The chances of Newcastle being able to win the Championship were improved this afternoon.
WBA manager Roberto Di Matteo – team drew 1-1 at Watford
West Brom were held 1-1 at Watford this afternoon, but it was a very late goal that got West Brom the point.
After 85 minutes Watford had gone 1-0 ahead with a goal from Danny Graham, and that was just 6 minutes after Watford’s John Harley had been sent off, to reduce Watford to 10 men.
It would have been a terrific 3 points for Watford in their fight to avoid relegation, but an equalizer from Chris Brunt deep into injury time salvaged a point and deprived 10 man Watford of a precious 2 points.
Newcastle are now 3 points clear of WBA with two games in hand, one of which they will play this evening against Sheffield United at St. James’ Park, where a point will see the Newcastle club automatically promoted back to the Premiership at the first attempt.
The most points West Brom can now get if they win their remaining 4 league games is 95, so Newcastle will need to get 10 points from their last 6 games to be assured of winning the league.
And maybe even less than that, since the Newcastle goal difference of +47 is superior to that of WBA (+38).
In other Championship results this afternoon, Reading continued their excellent form of late with a 3-0 home win against Coventry, Middlesbrough had a good 2-0 win at Plymouth, and Leicester City stopped their run of four successive defeats with a 4-0 hammering of QPR at home.
Ipswich Town continued their winning ways with an excellent 3-1 win at Derby County, and Roy Keane’s side now seem to be safe from relegation being on 54 points, 9 points clear of the relegation zone.
Blackpool, who visit Newcastle on Saturday, continued their good form with a 2-0 home win against Doncaster Rovers and are now a single point away from a play-off position.
