Joey Barton has come out today and spoken some plain truths about where Newcastle are right now, and he rightly says Newcastle have achieved nothing yet.
Joey Barton – we’ve achieved nothing yet
Joey Barton told the Evening Chronicle today:
“Nobody has gone big-time here as if the league has been won at any stage.” “When we’ve needed real men we’ve had it.”
“When we’ve had to rise to the occasion we have done and that’s what we have to do in the remaining fixtures.”
Barton is one of the players who wanted to stay last summer, but we also think that if any club had come in for him with a decent offer, Mike Ashley would have been all too happy to sell Joey.
We suspect the club (Mike Ashley) would still like to unload Joey this summer because of his past problems off the field, although we certainly don’t expect that to happen.
We have to hope that Joey has matured and his altercations are a thing of the past – but you really never know what will happen in the future.
But anyway we are hoping Joey has grown up – and not only that – but that he will start to repay the Newcastle club with some great performances in the near future.
Joey said the players at Newcastle are still just keen to put things right after the disasters of last season, which was a complete nightmare for Newcastle fans.
“This is still a hungry side that is still hurting and we’re just keen to put it right.”“We have a target on our backs because we are Newcastle United.”
“We are the so-called big club in the league. But we are still sitting top of the league and the thing that pleases me is the attitude of the camp.”
Newcastle manager Chris Hughton is up for the manager of the month award for March, and our Danish super striker Peter Lovenkrands is up for the player of the month. It would be great if they both won, and both have to be favorites for the month of March.
Joey Barton says that it’s hard to single out just one individual like Chris Hughton at Newcastle this season, because there are so many behind the scenes that are doing a good job too.
“You can’t really single out anybody.” “Chris is obviously the main figure, but there are a lot of people in the background too.”
“Colin Calderwood, Paul Barron, Alan Thompson the reserve coach and a great group of lads.” “We’ve got a great squad.”
We hope to see Joey start a few games before the end of the season, but with all the players back, there will be some real competition for places.
But we also expect Chris to start giving players like Joey, Ameobi and Pancrate some additional playing time over the last 7 games of the season, to see what they can do.
