There are a number of reports in the press, suggesting that Newcastle are interested in 30 year-old Croatian striker Ivan Klasnic, as manager Chris Hughton begins planning for life in the Premier League.
Ivan Klasnic – too old for Newcastle
The Croation striker is currently plying his trade at Bolton Wanderers, and is on a season long loan deal from French club Nantes. Ivan has scored 6 goals in 22 appearances for Bolton this season, so far.
But those reporting the interest mustn’t have heard that Mike Ashley will only bring new players into the club this summer who are 26 years-old or younger, and Chris Hughton is well aware of that.
That seems like a decent transfer policy, because Newcastle are building for the future, and also would hope to get more bargains in the summer.
Newcastle picked up 3 players in January, Mike Williamson, Danny Simpson and Wayne Routledge – all for around £3.5M, and all three are starting in the Newcastle line-up and look like bargain buys.
Hughton knows he will need to add more quality to the squad in the summer, and it seems like full-back, central midfield, winger and striker are areas where some new players will be brought into the Tyneside club.
Kris Boyd of Rangers
As far as strikers go we could do a lot worse than Ranger’s 26 year-old goal machine Kris Boyd who has scored 126 goals in 187 games for the Scotiish club.
We also still like the look of 26 year-old Leeds United striker Jermaine Beckford, but we know that’s not necessarily the thinking of the majority of Newcastle fans.
Jermaine has 27 goals in 42 appearances so far this season for the Yorkshire side.
Jermaine Beckford of Leeds United
Jermaine has 164 first class appearances in his career and has scored 90 goals, and both these strikers come at a good price in the summer – nothing – since both are free agents.
Charlie Austin of Swindon Town
On the younger and less proven side, Newcastle have also been linked with 20 year-old 6’2″ Swindon striker, Charlie Austin, who has 18 goals in 26 appearances for his club this season.
Either of these strikers would be better deal for Newcastle than going for a 30 year-old striker – so we find it hard to believe there’s any truth in the story that Newcastle are interested in Klasnic.
What do you think?
