Middlesbrough failed to do Newcastle just a small favor today, and were easily beaten by WBA 2-0, at the Hawthorns this afternoon.
Roberto Di Matteo – easy 2-0 win for WBA
WBA went ahead just before half time, always a good time to score a goal, when in injury time, Simon Cox scored a good goal.
Cox got the ball on the edge of the penalty area and dummied a couple of Middlesbrough defenders, before blasting the ball home past goalkeeper Brad Jones, and high into the net.
A good goal by Cox but the Middlesbrough defense could have done better to block Cox’s advance.
WBA got a second goal on 55 minutes, but it was woeful defending again from the Middlesbrough defense.
The Teesiders failed to clear the ball from their own penalty area and when it was played back in from the right wing, the ball was headed down and it was Roman Bednar first to the ball to slot it home from 4 yards out – but where were the Middlesbrough defenders?
In other Championship games, Newcastle’s opponents last Tuesday night, Reading, hammered Peterborough 6-0 at the Madejski Stadium.
Leicester City beat Watford 4-1, even though Durham-born Steve Howard was sent off just before half time, Swansea beat Barnsley 3-1, and Blackpool had a great 3-1 win at home to Nottingham Forest.
Cardiff had a good 1-0 win at QPR to stay in 4th position, now just 2 points behind Nottingham Forest.
Scunthorpe had a great 3-0 win at home to Bristol City, thanks to a hat-trick from Gary Hooper, and are now 5 points clear of the drop zone with just 2 games to play.
Newcastle are top of the league on 95 points, 6 points ahead of WBA with a game in hand, and a point on Monday night at Plymouth will give Newcastle the Championship title.
