Newcastle Interested In Signing Alan Hutton

News today that Newcastle United may be after Spurs full-back Alan Hutton.

Alan Hutton – Newcastle seem interested

When 25 year-old Hutton was at Rangers and was playing for Scotland a few years back he looked a top class right full-back.

But since he moved to Spurs in late January, 2008, he’s not had a good time of it in England, and has been unable to get into the full Tottenham side on a regular basis.

The transfer fee Spurs paid was said to be about £5M, and we suppose the London club would want to get that back for him, but maybe they would take a little less.

Since January Alan has been playing at nearby Sunderland on loan, and it seems from what we have seen of him on Wearside, he is starting to get back to his old Rangers form.

It’s not Newcastle that are saying they are interested in the Glasgow-born player, but Spurs manager Harry Redknapp.

But Harry Redknapp has claimed that Hutton has held talks with Newcastle already about becoming part of Chris Hughton’s side for the Premiership next season.

This is what Harry said:

“I think you will find Newcastle are in for him as well – someone has told me he has been talking to Newcastle,”

“He is not supposed to be but he has, you know. We will only let him go if we get an awful lot of money for him, otherwise he comes back to Tottenham.”

Just like Harry – making sure to pump up the fee. 😀

But with Hutton already at Sunderland they would seem to have first shot at signing the Scottish International, who has 16 caps for his country, and Steve Bruce has already said he wants him at the club long term.

But once Alan knows Newcastle are interested, which apparently he does, he will know all about the Newcastle club, and could well want to come to Tyneside.

Scottish players have always settled very easily at Newcastle, being so close to the border. If it was a straight choice between Newcastle and Sunderland we assume he would choose the bigger club and arrive on Tyneside – that one’s for the Sunderland supporters!

Alan will knows Peter Lovenkrands, who was at Rangers until 2006, when Alan was there, and maybe Peter made the under-cover approach to Alan telling him Newcastle were interested.

The lad’s a good player and maybe even worth £5M, and we need to bring in a top full back who can push Simpson and Enrique, since full back in one of the areas where we have little cover.

Hutton is said to be on wages of around £1.5M/year and that would fit into Newcastle’s new wage policy, and if Chris wants him and the fee is £5M, we think Mike Ashley would back his manager.

Chris’ dealings in the transfer market so far have nearly all been spot on.

Hutton is 6’1″ tall and played for Rangers, his home town club, from 2002 until leaving in January off 2008, and appeared about 145 times for the Glasgow club with 4 goals.

So far he has appeared 36 times for Spurs with no goals.

He joined Sunderland on loan in January but seems to be out of the side right now through injury.

We’ve always thought Hutton could be a good player in the Premiership, so we think his signing would strengthen the Newcastle squad and would be happy enough if Alan arrived on Tyneside this summer.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

I think Spurs paid about 9m for him so to get him for 5m would be a good bit of business

We are the establshed prem club with more financial clout & bigger wage structure . This is dirty Arrys sour grapes from been well & truly spanked at The Stadium of Light . Hutton is only going one way. You prob couldnt afford his signing on fee!!

Hutton’ll do. Don’t know how much of this is true though. Old Steakface seems to say whatever arrives at his brain first; “I turned down the Newcastle job”, which he was never offered etc…

Daffy. You’re a chuff mate. Sunderland are a yo-yo club. Don’t think that because we spent one season out of the last sixteen in your league you are better, or even as good as we are. BAM!

As for Hutton…no interest what so ever…certainly not for an awful lo..lo..lo..lo.. lot of money

Daffy your welcome but expect to give as good as you get.

So does that negate the fact he has scored over 30 goals in a shite team?

One thing I think Houghton has been good at though is buying decent backs so maybe it should be a case of trust the managers. Ole harry probably is trying to squuze some more bucks outta the deal though

Ed, you may be an IT exec in a past life, but I wouldn’t send you for the messages.

Yesterday you were saying Ashley MAY give Hughton 20million, but you figured probably not even that. Now we need a GOOD striker – that’s at least 12 million, we need a GOOD winger and a GOOD midfielder (perhaps even 2) as well as a Right-back and cover for Left-back . And you’re talking up blowing 5 mil on Hutton as a good deal?

I disagree mainly that we can get by on 20million, rather than any problem with Hutton. But if you are right and we have to prepare for next season on only that amount we should look at getting the likes of Beye on a free from Villa.

S’alright Daffy. I think you have a good manager and a good striker which are two things Newcastle did not have in the premier league for a few years. Now I think we have some stability and a good manager and whist we have a good big man it would be great to have a great little man two. I dont like Sunderland because I love Newcastle but I hate Tottenham too…so seeing you spank them and damage their champions league is good and it means we get a derby next year as you’ll be staying up.

We did manage to get Guthrie from Liverpool in similar circumstances in 2008.
Hutton would be excellent – the right kind of signing we should be making I dare say.
However, there are question marks over the price, and if he would come to the toon.
    Here’s hoping.

Getting Beye back on a free/low fee would suit me personally, although do you guys not think Simpson can cut it in the Premiership?

I’ve also asked this a few times but got no answer – assuming Smith can’t cut it in the Premier League, who would you have playing defensive midfield for us? Everyone’s shouting for an attacking midfielder to be bought, but can Barton/Nolan/Guthrie break up the opposition’s attacks?

Butt, Hall, Xisco,Pancrate out. Ranger and Tozer out on loan.

I like getting the youngsters in as we have been doing and I think patience is the key for us. We have good spirit but youngsters pushing throuhg is always good so Cleverly for midfield, Moses and Rodiellga (bad spelling but Wigan is my pick for the 3rd relegation spot). I am not sure about full backs. It seems to be a posi every team would love to fill so maybe I defer to the professional and let Houghton pick this one.

I do think being in the coke league has opened to our eyes that there is some quality in there and I dont mind looking at these sort of players too though best has been a diappointment.

    How bout you?

I think Smith can cut it in the PL but only as long as he is under no pressure to go forward.

I would not mind Beye back but the team spirit seems so good that a player who left whilst we were down in the lower league coming back in might disrupt that

One thing weve learnt about this season is you need a rock solid defence in this league which we havent had. Iwould def sign Hutton as hes been class + mensah . still think we need to fill left back pos . midfield get rid of richardson , reid . poss bring in bentley , ohara + like that diamante at west ham . forward – get rid of jones + bring in carlton cole..

If burnley go down which i think they will is danny fox not worth a look as back up for the bull at left back??

would love to see O’hara at Newcastle next year as much as Smith is a grafter i think there are still alot of question marks over his ability in midfield and O’hara in my opinion would be a much safer bet.
