Are Newcastle Really Interested In Signing Marlon Harewood?

There are several news reports today that Newcastle manager Chris Hughton is keen to snap up Aston Villa striker Marlon Harewood.

Marlon Harewood – are the Magpies really interested?

Marlon was on loan at Newcastle last year and at times looked good in a Newcastle shirt and scored five goals in 15 appearances in the three months he was at the club through December of last year.

It even looked like Newcastle boss Chris Hughton would have extended Marlon’s loan in January but was forced to cancel his plans after Harewood broke his foot during training.

But the former Nottingham Forest striker is now fit again and back in full training at Villa Park. Marlon was signed for £4M by the Villa from West Ham in 1997.

It’s clear that Aston Villa will not offer the player a new contract, although Marlon will turn 31 in August, and Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has said he only wants players coming in during the summer who are 26 years-old or younger.

Marlon has played notably at Nottingham Forest and West Ham, and has a total of 439 first class appearances with 124 goals, but we’d be very surprised if Newcastle sign Harewood in the summer.

If Newcastle want to pick up a striker for nothing this summer, then Jermaine Beckford, who is just 26, is available on a free transfer.   And we don’t expect him to accept any new contract offered by his Leeds United club, who unfortunately are  no longer assured of  promotion from League One this season.

Of course Jermaine is unproven at the top levels of English football, but he may be worth a chance, since he would cost nothing and his wages would be well within the range the Newcastle club are now willing to pay.

The 6’2″ Beckford has scored 27 goals in 42 games for Leeds United this season, that included goals against Manchester United at Old Trafford and Tottenham Hotspur during Leeds Uniteds’  excellent FA Cup run earlier this year.

In his 164 first class appearances  for Leeds, Carlisle and Scunthorpe United, the Ealing, London-born player has 90 goals.

Comments welcome.

He was a stopgap only. This is just a media stopgap story too. We may have fog on the Tyne but that does not mean we cannot see through the crap the press comes out with at times.

The difference between Harewood & Beckford is Harewood has PL experience but I still wouldn’t buy either of them, as Harewood is too old & takes weeks to get match fit & Beckford is a 1 game charlie, funny how we’ve not heard owt about him since his goals in the FA cup, obviously not lightening up the League 1 table eh!!!
If we buys a striker, we should look at Beattie, Cort, Keane or Boyd, yes they may cost us a few mil but they are at least playing & scoring goals in there respective leagues!!

Oh lord I really hope not. This is exactly what I’m afraid of will be going on in the transfer market this summer.. “yeah lets only buy players with premier league experience”.. will this is what you get, as only mid and lower class PL players will want to join and will be inside our price range. I’d rather take a huge gamble with a foreign player than buying a certified donkey only because he has PL experience.

There are quite a few players out there who’ll be quite happy to join our new improved team & not all of them are donkeys, plus a little experience goes a long way just as long as they will work for £35k a week, I’m sure lots of PL players are on a lot less than that, I mean, Stokes wage bill is only £29m a year & others are less, so their players can’t be earning that much can they!!!

I’d take Beckford over Beattie any day unless we can get beattie on a six month contract because thats how long he performs for a team before thinking he should be playing for man u and gets stroppy and stops scoring.

If we got rid of best, xisco and sent ranger on loan I would want a speedy striker to complement carroll, mclovin, shola.

As you say Ed, Marlon will turn 31 in August, and Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has said he only wants players coming in during the summer who are 26 years-old or younger.

Ok we could get him on a free but still, given we’ve to pay his wages in the Prem, what sort of return’s that going to bring the club?

I suspect that these stories have been fuelled by Harwood’s agent who’ll no doubt be keen to get the lad fixed up somewhere.

As far as Beckford’s concerned, it seems that the blue side of Stanley Park’s expecting him to sign for Everton.

Beckford on a free with a sensible wage makes sense. If it doesn’t work out we could sell him next year (still 27) to a newly relegated Fizzy club and make a million or so clear profit. Think business, boys! It’s risk free!!

Another thing is Beckford is different to Carroll, Shola, Lover and Ranger in his style. We need to be able to mix and match up front in the Prem to keep defences guessing. Rather than one star striker (= injury) better have 4, 5 or even 6 effective strikers competing for places within a strategic game plan.

I wouldn’t shed a tear if the N09 shirt was retired for good, it has dominated our style for too long.

Hi DJG, I’m no Beckford fan as it happens, but what I’m saying is on a free he would have a chance to prove himself one way or the other as one of a varied strike force. Remember, even Shearer wanted him, and who am I to argue about strikers with our ex n09?

Besides, many times strikers have lost interest in their clubs, and it was well documented he wanted away in January, so this might explain his current lack of form.

Bottom line, on a free we could turn a profit on him if he turns into Best mkII. So it’s a win-win with nothing to lose. Unlike Harewood which would be an utter waste…

PS: It would also be a bummer if Everton sign him and he scores against us!

Don’t really want either. Harewood is finished, looked average in the fizzy pop league. Beckford is a mercenary.
As for summer signings there are plenty of players at PL clubs we probably have a chance of getting.
Examples being; Carlos Vela, Curtis Davies, Steve Sidwell, Chris Eagles, Danny Fox, Philipp Degen, Michael Johnson??, Santa Cruz, Tom Cleverly
Get some loans like; Kakuta and Van Aanholt from Chelsea, Santa Cruz from Man City or Anderson and Obertan from Man Utd.

Would be too stupid. Come on…Harewood?

We should do like Manchester United and find a real gem in another league. Our best way to get hold of a classy striker without necessarily paying too much. The guy Man Utd signed today has a great goal-to-match ratio, and he’s young. Come on scouting team, find us something classy! The youth policy is for me “overrated” in Newcastle. Do we really have this youth policy? I mean, we cant even start with a young player, with the exeption of proven Andy Carroll. And that’s in the Championship!

Carlos Vela: Could be exiting. Has not really proven anything yet though. Maybe we could help him?

Curtis Davies: Has always been a fan of this guy, but he has a shoulder that forever will be a big risk when it comes to injury. No thanks, because of injury problems.

Steve Sidwell: good player, could be well worth a shot.

Chris Eagles: An ok player for me. Nothing more, nothing less. He has his problems off the field as well. No thanks.

Danny Fox: Have not seen this guy too much in action. Heard good things though, but would definitely prefer Van Aanholt if possible.

Phillip Degen: Ok, but very injury prone. No, for me.

Michael Johnson: was a really exciting talent, but have not impressed at all at lately. Another aspect is that he newly said he wanted to stay with City. I also saw that he has become rather fat..?

Santa Cruz: Good player, but injury prone and would be a too costly player.

Tom Cleverly: Exciting, but Ferguson has said that Cleverly is in Manchester Uniteds future plans.

    When it comes to loans:

    Van Aanholt – come back!
Anderson – personally dont like the player because his off field problems and playing style.

    Players i would like:

    Adam Lallana
    Chris Gunter
    Jamie O’Hara
    Van Aanholt

Have not really considered what position we need players in, but these are some good players that should be in our price range.
