Leon Best Needs That First Goal For Confidence Booster

Leon Best had yet another frustrating afternoon at London Road on Saturday and Leon still has to get off the mark at Newcastle.

Leon Best – still to score for Newcastle

Leon Best, since he arrived form Coventry in January hasn’t looked too good, but he’s been unlucky as far as goals go, with the lad going close a few times since he’s been on Tyneside, only to hit the bar or see the goalkeeper make a great save.

What he needs for his confidence like any striker is a goal, and then hopefully we’ll see the real Leon Best , and that’s no doubt what Chris will be hoping for too.

Manager Chris Hughton talked about Leon today and Chris was asked if he needs a little sympathy:

“I don’t know if sympathy is the right word, but with any striker, goals give you confidence,”

“He played his part, but you want a goal for him. This is a lad who has scored goals and it will come for him.”

Leon should get plenty of chances in the next four weeks to get his first goal for Newcastle, although we are expecting Ameobi and Lovenkrands to get the start up front tonight against Sheffield United.

Leon Best played 112 times at Coventry and scored 23 goals, and in his career he’s played 169 times with 45 goals.

That’s about one goal every 4 games (3.75) and in contrast to that Ameobi has 60 goals in 273 appearance, which is about one goal in every 4.6 games, slightly worse than Leon.

Newcastle need just one point from their remaining 6 games to ensure promotion this season.

We should be able to do that and if not, then we look to Nottingham Forest to drop one point in their remaining 5 league games.

If he can’t hack in the Fizzy, and he can’t, he’s no good for us now. We can’t have passengers, that’s what last year’s pre-season clear out taught us. Let’s not go back to bad old ways.

ok im not bambies biggest fan,, but to be fair to the lad his 4.6 goal av is mainly in the prem,, a much tougher league,,

best on the other hand has played his football in loewr leagues,, where i think if shola played he would be a world beater,,,,

sorry ed ,, the guy dont need time to settle,, he should not play,,,
what in this link sugests he is any where good enough?

the sooner CH realizes he made a mistake the better our team will be,, i mean,, he is now holding ranger back,, and for this guy ,,,

    even you must see this

The Cap’n and catchy are right, Ed – 23 goals in 113 games at Coventry is about the same as Shola’s ratio – except HIS were in the Premiership.
This season Ameobi has scored a goal every game – which tells you all you need to know about this league. I don’t like knocking our players. I have been proved wrong about Enrique. But Best can’t expect to be spoonfed – getting starts ahead of Ranger when his performances don’t warrant them. We are all about our great youth policy – but then we won’t even play them in the Fizzy.
5 games left after tonight and Ranger, Kadar, Vukic etc. should be getting some game time. far more important than our record or maximising points. Show faith Chris.

This might sound harsh but he needs to score some goals to stick him in the shop window for me , he has scored goals at this level so if hits 2-3 in the last couple of games we might be able to off load him to another ccc team

That would take strong character and decisiveness from Hughton to decide to sell Best so soon after buying him. He prefers the softly softly approach and a show of loyalty.
Does he have the bottle to admit Best isn’t cutting it and is just taking up a squad place and wages?

Best had his chances and failed to take them, tonight it looks that Lovengrads and Ameobi ( Carrol) will be our two strikers and as soon as the top spot is quaranteed then rotations can begin.
Ranger, Kadar,Vuckic,Krul and Tozer can get football minutes under their belts and play for a place on the bench for next season

My past posts have been a little harsh on Best and in all honesty i would love to see him get his goal. On the other hand i think the EPL will be a step to far for the lad and he will spend more time on his backside then on his feet a top defenders will just clobber him every time i also feel this way about Ameobi. I feel we need to let Best and Ameobi depart in the summer and look towards bringing in a decent PL striker, i’m not asking for another Owen or Shearer or anything like that just someone that poses a threat. I believe we should do all we can to get Carroll and Taylor tied down at NUFC after all they are the clubs future and are both

Here we go again. Let’s all hammer some bloke before he gets his feet under the table. Ed is right – he needs a goal that’s all. Bellamy was in the same position before his first goal – against the mackems – and he never looked back after that, except to abuse the referee. He has usually been playing with another big bloke – Carroll – and they can’t play together well. I saw him at Watford and I believe he has more class than Shola will ever have, sadly. He certainly puts himself about more and can jump – talents which seem to have evaded Shola.

And apart from that Ranger is twice the player that Best is and he is a few years junior.

And I fear Ranger isn’t the full shilling. There is something wrong – he doesn’t even get on the bench. He came to us with a track record of problems off the field and every time I hear Bobby Moncur talk about him on the radio he seems to suggest that his attitude and behaviour leave a lot to be desired. And when Bobby says it’s Wednesday………….. it’s Wednesday.

Hello Toon 1978 – well we shall only find out when he gets there………. he’s good enough for Trappatoni. Some players are more suited to the Premiership than the Championship. All I’m saying is let’s not write him off before he gets off the mark. Goals are like oxygen to strikers. Let’s stop the criticism which will only dent his confidence and make it less likely that he will get that first vital goal for us.

Us the public know very little of what goes on hehind the scenes and i would rather ignore the rumours. The same for Carroll and Taylor all this stuff about girlfriends wages just doesn’t sit well for the rest of the team. I prefer to give my opinion by what i see on the pitch and Ranger is a better player all together and has believe it or not scored a few goals for us unlike Best.

OK – let’s ignore the rumours and stay with the facts…….”His career was almost over before it began, whilst playing for the club he was sentenced to 11 weeks in a Young Offender’s Institute for his part in an armed street robbery in Muswell Hill committed before signing for the club. He returned to Southampton after completing his sentence, but was eventually released as a player with a bad reputation.” That’s from Wikipedia/Telegraph. 2 goals in 25 games. Seriously – if he’s that good he would be more in the picture than he is. I think they are trying to teach him to be a pro. He certainly has talent.

I cannot argue with what you have said about his past you are spot on but what i am saying is that i believe Ranger is a better player. I’m going by what i see on the pitch and Ranger can hold the ball up and complete a pass more often than Best and yeah 2 goals but thats from the subs bench but still at least he has bagged us a few. Best has started alot more games than Ranger and has still failed to impress.

I will stick by Best for now and i would love him to get his goal and prove me as well as many other fans wrong. I will be one of the first to apologise IF he does that. I do believe he has been unfortunate and the ball has not sat for him he just needs a spark of luck and maybe just maybe that could spark off a flurry of goals for him fingers crossed 🙂

as for the ranger saga, i told everyone this when he signed, he is meant to be a complete tool. i have a very good mate jamie hatch of southampton, and he told me everyone hated him, he had so much ability but he will blow it, as he thinks hes a gangster

For all the good Hughton has done and he has, Best is one glaring mistake on 2 counts. It turns out Best cost as much as Moses would have done and Moses is a real genuine talent. Secondly I am sickened that Ranger has had to take a back seat after showing so much promise.

Krul, Tozer, Ranger, Vuksic and Kadar should all start the last 5 games after today.

the sooner we get Best put back on the transfer list the better. some1 in the championship will think hes a good player, take him off our hands and we can get on with the job of staying in the prem.
im sorry but we only have room for one donkey at newcastle and that donkey for me is shola!
