Kevin Nolan has been one of Newcastle’s top players this season, and it was perhaps fitting that he scored one terrific goal last night after 73 minutes, to get Newcastle the 2-1 victory over Sheffield United.
Kevin Nolan – scoring his wonder goal last night
It was Kevins’ 15th goal of the season and after the game Kevin talked about the Newcastle fans:
“You can offer your thanks through the media and things like that but it’s always nicer to be able to do it in person and that was just my way of showing our appreciation.”
“For what they’ve done after sticking by us after last season, that was just a way of thanking them for their support.”
“To have nearly 50,000 fans there I don’t think you’d get that anywhere else. I was blown away – it was incredible, ridiculous really.”
“So a massive thanks goes to all of them and hopefully now we can go on as a team, the fans included, to bigger and better things.”
“We hope to give them a lot more to cheer about during the next few weeks and celebrate the promotion by winning that title for them.”
Kevin has been a big figure both on and off the field for Newcastle this season, and it wouldn’t surprise us at all if he was appointed club captain in the summer, since Nicky Butt will not be at Newcastle next season, at least as a player.
This is also the most goals Kevin has ever scored in one season, and he looks a bargain buy at just £4M, doesn’t he?

Comment #3Nolan is undoubtedly my choice as captain for next season.
He has natural leadership qualities which have shown through this year and I think the captaincy will sit well on his shoulders.

Comment #4I think he should be captain. He offers something that other players are lacking which is he does it all. He is a decent defender and can put in a gooood solid tackle. He is a good passer and most of the time runs his legs off. he also has that ability to come up with the match winning goal and that is something we have been lacking. He is also rarely injured.
I say let Guthrie and barton fight it out, not literally of course, for the other midfield spot and use smith as a back up and for tough away games.

Comment #5Hughton deserves a crack at the EPL next season without any doubt but i do question his tactics at times. At the end of the day he has guided us back to the promise land and if anyone deserves backing it is Hughton. Ashley owes Hughton a huge dept of favour and he can do this by backing him to the hilt with a decent transfer kitty after all Ashley will recieve a huge lump from TV we must of been shown a dozen times at least and he recieves money for promotion so i hope he backs Hughton all the way. What many fans aswell as myself don’t want to see is big money signings for players who do not want to wear the shirt with pride, i read an article by a Spurs writer saying we should go in for King and Keane…….no thanks imo, one is a crock and the other is to old. Nice way to offload dead wood by them Spuds who have poaced our best players of recent years. There are a couple of players that we should let go in Pancrate and Ameobi and the jury is still out on Best.

Comment #7For the first half of the season it was Smith’s leadership that had us ticking over – he was excellent.
Players we should phase out :
AMEOBI(can’t believe he’s still here)PANCRATE
BEST
BARTON (disgusted at the mud he’s dragged us through since he has been here – get rid)
BUTT
LOVERMAN (did very well but will struggle in the PL)

Comment #8Smith did a good job as captain at the start of the season but i dont think he will get in the team enough next year to be captain.
he’s just not good enough in midfield at the top level. He works hard but in the premiership he will get the run around by any player with a bit of quality and will end up topping the red/yellow card lists in no time!

Comment #9Jamesthefirst…Why would Lovenkrands struggle in the Premiership? He did well for us last season when he mostly a bit part player/winger, scored goals, created chances and worked hard…
He has been given more time in the first team, spent more time with the squad and established himself as one of the most dangerous players we have.
Getting rid/phasing him out would be a ridiculous thing to do in my oppinion! Same with Ameobi to be fair. I’m not his biggest fan, I think he can often be lazy and makes poor decisions, but the lad has worked hard and were it not for unfortunate injuries could easily be on 20/30 goals for the season! Sure, he’ll never be able to mix it with the big teams, but we’re not expected to beat them anyway!

Comment #12i hope not but only time will tell. i always thought he would eventually be the clubs full time captain. If the rumours are right tho the club will have alot of work to do behind the scenes to build bridges between him and carroll. its canny hard to move on and be friends/work together after some1 has kicked ya head in.

Comment #13wsquare maybe you should put ya brain in gear before you talk idiot.Toon 1978 agree with ya there 1 is to old the other1 is a note that hardly every trains.Jamesthefirst cant believe ya knocking ameobi, a fella that would of got 40 goals this season if not for his injury. And as far as Barton is concerned, i will point at Roy Keane at man utd, who openly admitted he finished a fellas career, did you hear the man utd fans say we should be getting rid of him, did we hell cause they knew what he brought to the table, so don’t be a mug mate.ED don’t think we will go far wrong, with Nolan for captain next season.

Comment #14if taylor/carroll has to be rid, i say rid carroll. you can see ameobi’s goal record in the championship is comparable to carroll’s, which means carroll will be ineffectual in the premiership. and steven taylor is a proven centreback at premiership level
