News today that Newcastle United may be after Spurs full-back Alan Hutton.
Alan Hutton – Newcastle seem interested
When 25 year-old Hutton was at Rangers and was playing for Scotland a few years back he looked a top class right full-back.
But since he moved to Spurs in late January, 2008, he’s not had a good time of it in England, and has been unable to get into the full Tottenham side on a regular basis.
The transfer fee Spurs paid was said to be about £5M, and we suppose the London club would want to get that back for him, but maybe they would take a little less.
Since January Alan has been playing at nearby Sunderland on loan, and it seems from what we have seen of him on Wearside, he is starting to get back to his old Rangers form.
It’s not Newcastle that are saying they are interested in the Glasgow-born player, but Spurs manager Harry Redknapp.
But Harry Redknapp has claimed that Hutton has held talks with Newcastle already about becoming part of Chris Hughton’s side for the Premiership next season.
This is what Harry said:
“I think you will find Newcastle are in for him as well – someone has told me he has been talking to Newcastle,”
“He is not supposed to be but he has, you know. We will only let him go if we get an awful lot of money for him, otherwise he comes back to Tottenham.”
Just like Harry – making sure to pump up the fee. 😀
But with Hutton already at Sunderland they would seem to have first shot at signing the Scottish International, who has 16 caps for his country, and Steve Bruce has already said he wants him at the club long term.
But once Alan knows Newcastle are interested, which apparently he does, he will know all about the Newcastle club, and could well want to come to Tyneside.
Scottish players have always settled very easily at Newcastle, being so close to the border. If it was a straight choice between Newcastle and Sunderland we assume he would choose the bigger club and arrive on Tyneside – that one’s for the Sunderland supporters!
Alan will knows Peter Lovenkrands, who was at Rangers until 2006, when Alan was there, and maybe Peter made the under-cover approach to Alan telling him Newcastle were interested.
The lad’s a good player and maybe even worth £5M, and we need to bring in a top full back who can push Simpson and Enrique, since full back in one of the areas where we have little cover.
Hutton is said to be on wages of around £1.5M/year and that would fit into Newcastle’s new wage policy, and if Chris wants him and the fee is £5M, we think Mike Ashley would back his manager.
Chris’ dealings in the transfer market so far have nearly all been spot on.
Hutton is 6’1″ tall and played for Rangers, his home town club, from 2002 until leaving in January off 2008, and appeared about 145 times for the Glasgow club with 4 goals.
So far he has appeared 36 times for Spurs with no goals.
He joined Sunderland on loan in January but seems to be out of the side right now through injury.
We’ve always thought Hutton could be a good player in the Premiership, so we think his signing would strengthen the Newcastle squad and would be happy enough if Alan arrived on Tyneside this summer.
What do you think?
