Seb Larsson and Pederson Both Free Agents This Summer

With a little prompting and information from one of  our readers, Laposna, we’ve looked at some players whose contracts run out this season, and will therefore be available for free in the summer.

Sebastien Larsson – wants out of Birmingham?

Two players that may interest Chris Hughton are Seb Larsson at Birmingham City, who was a Newcastle target a couple of years ago, and at the time said he’d love to join Newcastle, and Morten Gamst Pederson, the Blackburn winger.

We think Larsson would walk to Newcastle, if the Magpies showed any interest in him, and apparently he is a little upset after losing his place in the Birmingham side recently.

But when we’ve seen him play this season, he’s looked very good and he can certainly cross a ball from the right wing.  The Swede has already been capped 20 times by his country and started his career at Arsenal, back in 2001.

He played 7 times for the Gunners, whom he joined as a 15 year-old back, before moving to Birmingham on loan in 2006, and after some impressive performances signed a 3 year contract in 2007.

He has made 28 starts and 5 sub appearances this season with 4 goals, and at Birmingham in total he has appeared 159 times with 132 starts and 21 goals.

The 5’10” midfielder, who usually plays on the right wing but can also play at full-back, was born in the Swedish town of Eskilstuna, and played for his home town club until 2001, when Arsenal picked him up and put him through their Youth Academy.

Morten Gamst Pederson has been in so-so form this season, but the last time we watched Blackburn play he was taking the throw-ins, very much like Rory Delap does at Stoke City, so if we got him we could have a long throw-in threat to players like Andy Carroll, which would frighten the living daylights out of PL defenses.

The Norwegian has been stalling over the signing of a new deal, but former Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce, now in charge at Blackburn, seems desperate to tie down the player, but it may well be Pedersen wants to gauge the interest in him from other clubs.

However, he’s 28 years-old now and not the 26 or under that Newcastle owner has mandated to his manager Chris Hughton, for new players coming into the club this summer.

Pederson has played for Norway 54 times with 12 goals, and he was at Tromsø until joining Blackburn in 2004.  At the Norwegian club he played 85 times with 43 goals.

At Blackburn he’s so far played 234 times with 38 goals, but seems to fit the bill less at Newcastle than does the young Larsson. who seems a great prospect.

But we’re sure these are two players that Chris Hughton already knows about, and it wouldn’t surprise us one little bit if he goes after the Swedish International, who we understand  Sunderland are also after.

Well, that’s going to be disappointing for Sunderland fans, but what can we say? 😀

We think Seb Larsson would be an absolute bargain, if Newcastle can persuade the  player to come to Tyneside.

Comments always welcome.

I would take either player frankly. SL is a very decent player indeed and very adaptable. MGP on his day is one of the finest midfielders in the game. I think his season at blackburn has been marred by Allardyce’s tactics, rather than a loss of form.

Larsson in particular would be great, I think I heard on SkySports News that he had started discussing a new contract with Birmingham.
Hope Hughton is getting a shift on with these players, whilst the oppurtunity is still there.

I remember being linked with Larsson a few seasons back and his improved no end in the last few seasons…would be a brilliant signing…just the kind of signing that we can expect in the summer, as for pederson…cant really see where he’d fit into the team in terms of a starting place unless we were to push Jonas to the right flank and have pederson on the left but I think CH would be a bit reluctant to do that seen as one of our biggest threats this season has been the Jonas and Jose combo on the left.

In swedish media earlier this week Larsson and his agnet said that they were upset that he had been dropped without any comments on why. He has played well this season and when he hasn’t played Birmingham has been less successful. They assumed he was dropped because he had not signed a contract extention and that Birmingham tried to preassure him into doing so.

All in all it seems the Larsson – Birmingham relationship is getting frosty. Good opportunity for NUFC to get a great young versatile international player in. Go for him!

Gamst was so impressive his first season at Blackburn, but that was about 5 years ago now. If we can ressurect him it would be great but Im not convinced. Maybe pther positions should be a priority.

Other players we should look at

Gojko Kacar. Great serbian young player currently in struggling Hertha Berlin. He was one of the biggest stars in last years U21 championships and can become a great player. Would probably jump away from Hertha gladly at the moment.

Ragnar Sigurdsson – IFK Gothenburgs centre back has been the best centre back of the swedish league for 2-3 seasons now. Would still be quite cheap and definately worth a try.

Both decent players but given my druthers would if available get O`Hara and Dorrans.
    Younger and better IMO.

Per Ciljan Skjelbred would be an amazing signing, very highly thought of over in norway, only 22 and is a newcastle fan who’d be proud to wear the shirt! and im sure ive read quotes in the past saying that he’d swin to newcastle to sign!

Larsson isn’t a bad player by any stretch but I’m not sure how much of an improvement over Routledge he’d be. A good depth signing with some upside (his performances have steadily improved since Birmingham’s most recent relegation) but I think there may be better options out there. Especially if B’ham had a club option on him and exercised it.

MGP is a shadow of the dominant player he was for Blackburn 3-5 seasons ago. He has that threat of being able to produce the brilliant at any moment, but those moments have become increasingly scarce as time has gone on. I wouldn’t take the chance on him unless it was free, and he accepts a backup’s wage.

I’d love to see us move for Bullard (likely available if/when Hull go down, on the cheap) and Jozy Altidore. I’m not sure about the availability of wide players come next season, but a cheap talent or perhaps a loan signing from one of the top Prem clubs wouldn’t go amiss. If Benayoun is desperate to split from Anfield we should be hot on his heels as well, such a quality player.

