scott Sinclair (21)
    Jamie Ohara (23)

    LOAN SIGNING:
    Van Aanholt
    Obertan
    Michael Johnson

Obvisouly we wouldn’t get all of these, but go for the lot and you never know what we could end up with….

I think that a bid of around £8m for J.Cole would
be money well spent on a quality player. As for left back I think we can get Paddy V back for £2m maybe. Up front seems to be the only other place we need quality added so it nay be optomistic but Huntelaar from Madrid as he is unhappy although he won’t want to play for little money. So I think somebody along the lines of Kevin Doyle or a young European play like Levezzi for £5m with Rolla Ameobi going the opposite way. Then we could possibly get J.Ledley from Cardiff but we don’t really need him although he is versatile. Just my opinion but I think it’s do-able but maybe not Huntelaar

If we bring back Beye we could also bring back Hugo Viana!! In other words they left, sod ’em!! Also why sign Cisse, has everyone forgotten that he beat the crap out of his wife!!!! At least Carrol only beat the shit out of Tayls!! I think we should let Graham Carr do his thing and find us some young talent who can develop complimented with some 25 or 26 year olds who have top league expirience in there relevant countries. But if we could have any player within reason it would have to be Jamie O’hara, affordable and damned good!

I feel we need a defensive midfielder to go with some players in the M Taylor or Bale mold who can challenge for both left back and left midfield on both the left and especially right side to take over from R Taylor although I could keep him for cover. The other position I see as a need is striker a real goal getter.

I would like to see Best, Butt and Smitty gone and in all honesty Barton aswell although only if O’hara was to replace him but i’d give him another year just because we have to stay up at all costs

I see the right side as being the hardest area to find someone.

Simpson needs quality competition although S Taylor can cover. Maybe a vet.

Scharner is free and can cover d mid and play in the back but not ideal

I would like to see O’hara and Taarabet brought in and maybe give Taarabet a chance to challenge out right or in the center he would be quality.

Carlton Cole would be my choice up top and we need a hybrid player on the left in the Bale Nzogbia or M Taylor mold although i would love etherington

I still cant think of a hybrid right sided player, anyone?

Our top target should be Dorrans from West Brom.

With the exception of Barton, none of our central midfielders have the pace to compete in the PL. People say Smith is our No.1 def mid but there are too many times he was outran and left the defenders exposed this season. His distribution skills is not the best too. Guthrie has the vision but lacks the accuracy, pace and strength. Can be easily out muscled of the ball.

    I’d say-
    IN
    Dorrans
    O’hara
Pablo Hernandez (massive shock if we can get him, but Valencia is in dire straits and might sell him instead of Villa and David Silva)
    Kevin Doyle or Robbie Keane
    Curtis Davies
    James Perch
    Mark Reynolds
    Alan Hutton or Kyle Naughton
N’Zogbia (in a world where good things always happen maybe, but Carroll lives in that world)

    OUT
    R.Taylor
S.Taylor (if rumours are true, ship him off to everton for 8m plus Yobo)
    Butt
Smith (to make way for Dorrans & O’hara)
    Pancrate
    Kazenga Lua Lua
    Leon Best
Xisco (love to give him a chance but faking injury is not cool)

    NO WAY
Michael Johnson (trouble maker and unfit)
Scott Sinclair (can’t even break into Wigan…)
Cisse (may not like our jersey (black n white) cause it may not match his boots n hair (pink, green, yellow or other striking colour))
Hermann Hreidarsson (bad luck to any teams trying to avoid relegation)

I would keep Ameobi too, holds the ball much much better than Carroll and has PL experience. Ameobi is in his prime and would have been our top scorer this season if not for injuries (although admittedly, he’s too injury prone).

Carroll is still not ready for PL starting XI. He still needs to work on using his massive frame to shield and control the ball better. He gives away too many fouls challenging for the ball in the air.

Would love to see O’Hara come in, as well as Nedum Onouha. If West Ham goes down a move for Cole would be great, but I’m sure a number of bigger clubs have the same idea. Kevin Doyle might be more realistic, and at least has shown he can score double digit goals in the prem. Something no current NUFC striker has demonstrated. (Wait take that back Smith did in a past life)

PVA back on a season long loan would be a good deal for everyone involved. I don’t think Chelsea would dream of transferring him at this point though.

Butt will retire, and even though he has lost it a bit he has been a great servant to the club through some rough times and a true professional. Shola and Pancrate should go as well.

If someone really will bid 8-10 mil for S taylor I say go for it.

    harper
    onohua-willo-collo-enrique
    routlege-ohara-guthrie/barton-jonas
    doyle-carroll

Subs: Krul, simpson, PVA, Kadar, ranger, smith, R taylor, Nolan, Loven, vuckic, best, maybe Beckford/Boyd a on free. And why not Cleverly if he is out of contract too.

This is a realistic lineup, given our constraints.

One last bid attempt…….Stephen Ireland. He is a bit of a nutcase, but he is pure class and only 23. Out of favor since mancini came to Man City, and wants out apparently. Of course Everton and Liverpool also want him……and he is probably a ways out of our price range. I may even be as crazy as the guy saying we should sign Gourcuff.

Wingers seem to be in good shape between routledge and Jonas…but if you wanna make a splash here go get my fellow yank landon donavan. Big time player at everton for his loan spell. He turned that side’s season around..Strikers are a dime a dozen these days. Shola, and lovenkrands are solid alternatives in the premier league but we need at least 1 superstar who will match up with big andy. I know Jozy altidore hasn’t done much with hull as far as putting the ball in the onion bag but has actually played well. Let’s face it Hull City are just a terrible side. He might be a bargain buy for the future. Robbie Keane is a thought. Don’t think he is gonna want to leave celtic. Tough call here. Maybe you go look for a promising young striker and play with what we got instead of buying another bust like owen.
