Joey Barton, Smith, Best And Pancrate All Start

As expected, Newcastle manager Chris Hughton has made some changes to the side this afternoon at Peterborough, for the first of two games in three days.

But the defense remains unchanged from last Monday night’s win against Nottingham Forest, and Steve Harper, Danny Simpson, Fabricio Coloccini, Mike Williamson and Jose Enrique keep their places.

But captain Alan Smith returns to the center of midfield, with Danny Guthrie rested, and Joey Barton comes in for his first start since last September.

Frenchman Fabrice Pancrate also get a start on the right wing.

Both of our first choice wingers, Wayne Routledge and Jonas Gutierrez drop down to the bench, and will start on Monday night, no doubt.

Up front, as expected, Andy Carroll (ankle) misses out but surprisingly Peter Lovenkrands is rested, so the two big lads start with Leon Best and Shola Ameobi up front.

This is a good chance for Leon to get off the mark at Newcastle, and show us what he can do – we wish him all the best this afternoon.

3 points today coupled with a Nottingham Forest defeat (or even a draw) at Bristol City would mean that Newcastle are promoted, and some celebrations can begin – and it will be no coffee for us, thank you very much.

The bench is very strong in case Chris needs some of them in the second half – take a look at this bench – Tim Krul, Tamas Kadar, Peter Lovenkrands, Nicky Butt, Wayne Routledge, Jonas Gutierrez, Ryan Taylor

Howay The Lads – make the dream come true!

cant see the point of dropping our 2 most creative midfielders to the bench, would like to see us win and win big but this team seems to be a 1-0/2-0 game

It’s time the questions over Best, Pancrate & Barton were answered. This game matters, unlike anything post-promotion. If they can’t deliver 3 points against the Posh they ain’t gonna be much use against Man Utd & co. If this lot don’t win, you can pretty much write the transfer list at five-o-clock.

I think hes picked an awful team…

No pace, players playing out of position AND alot of players who havent played much football ie, Barton, Pancrate, Ameobi, Best, Smith….

I thought we would get beat today when I seen the team sheet. Looks like I might be right

    far too many changes….

we are being out played and outpassed by a relegated team!!

CH buck your ideas up, to say professional players cant play 2 games in 3 days is poor management

Not looking forward to next season

I’m surprised CH didn’t play R.Taylor instead of Nolan, I mean he’s already changed 3 of our decent midfielders for the dross thats losing to the bottom club now.. 🙁

If you want to save players, you play them first & rest them when you’re winning, not the other way round, which it seems CH will be doing!!!