We need cover on our wings, at the moment we only have Jonas on the left and Routledge on the right. Pederson and Larsson are both proven Prem quality i’d get them signed up without a doubt. Would add strength and depth to the squad. I hate getting excited about signings that will not happen but i can’t help it 🙁

Ohara, Larrson , Albin and Skjelbred would old be good signings we also need two full backs either side for competition players like Perch and Fox. So a summer with signings like this could see safety in the EPL.

    In:

    O’hara
    Skjelbred
    Larrson
    Albin
    Fox
    Perch

    Out :

    Ameobi
    Butt
    Smith
    Hall
    R.Taylor
    Pancrat

I can’t think of any out and out striker that we could attract in the moulds of your Shearers and Owens. I think that our Scouts should have hawk eyes through the world cup to identify someone of that calibre who NUFC can afford and attract.

Because Bullard doesn’t run the risk of a red card every other match. Or getting arrested. Barton seems to have lost his game-changing ability somewhere between injury and jail time. Bullard may be an injury risk, but he controls midfield every time he steps on the pitch.

I’m a huge Skjelbred fan and I think he’d be a great signing. Also always been a fan of Jamie O’Hara, so those are both good signings. May perhaps want to think in terms of a defensive mid to replace the loss of Nicky Butt, but we’ve done well without using him much thus far and I imagine we could continue in that vein next season.

Wouldnt want Pederson to be honest, has a certain amount of talent but seems to love himself.

Larsson, well he has been average at best this season but how many times has a move to another club revistalised a player. Same could be said with Pederson actually.

Both have talent, just need to get it out of them.

As a norwegian I know quite a lot about Mr. Pedersen. And I think he would fit in well with our former so called “stars”. He is just full of him self, and goes where he gets the highest pay check. For our national team he has been lazy, at best, and doesn’t look interested. It’s a puzzle why he keeps on getting selected (lack of alternatives must be it). And I never forgive the cheating bastard for scoring against us in best Maradona style (And I don’t mean after dribling our whole team, but with his hand) and celebrating the cheating goal in proud manner.

Seb Larson seams like a hard working and honest swede, with a decent right foot. Ciljan gets a lot of praise but I have to admit that the very talented and promising lad seams to have stagnated the last couple of years. He hasn’t developed much after breaking his leg in a horror tacke from a Olympiacos player in an CL game some years ago. He is full of running and commitment, and has a decent pass, but he can’t shoot (never scores) and he is a bit light weight.

Gylfi Sigurðsson would be an absolute EPIC buy, what a player….other than Dorrans and the NUFC squad Sigurðsson’s probably been the most impressive player in that league. Still young 3-4 million i would’ve thought…great buy.

And i dont understand why people are still on about letting Ameobi go? He literrally looks a totally different player to the one we saw in the PL. He bulked up, strong and can clearly finish as we’ve seen throughout this season.

He looks like a different player because he’s NOT in the EPL. He can get away with his horrendous touch and awkward positioning sense in the Championship, but in the Prem we’ll continue to see the calamitous performances that have so marked Shola’s career.

HamarMagpie, some time in the EPL will shake up Skjelbred’s career and probably buck up his ideas, plus I would have faith that Hughton and the training staff will have him bulking up in the gym on a daily basis to cope with the physical rigors of the league.

As for prolific goalscorers, I’m not sure you will really find many. Steven Fletcher may become available, or Kevin Doyle if their clubs are relegated. I still like Jozy Altidore (mostly because I’m American and so is he) but I’ve seen him up close and monitored him, his potential is boundless. At Hull the service he gets is woeful, but he’s proved more than a match for the best defenses in the league and as soon as he learns to make that last telling run or shoot instead of pass, he’ll easily score 15 even in the EPL. The physicality of this league suits him best. If you watch his goal against Spain in the Confed Cup last summer, he just shrugs off Sergio Ramos like a light jacket, so much power and poise in him.

I think either of these would be a good signing. In certain cases players over 26 can be suitable signings. Look at Duff at Fulham. In fact look at the top 4 team that could be created from ex-Newcastle players in the prem.

I think we need another winger for next year as when Routledge was injured we were still sticking a CM out wide. (which doesn’t work).

Firstly, Larsson has been playing a lot as a central midfielder too, not just on the right wing. And would be a good, versatile player to have in the team.

In my opinion we have 5 areas that need improvement. CB, RB, RM, CM and a good experienced Forward.
Our defense has been good this season but I think we can count on Taylor leaving in the summer and Williamson, Colo, Kadar and Hall are not good enough, we need one good CB.

Simpson is not good enough and should only be cover.
Routledge have been given many chances in the Premier League before with Crystal Palace and Tottenham and I honestly do not think he is good enough to be first choise right winger next season.
A creative midfielder is needed, whether or not Barton and Smith stay.
A good new Forward is definetly needed. We should get rid of Ameobi and Best. I understand that people have been impressed by Ameobis performances this season but in my opinion he is not the type of player that creates and scores goals out of nothing, he is not even hard-working! In the Championship he gets away with it because we are the best team in the league. But in Premier League we are fighting for survival and he has shown time and time again that he is not good enough. Get rid I say.

    In:
    O´Hara
    Perch
    Doyle (If Wolves drop)
Roman Eremenko (Great Finnish promising CM, plays for Dynamo Kiev.)
    + a couple more.

    Out:
    Best
    Ameobi
    Butt
    Smith
    Pancrate
    Hall

    Greetings from Norway.

To be honest, i dont like either Larsson or Gamst.

Gamst is slow and very unstabil.
    Larsson is very overrated.

When it comes to Skjelbred, and i watch him alot – he is not that creative. He runs alot though, but NEVER scores.

None of these Scandinavians are classy enough.

I’d snap up Larson as he is proven in the prem, scores some goals and would be great competition for Routledge as they are pretty similar and I would think close in skill level. It will keep them trying to improve and fits in with our buying strategy.
